PS4's custom themes are hilariously atrocious

I like the PS One Theme. That tone when my PS4 boots up, brings back some memories. Really though. I don't spend enough time on the UI screens to bother too much with the themes.

I knew from the PS3 that most of them were garbage, but didn't expect it for the ps4, it is even worse. It took me so much time trying all of the free themes out, but in the end I came back to the classic theme, which I also don't like.

The ff14 theme is great, but the main wallpaper is too colorful and doesn't fit to my game icons.

We need more dynamic themes. They posted the new Batman pre-order bonus on youtube and it's just static which is pretty lame.

Not only that but there needs to be more avatars, also it's incredibly hard to find these things unless you know what you are looking for... shit they just need to re-do the whole store in general..

I bought the Transitor theme and forgot about it. It automatically installed after the update and I will never change themes again!

I wasted $3 on the one with the moon and some sort of clouds passing by quickly. :/

I think the only one I actually like is the one with the block moving. One of the first free themes.

I like the free Easter LBP theme. It's not dynamic and top part is out of context if you're using it all year but the wooden background of bottom part looks nice and it has nice icons.

I don't find any dynamic theme worth buying though except maybe LBP3 dynamic theme.

If you use the smartphone app, you can make an avatar out of any image you like. Tap on the white arrow next to your avatar in the top right of the 'PSN' screen on the app. Select 'Profile', then on the profile screen choose 'edit profile'.

Select 'Add Profile Picture' and you'll have the option to add any image.

I have spiral, cant wait for the Bloodborne one, is there an easy way to get the FF14 one?

The code to redeem the Bloodborne theme will work for all NA PSN users. You can download it now! Cheers!

You may have to remove the dashes to redeem it on your PC.

I think that image only appears with people who you've shared your real name with (Close Friends).

using God of War, but I turned on my PS3, which has the Killzone 3 Night-ships ride, and Warhawk, and The Force Unleashed 2's, and well, we ain't there yet.

So, curious...

Other than cool art, what do people like in themes?

Quality looping. Either do a video loop of a relatively still scene so there's not a lot of motion, or do a cg scene that blends between many different animations. The ones where they took a single frame of artwork and warp different parts of it to generate an animation loop are horrible. In short, subtlety. Same with the system sounds; on the rare occasions I've tried pay themes on the PS3 they've screwed up the system sounds and they're always too loud. There was one that came with one of the Yakuza games that was gunshots for the menu actions, I just couldn't use it.

Music and custom icons. Just feels nice to refresh your home screen every once in a while.

Music is kind of a big concern for me, just because I think you really need an appropriately chill track otherwise it'll be too jarring. Same with sound effects.

Since our game is 2D, something really dynamic or 3D doesn't really fit the rest of the game, but I'm trying to think of a way to get some subtle motion, etc. in there without using stupid warp effects or breaking the bank.

And, yeah, like with the music, I think it's really important that the sounds not be too jarring. Gunshots sounds like pretty much the worst possible choice for menu sounds, as far as I'm concerned.

It's just like it was on Ps3

The only good ones, are the ones based on video games

or occasionally sport teams

Besides that hit or miss (mainly miss)

yeah, bummer. guess it only works for people who have accepted your real name request

(it should be homer simpson)

I can see why they limited the feature to those who know your "real name" though. Still, being able to share some custom avatar artwork with people is cool.
