PsVR worth it ?

A local store has the bundle with the camera and 2 move controllers for $350 and I'm somewhat tempted but not sure if it's worth it.

I've been interested in "real" VR for a while.I enjoyed using my Gear VR but I dropped it pretty quickly because my S6 would overheat after literally 5 minutes of use and I've been interested to try out a better and more complex VR experience.

But I'm just not sure if it's worth it. There just doesn't seem to be that many games and a lot of them look like minigames I'd try for an hour and then never again. What seems to be the killer App is RE7 but it's not really for me (I don't like horror games and I'd probably die of a heart attack after 30 minutes of this).
It also seems like a device that will be useful for like 2 years tops since it's not compatible with PC and the next PlayStation is probably gonna use a new headset (if at all).

So what would you PS VR owners say? Has it been worth it so far ?.

I have a Pro if that makes any difference.

First of all have you tried or experiencied any of the Big VR headsets before to see if you are prone to locomotion sickness if not, I would say try it before you buy it. Sony has demo stations this Holiday again.

As for is it worth it. For me it definitely was, personally I find it more attractive than normal gaming because every experience in VR is different all the games I have purchased (40 so far) have provided me with hours of entertainment all of which have differently effected me in a positive way.

As for games: PSVR has a bunch, so there might be something that catches your eyes. Here is the list:

If you have any other doubts I definitely recommend going to the PSVR OT we answer anything there.

It's great at first, then you realize its shortcomings and then it's an expensive dust collector you pull out every couple of minths for a day or so. That was my experience. After the first week or so it got boring/annoying very fast.

Disclaimer: I don't have any motion sickness issues.

Pro MAKES a difference, but also having 2 moves.

It's a fantastic HW tool, the games are there (not only horror games so don't worry), are quite different, there are "short" experiences, and also "long" games. Adventure, puzzle, action, platform... there is everything.

That said... to me is actually for passionates gamer right now. I really love my PSVR, every time i grab it and use it again it blows my mind how good already is the experience in VR, even with the limits of the actual generation... so don't worry about the quality.

But I have to repeat, it's an expensive tool, and I would suggest it to buy only to a passionate gamer...

Disclaimer: it's something completely different and better (a lot, really) than anything else from smartphone VR... so expect something way better and entertaining.

Motion sickness: depends, usually is a matter of play the new game in short session to get used to it if it's heavy free motion... but with games where you actually don't really moves from your position, there is no problem at all.

It's definitely something different. A novelty. I can appreciate how for many people, they aren't going to "jack in and never return to gaming like they had before." That being said, there's more than a handful of good to very good, even great games on the system. You can't really go in expecting a full set of AAA level games yet, and that's a deal breaker for some - but what it does do, is provide just enough games and experiences which are fun, unique, balanced, affordable.
Personally, I love it - I have a Vive and PSVR, I'm also developing. It's still early days, but very invigorating.

Exactly the same experience. Used a lot at the beginning and then after a few weeks it was just lying around. At some point, the poor resolution of the glasses and bad graphics of the games will annoy you.

Im a massive VR fan but....

The tech limitations are a HUGE obstacle.
Between getting tangled in wires, trying to drink your brew with it on, getting motions sick (I dont suffer from motion sickness in locomotive games but strangley felt sick playing a couple of stationary games), and the gfx simply not being great....well, its makes things tough to enjoy for too long.

Add to that the software isnt there yet and yeah, its got its issues.

On the posiktive, I played through RE7 in VR and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. Astonishing how real it feels.
Dirt Rally VR, again, with a wheel its beyond compare.
VR Porn is also fun :)

Batman, London Heist, Playroom VR, all great short experiences. Even Job Simulator is good for a laugh.

And then its starts to become more hassle than its worth.

Im a fairly Hardcore gamer and so im glad ive got it but if you dont have the disposable income then its tough to recommend due to the very AAA games out for it.

I will be honest, the kit itself is brilliant and its cheap (in comparison to others on the market) but there are tiny things that stop it being indispensable.

The fact to fully enjoy it you NEED a pro is a big one. Anyone with the original PS4 will still get a good bit of kit, but the Pro makes it a lot better.

Also, the wires! Man the wires. So much to plug in and move around. Its a small point but one that in the end drove me a bit nuts.

The actual hardware/software for the thing is superb, please don't let me sway you from the purchase. But you need a pro (if you have one, brilliant) and be prepared for wires, lots of wires...

This was my prediction and ultimately why I bowed out. I'm an early adopter for just about everything, but I couldn't get myself fired up for this thing knowing I'd only use it every few weeks/months after the novelty wore off. I'd probably jump in at, say, $199 which means I'll probably never bother until/unless I can find a like-new/used one that cheap at some point. Incidentally, I think VR needs to hit that price point in order to have any kind of mainstream success. It's just too expensive when u factor in the cost of the console (let alone a game-capable PC).

.

I'm usually lurking on these threads as I don't have a PS4 but the wires situation for these pieces of kit bother me.

It's bad enough that I have a charging cable for the XB and Switch lying around the front of my unit!

How long before wireless units can stream what they need in VR terms?

VR is amazing and PSVR is worth it. I have PSVR and Occulus and while the occulus is better and PC VR is better with the extra horsepower, PSVR is still much better than no VR.

I just don't think VR is 'there' yet. A few generations from now, it will be amazing, but to me PSVR is a good novelty gadget to show people who are curious, but it's just not the transformative experience VR will (hopefully) one day become.

But unless enough people get on board now, we'll never get there.

It's a tough call. Is it worth it? That's subjective. But you can think of as sending a signal that consumers want this explored further.

Thanks for the comments.

I think I'll wait for now. Sounds like it's still not on the level that I hoped for and while I'm sure that it's a great novelty item I think those $350 could he spent on something I'll end up using more .

Mabye next gen

I owned mine for about 3 months before selling it, at that time I was still using a vanilla Ps4 which was pretty muddy visually and the library, while good from the get-go led by stuff like Batman Arkham and RE7, didn't( for me) quite justify the investment. So I actually sold mine at a profit and got back on the sidelines. Fast forward to today, and I now own a Ps4 Pro( as of last week, got a GREAT deal on one) and the library has expanded with many of the launch titles now much cheaper, Farpoint is out, Doom and Skyrim around the corner and black friday in 3 weeks. So if I can get a good deal on one( say $300 or less) I'll probably hop back on. It seems like Sony is more serious about pushing it.

Skyrim VR releases in two weeks OP, some others will probably be reluctant to call it a system seller, but I'm not one of them.

It's a big deal to be getting a game of that size in VR, and couple that with RE7 and you've got some real good arguments for owning a system now still in its first year. I realise that RE7 isn't for you though, which does make the call a bit closer.

The other experiences are a bit shorter as you point out, and that even extends to Doom VR which is also just a month away. But they are solid experiences to go along with the big two, and they are really adding up at this point, with even more to follow. So yeah, I would say that I'm confident enough in the value of the system now to recommend it just personally.

I've tried VR before and they just put out some PSVR kiosks at Best Buy and I tried it some more.

I don't think I'm ready for it yet because it still feels like it's infancy.

Sign me up for the next gen or next-next gen PSVR where 8K video is being used for it.

If you're interested in vr and don't have a pc setup to do the job it's not a terrible investment. but with oculus and touch at a perma discount it's kind of a bad value proposition right now... you're going on good faith there'll be some really solid exclusives in the ps4's twilight years

Genuinely have no idea. I would hope that it is what is being worked on next because for me, as soon as that headset is wireless, it opens it up to be used far more effectively.

Into context, when I set up the VR the first time (not on a Pro, I bought one after I first tried VR), there are two plugs to plug in. A connection to the USB and of course the camera around the back of the PS4 as well. (Sorry about the hazy details, it was beginning of the year and haven't got it back out properly for at least six months).

It plus into a middle box that then connects to the headset. So there are two big cables running down your back from the headset. Unfortunately because it doesn't have built in audio, you also have headphones floating around your neck/head (Though I do believe a revised headset is coming with integrated sound) and it can all get a bit much...

Like I say, the kit itself and the end result is genuinely brilliant. But the wireless headset is when I will really take it all seriously... put on a helmet and you're away... can't wait!

That’s hard question to answer really. It depends..

VR’s worth on Playstation will grow yearly in terms of actual number of games supported.

The real question is when will they update the headset if ever? And is the current price low enough for you to take that risk now?

Depends how you play video games OP.

I tend to relax on the couch and have a blast for a few hours now and then or play on the switch in bed. Maybe occasionally I will fit in a decent 4 to 6 hour session, although I will generally do other things i.e. keep an eye on football scores etc.

VR would just be utterly pointless for me.

I think its great for the first hour or so but they really need to release some serious attractive games to get your money's worth.

At the minute it feels like only Demo's are being released and they charge you for the taster!

Lets hope 2018 will be better for choice of games on the PSVR......

In the same boat as the OP.

I had one on pre-order way back when but baulked at the last minute.

I’m actually thinking of letting Wifey buy me one for Xmas but am worried that my bog standard PS4 is going to spoil the experience somewhat.

I have RE7 on the shelf, still in the shrink wrap and ready to go.

Does the Pro really make that much of a difference?

I love my VR.

At first I was scptical because you really go from shiny Uncharted visuals back to Playstation 2, early Playstation 3 graphics. But really, once the VR is on your head you will be inside a new reality and you won't have any real life objects in the way that will let you compare the visuals.

The only downside is that there are not much good games. Farpoint is amazing and RE7 is really badass. but besides those, the rest of the games right now are more like: "Look you can do this in VR" and: "Rollercoaster! But not really though."

To ease one of your concerns, OP, I'm willing to bet that PS5 supports the current PSVR. It's likely we will get a PSVR2 eventually, too, but I'd be very, very surprised if they didn't make the first one work as well.

Also, as a general comment, I'm expecting a revived interest in VR when Ready Player One hits. I've read the book, and despite some general issues with it, loved it... and with Steven Spielberg and a huge budget behind it, I expect it to be a pretty massive hit. It's about VR, and it might just be the thing that breaks the dam wide open.

RE7 15h
Farpoint 8h
Skyrim VR 20h (main)
Robinson the Journey 8h
RIGS (depends, it's like a sport game, so 1 to infinite h)
The Solus Project 15h

This is a list of games that last longer than a couple of hours... And usually short game are replayable like: Rush of Blood, SuperHot VR, Arizona Sunshine and many others. You can finish them playing for 3-4h straight, but the fun is to replay them... (and the price is never 69€ they are much cheaper, from 39€ to 29€ day-one, and already discounted months by months...)

All these are everything but "Demo" or "little experiences"... why people are still convinced that VR is mostly about "short experience?" Is that really the message that people get from the advertising?

Um, perhaps it’s because you barely managed to scrape together five/six games that last more than an hour or two, .... maybe?

I’m interested in the thing but in no way do I believe it has a comprehensive, fleshed out library of fully fledged single player games.

I was never able to stop mine from drifting all over the place, and I didn't have a Pro at the time.. it went back.

And yeah man.. the wires. There needs to be a wireless solution for all the VR headset communication.

Pretty much gonna echo others.

It's incredible at first. Then you realize pretty much all the games are overpriced short tech demos. Oh, and some games will probably make you nauseous.

I sold it after a few weeks.

It depends.

I love mine, play it around 12 hours a week and just don't play flat games anymore. Farpoint co-op with the Aim controller is just so awesome, the idea of having to play a flat screen FPS anymore, what's the point.

But ... we don't all experience media, and particularly VR media the same—one man's greatest ever experience is another man's novelty—so ideally you need to understand which camp you lie in.

VR is a faf to set-up, so do you have a dedicated space? If not is the place you intend to set it up good for PSVR, because, PSVR has the weakest tracking of the three tethered headsets and requires some effort to get a good reliable setup.

Also, VR comes with trade-offs. You give up some fidelity for presence and a wide FOV stereoscopic display. Now personally I'd trade that any day, and don't understand all this carping about low res, but again we are all difference.

For the moment VR is for those passionate about VR who have the patience to create a good setup and who are tolerant of its shortcomings.

Finally: last weekend, replaying a Farpoint story mission, I mis-judged a Brute charge and got pinned against a rock while it flailed at me: it was so utterly fucking terrifying and visceral that I "screamed uncontrollably like I was being murdered" (my wife's wording): it was an amazing experience :-D that you can only get in VR. Now if that doesn't sell it to you...

I think it's more worth it if you have a bunch of people over to share it with. There's good party games that use the VR & TV screen together and those are the most fun. The first few days of WOW factor are great, but the honeymoon phase ends fast. It isn't something meant to be used for extended periods of time. I find more than a couple hours leaves you feeling physically exhausted even if it doesn't make you motion sick. All that taken into account, it is too neat to not play with for a while.

It's really weird how people keep pushing VR as the end be all then, if you can't even use it for extended sessions.

is the new model available now in NA?

Yes, with the Skyrim bundle.

Depends on the person actually...I once left my girlfriend play job simulator all day until she passed all the levels and trophies and she didn't get motion sickness or tired. When she took the VR headset off she had rubber skid marks on her forehead lol.

No. It's fun, but find someone who has it and play some games that way. Not worth the amount of a brand new system.
