If you use the smartphone app, you can make an avatar out of any image you like. Tap on the white arrow next to your avatar in the top right of the 'PSN' screen on the app. Select 'Profile', then on the profile screen choose 'edit profile'.

Select 'Add Profile Picture' and you'll have the option to add any image.

Eh, Maybe we'll get a UI redesign at some point a few years in to make themes nicer.

I think they probably scaled theme stuff back a bit because, well, it was a complete nightmare before.

On PS3, even a basic theme was pretty difficult to make.

Its the same thing if you link it with your facebook as well.

I stay as far away as I can from FB Including the import image option in the PS App was a good move.

at least it looks like they are starting to put up videos so you can see 15 sec clips of the dynamic themes in action. some of these are still pretty awful though lol
