I just dove in and bought a PS4 today - The Last of Us edition specifically. Tried setting it up, but I keep getting a variety of error codes - anything from Maintenance being performed - to simply being unable to connect to host. So, I pretty much cant play anything on my new system.

Any tips from people what I can do with it in the mean time?

I'm thinking the latter, given the dire financial doldrums of the larger corporate entity. They just can't and probably won't ever be able to properly invest and establish a truly stable network environment to properly handle the influx of new and old users.

They just can't compete on the level of a Microsoft, Google, Apple or hell, Valve at this point.

You know what? That's just not an excuse. Games come out, it goes down. Updates come out, it goes down. Someone sneezes, it goes down.

Being charged for this is getting pretty annoying. Yes, I get it, there's an influx of traffic. Well guess what, we're fucking paying Sony to get their ass in gear and be fucking prepared. They know better than anyone the sort of numbers they're handling so use the cash from subs to prepare better. Embarrassing.

But Microsoft seem to once a month. I don't own an Xbox One but I don't notice a whole lot of complaining about Xbox Live being down? I've never been too big on comparing the two like for like for the sake of it, but maybe we should start doing seeing as they both charge.

It's actually easier/faster to read messages on my PS phone app, rather than the built in PS4 messaging system. Silly really.

It really is...when it doesn't encounter the same bullshit latency issues on sending or receiving. Personally, I'd rather use my phone and not go out of my game.

Eh, the Playstation division is profitable. And from what it looks like, the will/are going to invest into network infrastructure.

He warned, however, that profitability of the game division, which had been combined with network services such as streaming video and music as well as games, would be constrained in the near term as Sony needs to invest in its network infrastructure over the next 12-18 months.

I pay $50 a year now to authorize through PSN (which is free for everybody and prone to frequent errors apparently) so I can connect to a Destiny server. When I can't, I'm pretty disappointed.

Yeah, that kinda sucks. I'd rather hear "Ok guys, shit is overloaded, we'll be doing the best we can, but don't expect to get online anytime soon. Also, we're constantly improving our network infrastructure but real improvements and results will be a matter of months instead of weeks" instead of just nothing.

I installed 2.0 this morning and the PSN worked great. I don't think this is related other than perhaps too many people downloading the update but it's not that big so that shouldn't be an issue.

QFT, the 386 PC they have running their backend cannot handle too many twitter responses.
