Does that make you upset?Anyway, PS5 good Xbox bad. Good job Bo. Always on the front lines.
The point is that the list is totally arbitrary, at least in some places incorrect and it is just another console warring thread trying to make up metrics to turn a disadvantage that PS5 has over XSX into a supposed advantage. There are a multitude of factors going into file sizes (e.g. texture quality, included languages in the install, compression algorithm used, update version, possibly included dlcs in the base install, used plug ins) that vary on a per title basis and are not intrinsically tied to the hardware platform that such a comparison is just bullshit. On a per title basis or a complete database on install sizes, this could serve a purpose (i.e. giving one more point of comparison to decide where to buy a multiplatform game as a multi console owner), but the way it is framed here, as a point of comparison between the two consoles, it really is just a very weak console warrior thread. Not sure Bo's done anything wrong here. Hasn't been antagonizing anyone, and just posted a list. People are welcome to dispute the contents of the list with facts, if they want, which is what I see some people doing.
Are you sure you didn't accidentally gold yourself? Thanks for the gold, stranger!![]()
I don't think anyone is really upset, but thank you kindly for asking.Does that make you upset?
You can also use external USB SSDs with the PS5.When you can have had 3 SSD's hooked up
Theres even a marketing term for it... SmartDelivery™There is a rumor that the gen-aware games, have both version in the package, since they are exactly same size on X1 and S|X...
I find it amusing that people attackBo_Hazem for posting a table, with a source, and then being open to correcting it, while being completely ok with tons of bullshit threads with no proof whatsoever and / or incorrect data that has been proven wrong, but never edited by the OP.

Here are some of them.Who are these "people" you are referring to?
I'm not sure what noted Reddit user u/pmartinez527 was hoping to prove with a sample size of 12 games.
Some series S installs are smaller than Series X.
Anyway, PS5 good Xbox bad. Good job Bo. Always on the front lines.
Not surprise by the results when I realized who made the thread, also as someone pointed out already there’s a lack of detail.
I think before posting the data which makes them PS5 look massively better with instal sizes there should of been so research done. As people have posted the xbox games sizes are wrong and yes the majority are still smaller instal own PS5 they are way overblown on size for xbox. People right to call out something that isn’t right. I hope its done in all threads where its proved wrong. No issue withBo_Hazem posting it but when proved its wrong we move on

Bo_Hazem you are missing Mass Effect LE in your list
Just a quick check on my xbox and Tony Hawl is actually 22GB on Xbox

yeah oneYou can also use external USB SSDs with the PS5.
I don't have many of these on PC but Avengers is 71.58GB on PC and Dirt 5 is 38.43GB on PC so smaller than both consoles. If the point of the thread is to show ps5 compression is better, it doesn't show that. The only thing it shows is ps5 game sizes are smaller. Half these games are smaller on PC than on Xbox.
That does not matter as both are in hardware. So it does not really matter which one is faster on the CPU...
Kraken is 297% faster than ZLIB in decompression, so no. Also it's not exclusive to Sony, they just licensed it so devs could use them for free on PS5/4. Any platform or publisher could licenses them as well, and could be included now with Unreal Engine after Epic Games bought RAD Tools.
...
Am I the only one who still thinks that 22GB for 2 really old games with new graphics is still big?Bo_Hazem you are missing Mass Effect LE in your list

Do you also have Hitman 1&2? Than you might also have installed those games with Hitman 3. I always made the mistake and installed Hitman 1 & Hitman 2 with all addons. And all addons means that both have also all levels of Hitman 1 & 2 installed ...Don't know how to take a screenshot of the XSX dashboard but here is Hitman 3 with everything installed.

I think at least some of the difference is the fact that PS5 just installs English for me where there is a choice. Maybe XSX is just installing everything which is clearly not ideal when SSD space is limited but maybe not indicative of better compression.

Kraken Vs ZLIB: 29% Smaller Game Sizes Losslessly, 297% Faster Decompression on PS5
Kraken VS ZLIB: According to the official graph by RAD Game Tools, Kraken has 29% higher compression ratio over ZLIB (used in PS4 and other platforms), and does it 3-5x faster (doesn't really concern us as gamers, only good for devs). Both Kraken and ZLIB are lossless compressions, meaning data...www.neogaf.com

Yeah I’ve been crying all night.Does that make you upset?
Reporting on the ones I have and that are listed on XSX:
Crash 4 - 22.2 GB
AC:V - 72.1 GB
THPS 1+2 - 22.0 GB
NBA 2K21 Next Gen - 106.6 GB
Only now did I notice that Cold War with everything installed is 185.1 GB, congrats Activision.

That does not matter as both are in hardware. So it does not really matter which one is faster on the CPU.
Also it is always a question what the parameters for the benches are and what kind of data was used. But as it is now special hardware that makes up for this, that does not matter anymore. Only the average compression ratio and hardware-limited speed are the important specs.

well not optimal until you realize that you must only install one of those games to play them all.
Currently it seems that the biggest difference in game size is the fault of the delivery system used by the developer. Some developers just roll out versions that just adds packages to the xbox one version (no redownload required if you use the downloaded game on any of the consoles) or use the packaging of the PC version. We will see the real differences in game size once the old consoles are no longer supported and games are only packed for those two consoles.

Why the heck is NBA 2k21 so big? ... I thought this was a basketball game after all ... must have long levels now and be very rich in variety of assets.
In your dreams maybe.X is native 4k in most of games
oO never heard of this. Didn't know that there is ingame audio data that is still uncompressed ... really don't know if this is less resource intensive, as this can be streaming intensive for the good old HDDs. Also audio decompression is not really very cpu intensive (not even for jaguar cpus) and is an optimal use-case for multi core-systems while most games did not really use all of the cores all the time. Really a strange decision. But with Titanfall it was the old half life 2 engine. Maybe it just wasn't so multi-core focused after all.For NBA 2K21 it's pretty strange, but could be using high quality audio (licensed music)?

Titanfall Dev Explains The Game's 35 GB of Uncompressed Audio
Respawn says Titanfall‘s gargantuan file size is so they can dedicate more system resources to running the game. What would stop Xbox from using the exact same compression algorithms? At this point we need more data as to why they are bigger.
2k21 is a large game. It has open-world stuff now, and lots of high-resolution assets for create a player/team/shoes/etc. It's more than just a basketball game nowadays, somewhat to its detriment. They screwed up the shot meter this year, but that's unrelated to the file size. Just a gripe I always have to vent about.Currently it seems that the biggest difference in game size is the fault of the delivery system used by the developer. You mean Kraken and Oodles?
Yes those can be used on Xbox but the PS5s decompressor is supposedly more powerful. I'm guessing if there's a reason why they are not using it is because the decompressor in the Series console takes longer to decompress those types of formats.
It's all that I can think of to why Microsoft doesn't include Kraken or Oodle Textures. They have reasons for using Zlib and BCpak instead.
Thanks for the gold, stranger!![]()
It was not me but I could not get this out of my head
Do these people also admit on being "OK with tons of bullshit threads with no proof whatsoever and / or incorrect data that has been proven wrong, but never edited by the OP" or did you just make that up? I assume the latter, but feel free to prove me wrong.
Actually Kraken works perfectly with ZLIB decompressor as well. PS5's decompressor is dedicated Kraken decompressor and should work better plus being more than twice as powerful and independent, but XSX should have the exact game sizes as PS5 when Kraken is used and it'll decompress 297% faster than ZLIB according to RAD Tools:
![]()
But it's provided for free for the devs on PS4/5, and ZLIB is the only thing available for free on XSX but devs can use/license Oodle Kraken if they want to. Also now Unreal Engine should have both Oodle Kraken and Oodle Texture packaged with the engine as Epic Games have acquired RAD Tools recently.
Another gold for Bo incoming. He can't keep getting away with it.Next week Bo gonna do a thread on how long the pack in HDMI and Power cords are…

Maybe I'm just understanding the strength of decompressor wrong. I always thought it helped determine the speed of decompression.
Yes it helps a lot with the speed of the decompression process. Kraken is 297% faster than ZLIB on equal grounds, not on PS5 vs XSX. Game sizes are pre-compressed so it should usually have relatively similar sizes on both consoles with minor differences when used on both. I think Capcom is using Kraken for RE8 in both consoles, hence similar sizes.
Moving the goalpost, I see. Watch out, soon the goal post will be outfield.
Oh man, i can't wait to hear your opinion on a DF thread when they give the upper hand to xbox. If you think these are pretty strong accusations, you're in for a ride. If it is against other members, then i can refer you to the latest thread about GP madeby David Jaffe.Just because you think, it doesn't mean others do.
This was not a callout. There's downright downplaying and pretty strong accusations on this thread. Don't be selective with your arguments.
