Heh, re: the Harmo Knight talk, I too have suffered at the hands of a deleted save after I finished it. But I have to take full responsibility for that myself :p

I'm totally with Martin on the WiiU. Like... everything he said about it.

Even if you factor in mainstream tastes, it's still a wasteland. And yeah, if I'm shelling out hundreds of dollars for new hardware, I want there to be more than 1 game available at launch. What happens after you finish the presumably 6-hour-long NSMBU? You've got another Nintendo-branded doorstop until games actually come out a year later.

...though, that said... I did preorder the deluxe bundle. But I know it's a bad idea!

Anyway, another great episode.

If a person bought a Vita and are even slightly hesitant about a Wii U, they blow my mind.

The thing is the Vita launched with like 26 games day 1 with all genres covered whereas the Wii U is launching with 9 games in total 5 of those are ports and not hitting all the genres.

The outlook for the Vita was promising...was!

For anyone with any sense of self respect the Vita launched with zero games.
(=´∀`)人(´∀`=)

Well, I guess you all feel like I did when the Vita launched then. To me ports are just nicer than the normal launch wankery. I haven't played any of these ports so those kinds of options are nice.

So ZombiU has been getting some of the best press and impressions of all the launch games from people who have played it, but it's just dismissed because Ubisoft is making it? Ok...

Haven't listened to the episode yet, but I simply can't accept putting NSMBWii and NSMBWiiU (it looks very promising, especially with the rush mode) in the same tier as NSMB and NSMB2. It is like someone telling me Mario sucks because Super Mario Land. WiiU's art design is a big step up from the previous ones (the most lively 2D Mario yet) and the music looks like it will be more differentiate than NSMB2 was. I think that covers the pessimism about the NSMB series's most blaring problem: its lazy aesthetics. I guess it is simply a matter in not caring about 2D Mario (or level design, for that matter?).

Wait for reviews. There's not quite as much potential of it being completely crap due to a gimmick not working like you thought it would, but it doesn't look all that exciting, either.

Didn't the press call Red Steel the next Golden Eye when the Wii was launching?

At the very least, I remember people talking it up.

NSMBWii > NSMB so it follows that something something something. Seriously though, they don't even feel like the same "series" in some ways.

Red Steel was a lot of neat ideas that weren't executed well at the time and were done better later. ZombiU looks very similar in that respect and I know I don't want to get burned again.

Yup. It got hyped up quite a bit, not unlike ZombiU. It's the sort of game I can't imagine anybody caring about if it wasn't a launch title. Also, game press hypes lots of duds up. It doesn't really amount to much anymore *stares at Famitsu for a good long while*.

My personal issue with NSMB is the same issue I have with most FPS' nowadays; it feels like I'm playing the same game again and again. I probably wouldn't be as bitter if the series wasn't called NEW Super Mario Brothers.

That being said, the Wii U version looks pretty cool even if the music still sucks big time compared to the 3D Mario games, sadly.

Hmm I don't quite agree that Zombi U will turn out a trainwreck quality-wise considering it has some serious talent behind it (handles mainline Rayman titles including Origins and now Legends, did BG&E). It'll probably sell and be received well because it's a launch title and it looks pretty, that is if it gets any advertising.

Considering it has been over 3 years since this series debut, it is probably time to stop paying too much attention to the title (since it is the 2, Wii, or WiiU at the end which matters). Does it need over 5 entries before you stop feeling bitter about it, or is that privilege only something like FINAL Fantasy holds?

It's a minor jab, not my whole point. =)

And yes, Final Fantasy is also annoying, but after 20 + years I've come to terms with the fact that that's not changing. It's a brand name at this point. Kind of like what Shin Megami Tensei has become. It helps that each game plays extremely different from one another too (for better or worse), but that's neither here nor there.

My point is that I don't see why Nintendo seems content with running in place with their 2D series when they're more than capable of doing more. I miss the days when something like Yoshi's Island could be released and blow minds. I haven't truly loved a 2D Mario since SMW. Everything else just seems kind of derivative of that and SMB3.

This is just my opinion though, and if you love New Super Mario Brothers, it's not like I'm judging you or something. I don't even think these are bad games. They're just not interesting to me anymore. It feels like they've stopped experimenting.

In the meantime, I'll continue to wait for Nintendo to truly start blowing my mind again in the 2D department.

At night they can be pretty nice.

They are the devil's anus during the day.

Just started listening to this podcast and have only gone through the latest 2 episodes. I'm enjoying it quite a bit and plan to subscribe. It has probably been asked before but have you guys described your Japanese-learning journey on the show yet (ie formal, self-study, etc)? Or maybe what would you say if you could give one piece of advice to people still learning?

I saw on twitter the guys met Shidoshi and the 8-4 crew. Here's hoping next year the stars align and we get the X-over Japanese gaming podcast to end all all Japanese gaming podcasts :)

So I'm guessing there were no podcasts recorded during TGS?

Chryz's link about says they will have a TGS discussion up within a few days

There's been a lot of crossovers happening lately. If it does happen I expect 15 hours of podcasting with a rotating crew.

Looking forward to the new episode.
RSG has quickly taken a place among the most informative gaming podcasts out there, in my eyes.
Wish I started listening sooner.

Mehdi is back nice.....

Older RSG is interesting in retrospect. Now the podcast usually has four dudes, but it is funny now to think of the times when it was a +3 hour podcast with just two. That's some stamina.
