Ratchet and Clank Community Thread: Rip Ya a New One

I'm guessing we'll see some Pokitaru gameplay since it was already shown behind closed doors to some press.

Anyone think we'll get Ratchet and Clank PS4 stuff from PGW?
I sure hope so. Hopefully another re imagined area from the original. I was already surprised by how they expanded Gaspar back at E3, and replaying the first game I'm already thinking about how else they'd change up or expand on old planets.

Speaking of which, I beat Captain Qwark and got the final spaceship, so I'm about 3/4 complete. Hopefully I remember how to do the exploit that gets me a shit ton of bolts for the RYNO. It's crazy to think how much more bolts you get in later games on the first playthrough compared to this. 150,000 feels almost like an impossibility.

Ooh, cool OT. Ratchet is one of my favorite series. Just finished platinum-ing FFA the other day - the 'Ironmadman' trophy was really grindy and obnoxious to get. :/ Also, I generally dislike the "remaster/HD port" trend, but I would love to see Tools of Destruction and Q4B with trophies on the PS4 someday.

Insomniac needs to realise a lot of their audience have grown up over 15 years. The difficulty level in the PS3 ratchet games were a complete joke. ACIT had a 'hard' mode but I still only ending up dying maybe 3 times at most in the entire game to non-platforming elements.

That's my hope for the new Ratchet, an actual hard mode considering I'm into my 20s now and now play games like dark souls, dota and other things which aren't designed for a young audience like Ratchet is. I love the series and will of course be playing the next, I just hope they realise this.

Drag them.

I would love a Ratchet game with an actual hard difficulty. A mode that's, like, super hard even when you have all the armor and weapons maxed out, etc. I have no idea how they would balance that though aside from making the enemies bullet sponges (I'm having nightmarish flashbacks to Resistance 2 co-op already) and doing one hit kills and the like. That's probably why they haven't done it. :p

On a funny note I remember playing TOD for the first time and popping the disco ball and nuking down the final boss in record time. Never touched that gadget again in my replay

TOD has abysmal weapon balance imo. The liquid gold rocket launcher does insane damage while only partially upgraded whilst the regular blaster is a complete joke even with full upgrades.

But the claws and the whip are so damn fun to use, especially when you combine them with long jumps, high jumps and weapon switching

Personally I agree that ACiT's combat is less than stellar. My problem is the lack of Clank (and extended mobility options). The boots are good for platforming but not really applicable for combat the same way. That said, I think ACiT may have the best wrench ever, no joke. Wrench throwing is just really good because Ratchet doesn't get stuck doing the throw animation (I don't know if this was a bug since IIRC they reverted it back in ItN). I ended up using my wrench about 60% on my first playthrough of ACiT because of how good it was.

I actually wanted to attempt a wrench only run before realizing it'd mostly be impossible because of Nefarious' flying portions

Put out the entire series on PS4!

Love this series so much and is one of the few series I could play with my nephew watching.

Oh yeah that, I think you're talking about the one where you enter a hoverboard race when you're in the hologuise. Dang I can't wait to see how the redo the hologuise sections... If they do. Did people like those sections? I remember hating them as a kid but I love them now.

I'd hope they'd make the AI tougher to fight. I wouldn't want them to just rely on altering damage output and health. ItN did it better than CiT since it made the enemy's attacks faster (in regards to ranged attacks at least)

Yeah ToD definitely has the worst weapon balance by far throughout all the games. I need to play that game again already but I remember it being real bad in that aspect.

Not limiting the player's moveset would be a step in the right direction

Tougher A.I. would be the way to go. If not that (which would be intensive), then have the player take more damage. Upping enemy health would be lame considering the only real effect of upgrading weapons in this series has been higher damage per second. It's partly of the reason why I want to see more destruction as the result of weapon use in whatever comes after R&C 2016 — it's kind of lame to unlock weapons built up as being insanely devastating, only to find their own use is it kill enemies faster. I want to destroy who buildings in a single shot of the R.Y.N.O.

All I know is there had better be the return of Giant Clank sections in the new game. Imagine how nuts that could be now with destructible objects and physics.

More destructible environments seems like almost a no-brainer thing to add to the series now that you mention it. I don't know exactly how it would be implemented but i'm sure there's a way to pull it off well.

I always chuckle when I see the "press the big red shiny button?" prompt during that section. They just know you want to. Some good stuff from the PGW trailer, really was glad to see the jet fighter segment from Pokitaru making a return. Looked just like how you would want it.

Anyway, I'm now doing the bolt glitch in the original R&C in order to get the RYNO. Plugged in my arcade stick and placed the dualshock's grip on top of the fire button and now all I have to do is wait a few hours to build up the necessary funds.

God, I forgot how long it takes to get all that money with this method.

I really liked the shot of the warship blowing up since it implies hat a certain section I really liked from the original will be reimagined... (Well of course it would but it's nice to have more confirmation)

Ah I didn't recognize that scene in the trailer, good stuff.

+1 on the Pokitaru jet fight. And yes, that bolt glitch is so helpful! Bolts are hard to come by in the original!

Wat. I've never even heard of that exploit. I thought you were talking about the hologuise one.
I am. Use the hologuise to enter Blackwater Hoverboard race, go under the platform with a huge stack of crates, then use the Taunter to break the crates overhead and suck in all the bolts.

Anyway, I've hit just under 200K so I'll call that quits for now, just so I can finish the game tonight and go on to challenge mode.

Huh, I only knew of the Decoy Glove method

Oh and that video reminds me of how awesome the music was in the original.

Interesting. That's new to me.

Anyway, finished first playthrough of Ratchet & Clank. Nice trip back down memory lane, and I got all the gold bolts too (most of which I still remembered where they were). Next playthrough will be focused on getting all skill points and gold weapons.

I gotta say, I never gave it much thought in all the years I have played this series, but this time I paid more attention to the game's music and it really has nice style to it. Like it's sci fi with a sort of "funky" slant to it which makes for really good background music. This'll be something I plan to pay attention to as I go back through the remaining games and pay more attention to the audio, because it's some quality stuff.

Also, it kinda shows just how much allowing weapons to level up from Going Commando onward really helped the series because I only really used less than half of all 15 weapons in this game, just focusing on the ones I found to be effective in most situations. With weapon leveling it guaranteed each item would get some use out of it from me before it maxes out and I go back to the normal stuff. But in this game, the Blaster, Pyrociter, Bomb Glove, and Devastator were the only weapons I kept on my weapon wheel the whole way through.

The big takeaway at the end of this of course is I am now fully refreshed on every level and moment of this game and at this point has made me as excited as can be for the PS4 game next year. I can't stop my mind from imagining what they'll do for recreating old scenarios, especially after seeing today's new trailer.

Good game. Aged, but still worth going back to just to see where it all began and compare it to now. Even if Ratchet's a bit of a jerkass in this one.

Played a bit of the Tools of Destruction demo yesterday, it was pretty fun.
Can you change the language in the full game, or do you need to change the PS3 language? The Dutch voice acting was surprisingly good, but I'd prefer to play it in English.

You need to change the system language to English if you want to play the game in English.

The music from the first 3 games is just amazing in general. It's extremely underappreciated IMO. There are just tons of good tracks I can take from all of those games.

Yep, completely agreed. Even for PSBR, the only stage themes they picked for Ratchet and Clank were from the PS2 games (with, imo, the Resistance vs. Ratchet and Clank mashup probably being one of the best tracks in the game)

Personally, I like UYA's soundtrack the most of the original trilogy

Starship Phoenix
Kerwan - Metropolis
Courtney Gears song and the vocal-less version

Finished my second runthrough of Ratchet & Clank last night, all gold weapons and skill points acquired. Everything to do in that game is done.

Now it's time for Going Commando. The game that made me fall in love with this series in the first place.

Son, you're in for a treat.

Going Commando has a special place in my heart. It was the first Ratchet and Clank game I bought, and I spent so much time with it back then. It really set the formula for all the games that came after it, and it was a pleasure to platinum it in the HD Collection.

Pretty amazing how the game looks a lot like the movie. I hope we get to see more projects like this in the future.

An update on my journey back through the Ratchet & Clank series, finished my first run through of Going Commando. Still fucking fantastic, and for it having only come out a year after the first, the leap in quality and scope is palpable despite being structurally and mechanically still the same (unlike something like Jak 1 to 2). Stuff I really enjoy like the arena fights, weapon leveling, and mods making their appearance here is all good.

And because this was my very first R&C game I always have a huge soft spot for the Bogon Galaxy out of all the major settings in this series. The overall aesthetic governed by Megacorp's influence is a great contrast to Gadgetron's influence in Solana. Plus they're just downright insane, if their marketing, messaging, and corporate policies are anything to go by (fucking COMPUTERS charging you for info. The audacity, man). It's all so stupid in the best ways.

The one thing I realized I missed from my first playthrough and have to wait for another opportunity in challenge mode is the Box Breaker, but otherwise I got every not-stupidly-expensive weapon bought & upgraded along with all Platinum Bolts. Now to do a couple more playthroughs getting all the Mega weapons, skill points, complete the impossible challenge and what all before moving on to UYA.

God I fucking love this game.

I played through the original game on PS2 a year or two ago. I got about 2/3rds through the game but never went back. The setting wasn't as vibrant as I like. I have the other two games for PS2 and the two main PS3 games but I haven't touched them yet.

I really want to get through the original on vita then play 2&3 for the first time on PS3 but the first game is too frustrating in places.

Replay them on PS3 if you can. The environments look fantastic, and I actually found the first to have the best looking settings after playing them recently.

That's funny that people complain about the first game being too hard. I don't remember it being hard at all. Especially in relation to the two sequels I thought it was the easiest one to get into. Deadlocked on the other hand was pretty damn hard at times.

I think this is the first time I've heard someone say the sequels are harder than the original.

I also think the other three PS2 games are harder than the original. It may have something to do with me always using weapons I hadn't leveled up yet and not what was ideal for the situation though.

I guess I can see the case that can be made for it.

The general clunkiness and checkpoints probably make R&C 1 come off as the hardest to me (and I assume that's the reason why for most people). The original would be easy as heck if the control options and Ratchet's movement were as ace as they were in GC and UYA. The sequels definitely have combat sections that are much more intense and faster than those that existed in the original, but Ratchet's controls in those games are easy for me to utilize well enough so that I could breeze by most of those challenges without much of an issue, and that's playing without armor.

So basically, Clunk is the real main villain of R&C 1,
