Will I ever get to buy Outland? BGE? Wow. If they wait another week, it'll be almost a month since its been down. A month! This won't make me switch over to XBL, not really a multiplayer gamer, but I do enjoy PSN stuff and other DLC from time to time.

If this isn't up for BRINK or L.A. Noir, shits going to get real.

I dont think we need PSN for L.A. Noire unless we are that desirous of DLC stuff.

Not a bad deal. Where did you trade in your stuff? I'm looking to unload my second ps3 once psn is back up.

Does L.A. Noire have some awesome multiplayer or something? I guess if there's day one DLC, right? Serious question, since I haven't been paying attention... I just know a friend of mine said he switched his preorder from PS3 to 360... and that makes no sense to me since I'm not aware of any remarkable online features; so unless it was deemed to be a shitty port on PS3 or 360 had exclusive content, I couldn't see why anyone would trade 1 disc for 3. :|

God I can't wait for PS3 to get cross game chat. Just so people stop asking for it. Such an overrated feature. At least to me.

I only want to talk to people when I'm playing an online game. And at that time I would hope the people on my squad are talking to our squad, not to someone else playing another game not paying attention.

Drop in Drop out Game Invites are more important to me that cross chat.

It will be be the least used feature. When I had my 360 people would send me chat invites, and i could not figure out for the life of me what someone wanted to talk about. So I stopped responding to people unless it was a game invite or assistance to help with a co op game.

Most of my friends are all over 35 and we talk at the bar, at work, at parties. But we don't just call each other up to chat so I don't see us doing it in game.

It's like party chat. Has some benefits, but when i joined a left 4 dead game i thought I was being ignored, turned out the other members were in a party chat and ignoring the in game team chat. Horrible.

Right on, brother.

1.Is the social interaction laughable just because there is no cross game chat?

2.Which features have been removed all the time (assuming your talking about software, since hardware stuff doesnt affect you if you already own a PS3).

3.Which FU attitude are you referring to? And what do you mean by "knowingly uprotected my account info"?

cross game chat is the pinnacle of social interaction, but I guess you wouldn't know that if you have to ask..
example:
player1 playing dead space: "lol I am playing dead space!!"
player2 playing ctf in call of duty 2: "that is so cool! I am playing ctf in cod2 as we speak!"
player1 playing dead space: "wow, is this not social interaction?"
player2 playing ctf in call of duty 2: "It is the pinnacle!"

2. have you ever heard of..
OTHER OS??????
the ability to run linux on around 200MB of ram with no access to the RSX??
Doesn't ring a bell?

Also SACD* and PS2 emulation* were removed :-( !!!!

3. Well they did say "FU we don't care that you can't play any games and we won't do anything about it, we already have your money suckers!"
Plus, they knew all the info was unprotected, hence "knowingly unprotected"

* this is used rather often by (but not limited to) lesser educated PS-haters. Btw even geohot thought SACD and PS2 were removed in a software update :-D

Yes, it has case files from different preorders. I seriously doubt they are on the disc. I don't know for sure though.

That's true, but as long as it comes up before you finish the game, you should be okay, right?

I think the PS3 version of RDR had exclusive content of some sort, but that was on the disc and wasn't preorder specific.

Hi, I am a short-sighted person who's terrible with money. I traded in an expensive piece of electronic equipment for far less than its true value because a free online service went down for a couple of weeks. I then re-bought a similar piece of equipment for a much higher price and all of the previous accessories I had for the other piece of equipment. No lasting damage was done to my person, but I'm terribly impatient and decided to bomb my bank account.

But they're sending such a strong message to *insert game company*

i kind of wish i had gotten MK for 360 over ps3 at this point :/

well not even a week into the outage one guy in my speech class picked up a 360 and traded in all his ps3 games at gamestop to pick up some 360 games

I'm sure that cross game chat can be a nice feature indeed (although personally i dont really need it that much because when i want to talk to people while playing, i usually want to be playing the same game as those i talk to), but is cross game chat the only feature that distinguish PS3's social stuff from being great or laughable?

Nope, i have never heard of OtherOS, please tell me more hehe :P :) Seriously though, the reason for why i asked is because he said that features are being removed all the time, and since he talked about patches etc. i assumed he was talking about stuff being removed through the firmware updates. OtherOS is one thing, although an important feature to many and pity that it was removed, it is still one thing.

People who already had/have a PS3 with PS2 backward compability still has that feature, the same with SACD (didnt know that was removed) =)

Where did they say anything remotely like that? Unless your being sarcastic?

They also didnt say that his info were unprotected. They said that names and adress etc. were not encrypted, but that does not mean the same as uprotected. If he ment not encrypted, then i know what he mean. Is it common to encrypt this type of info by the way?

LOL

Anyone remember Family Guy when peter went to a feminist camp and came back like acting like a woman? He was in the bathtub and called up quagmire, quagmire was confused, asked why peter called and what he wanted, what the point of the phone call was. Peter says.. "just wanted to talk", quagmire still confused.... hangs up...

I'm quagmire when it comes to cross chat.

People selling their systems and games over not having online? That makes me feel slightly less dumb for wanting ta dump my PS3 last fall due to only having had 6-7 games for it after 3 years of owning it!

There hasn't been any massive PS3 trade rush though. Most people are dealing with it maturely.

I've given thought to it. If PSN is not up by May 23rd or 24th I'll bite the bullet, or if there's a 360 stick sale. I only play online with consoles, so broken online= broken console. I just realize that it's $450-$500 to get what I want, and that's a good chunk of cash. I'd be less patient if I wasn't taking a trip up to Chicago to see friends in about 10 days.

This is why I think the PS3 survives this. If this has been 2 years ago, would have been a different story, but people have enough invested in their consoles now, that switching would be costly. People will punish Sony in the future for this if they choose to do so, not the present. Sony may not want to rush the PS4 though if they can help it.

I do think Sony will be unable to charge for PSN next gen without losing a bunch of folks after this. 2 years won't be long enough to regain trust, and if they're charging- people will flock to XBL- because it works. So that might be a win for consumers in the end.

Never heard of Skype? I know of quite a few PS3 and even Xbox 360 gamers who use Skype instead of the built-in VOIP of the consoles because the quality is so much better.

My best friend and only friend who enjoys games as much as I do lives in another province. We get a lot of our talking done over PSN/360/Skype. Yes, I wouldn't want to be talking with someone through my first play through of single player story campaign(atleast good ones). Sometimes I want to play some blackops online, or he's on his second play through of killzone 3 while we still want to remain chatting.

Agreed. It's also more efficient.

I liken it to a console browser or something like google TV. Doesn't matter how good it is if you have a laptop right next to you.

The main thing XBL has over PSN is the built-in invite system.

Going to the trouble (and loss of money) to trade the console and everything on it because of a service that will be back up feels a bit insane to me.
I even understand the guy who was not being happy with the service in the first place and to whom this was the last straw, but "I really like my PS3, but I need to play online THIS WEEK and therefore must sell it and everything on it" is, again, a bit insane.

My brother and I use ps3 video chat during the holidays. He is in the army in Texas and I'm in New York.

Our families love it.. We still wouldn't do it in game.

I'm not dissing those that find value in cross chat, I just think its low on the priority list of necessary features. Especially when people say the PSN sucks due to lack of it. Really? all the woes and console bickering will go away when ps3 gets cross chat?

Like everything else once ps3 gets it no one will care for it. Most people just use it as an argument point to say why xbl is better than psn. Once p3 gets it most people will forget about it and some will just find something else to argue about.

It's a nice and welcomed feature. Just overratted if you ask me.

Not sure if this is known info., but bitmob posted an article saying that Sony's Apache servers were UP TO DATE despite that guy claiming their servers were outdated

http://bitmob.com/articles/detective-work-reveals-psn-servers-up-to-date

As it turns out, it is fairly simple to use Google's webcache to show what version of Apache the PSN servers were using back in March. According to a page request archived by Google on March 23, 2011, at that time Sony was running version 2.2.17 of the software. You can see from Apache's website that 2.2.17 is the latest stable version of the webserver available even today. This is a direct repudiation of the claims being made that Sony's webservers were out of date by as much as five years.

Poster deathindustrial also goes on to point out the folly in using "security expert" Dr. Stafford's testimony before Congress as a source for the claims that the servers were outdated and that Sony knew about it. In the written statement which accompanied his testimony, Stafford clearly states:

I have no information about what protections they had in place, although some news reports indicate that Sony was running software that was badly out of date and had been warned about that risk.

So he had no first-hand knowledge of the state of Sony's servers or Sony's knowledge about possible exploits, and he was literally repeating claims that he read in the media, which might have stemmed from IRC chat logs that were being passed around back in February. He didn't even do the very basic detective work it would've taken to completely repudiates the claims.

It's sad to say, but many are so eager to see Sony's eye blackened that they are willing to believe any rumor that puts the PlayStation in a negative light. We are in a backwards world where everything Sony says is assumed to be a lie or conspiracy, and anonymous IRC chat logs of dubious origins have miraculously become the most trusted news source in the industry. Here we have a concrete example of why its important to actually verify your source before repeating something as fact.

Cross-game chat itself isn't a feature I use so much as just the ability to chat with people outside of the in-game chat while playing the same game. It's a lot easier than having to mute everyone every time you get into a match.

We had already noted several times that "Dr. Stafford" didn't actually say any of those things, instead he said that someone news sites had claimed it, with no evidence what so ever except for (lol) irc logs.

According to another guy on Beyond3D, he says that this was only regarding 1 PSN server, but there are still 45 left.

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1549294&postcount=501

I have no idea how this works though, if there are 45 different servers that all needs to be updated with Apache or if it is enough to update only 1 server (while the other servers are linked to that server).

Why would all 45 PSN servers even need Apache?

Unless you're like a heavy Call Of Duty/Battlefield/etc player, trading in the PS3 sounds ridiculous to me. I understand that you can play online on XBOX 360 right now, but you can't play inFamous 2 or Uncharted 3 on it can you? Think of all the money you'd lose that's invested into PSN content too.

Just sounds like a bizarre thing to do. At least to me. If it was down another month I'd maybe start to understand.

I have no idea how PSN is set up, so i'm wondering about it too :) There were also some talk about outdated Linux i think. But again, this is just speculation, no confirmation or proof on it as far as i know.
