Reggie on CNN: "3rd-party games like CoD look dramatically better on our system"

I find it hilarious that the measure of a CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER'S success according to NEOGaf, is how well he can suck nerd dick in interviews. Wow, GAF. Wow.

Your suggestion is that it should be measured by how successfully he's able to lie to people? You don't think that could negatively impact Nintendo's reputation, something that the firm has labored for decades to make as publicly clean as possible?

Really?

The thing that got me while watching the interview, was that the right questions were being asked, but Reggie either outright lied or skirted around the questions. Maybe he's gearing up for a senatorial race. He'd fit right in with all the other politicians.
Besides the "dramtically looking better games" comment, i actually think he did a good job answering the questions.

Because there is not enough power in the system. R700 at 40nm is 12 gflops per watt at best. To get 600 you need at least 50watts.

The wiiu uses 34 watts and that includes everything. Using 100% for just gpu is 396 gflops.

More likely around 25 watts for gpu is 300 gflops.

Well according to Nintendo it's a lot higher than that.

Nintendo also revealed that the system will consume only 75 W of power under full load, which is about half as much as current generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

Sorry link isn't working for some reason. Just Google Wii U power consumption. It's the second article down.

Again I'm not agreeing with reggie that it is a dramatic difference, but color accuracy looks better and things look a bit clearer to me than both ps3 and 360

The Wii U vs 360 screens on Digital Foundry show two identical looking games in terms of color, resolution and detail.

P.S. Lens of Truth's Wii U colors differ from the 360 shots, whereas on Digital Foundry the colors look identical. Personally the fact that LoT's Wii U screens don't reach blackest black tells me that it's not "better."

He's the damn COO. If individual department budgets start spiraling out of control, IT infrastructure is not kept up-to-date, resources aren't being properly allocated or divisions aren't being properly staffed, sure....whatever.

But because he's doing his job to oversell his companies products? The hell out of here with that. He's the COO of the North American branch of a Japanese company, not the damn President of the U.S. People need to stop projecting.

Now i see why this thread is still going from this morning

Looks like the Wii U's RGB problem rearing it's head on LoT's capture equipment.

"12 of the most beloved franchises in history." You mean like Balloon Fight, Takamaru's Castle and a shitty Game & Watch game? Where the hell was Kirby or Star Fox? Hell, Wave Race and Pilotwings are more beloved than those.

We are going by actual measurements of system power usage, not the rating of the power brick or Nintendo's advertising materials.

Look dramatically better? lol. Is that true?

There's no objective proof otherwise. Given frame by frame comparisons of the current 3rd party library it is flat out false. Maybe some developer can harness that slightly better GPU, but the CPU seems to be a bottleneck.

That's classic Reggie.

What's going on in here?

Reputation? I'm pretty sure he is doing his job (actually doing it perfectly i guess) or Iwata would have cut ties/losses A LONG time ago.

Yes... it's perfectly okay to lie. It just depends on your job!

Heaven forbid people on a gaming forum point out & critique what a COO of a gaming company said. That's just strange.

Wow.

I pretty much had the same reaction (in bold) after reading that post.

Maybe is just a hangover from the Election Day earlier this month in the States, but Reggie certainly had some good old politician spin on those answers.

EDIT:

Not sure what else any rational person would expect from any company in that situation

Congrats. You pointed out that companies try to up sell their product.

GAF journalism at its finest.

Wow.

"Iwata needs to fire his ass"

"Howard Lincoln would never "tarnish" Nintendo's reputation"

"Reggie needs to resign"

Are you for real with that ish? Did he lie about Nintendo's earnings or sales projections? No. He exaggerated and oversold his company's products. OH THE HUMANITY! Controversy!

Clearly what he should've said in the interview is that the Wii U sucks, and not to buy it because it doesn't have dat badass memory bandwidth.

*facepalm*

A lie is not an exaggeration... it is a lie.

He didn't need to bad mouth the Wii U. He could have said something like "The Wii U provides the definitive COD experience over other consoles". That would be contentious, but it's not a blatant lie.

Man, we still have the PS4 and 720 threads to go. Amazing.

Don't you guys even get it? Companies should be able to lie to consumers without any backlash. Why are people even angry about him lying? Its not like any of you have even bought the console. You have to buy the console before you can criticize. So go buy the console and then come back, then you can criticize Reggie.

With any luck you will become defensive about your purchase and start believing everything Nintendo says and protect them with your life.

I'm pretty sure Reggie has been posed similar questions before and hes always avoided direct comparisons to the PS3/360 in a more deft manner. So clearly he did not have to say what he did. Its interesting that he chose now to not only say the machine is more graphically capable, but he used CoD as an example.

And I'll echo the comments that that was a surprisingly informed interview with relevant questions.

Heh, he didn't just over-exaggerate. He lied as well. There is a difference.

As someone who is a gamer that follows up on game news, of course I'm going to be in disbelief about it.

I was the same way back in 2006 when it came to what Sony was saying. There are many similarities. So no, it's not because it's Nintendo.

Clearly what he should've said in the interview is that the Wii U sucks, and not to buy it because it doesn't have dat badass memory bandwidth.

*facepalm*

Yes, that's clearly what everyone in here really wants since you know... we are all out to destroy a company that made the majority of us become gamers.

Amazing. Simply amazing. Incredible defending.

Guys reggie is a ceo. He doesnt know the ins and outs of the Wii U like Iwata. Hes not purposely lying here, hes just answering on the fly on a small time CNN hong kong interview. Dont make this something its not.

hey hey hey

leave balloon trip out of this

It's his job to know these things. He should have just dodged the question, or put the emphasis on the extra power needed to stream the full experience to the gamepad.

I don't think he's necessarily being intentionally misleading... but he really shouldn't make claims like this unless he has all the information. It's sloppy work.

If this was a Sony rep these same people would be singing a different tune. All Reggie had to do was not use the COD name as a comparison, and it would have flown under the radar, but he didn't. No one is bashing Nintendo as a company here, so wtf at these recent cheerleaders coming in here up in arms over nothing.

There is NOTHING to be in disbelief about. He's upselling his company's products. It's not a controversy. It's not a big deal. If Reggie would've said that the Wii U can play Blu Ray movie, that'd be different. But this? No.

I felt the same way when Sony was bragging about Toy Story quality graphics on PS2. Did I care? No. That's SCEA hyping up and exaggerating about their products. Who cares? The "Emotion Engine"? LOL, that was rich. But who cares? That's what companies do. Overhype their shit.

You have a reallllly bad habit of projecting on people who don't agree with you. Chill with that, yo. This is about people overreacting to an exec selling his company's products. Stay on point.

I heard someone from Sony said the ps3 was just hitting its stride this year. That was ALSO said by Sony in previous years! 'Nuff said, should i make the thread or do you guys got it?

This thread already has 23 pages, I'm pretty sure were past that stage.

If you don't care, and it's not a big deal, then why are you in here ranting about upselling and all the other bs. Apparently it is a big deal to you that a Nintendo CEO has come under criticism in a gaming forum. Not even in the mainstream press, but a gaming forum; let that sink in a bit. Now who needs to chill out, and stay on point?

Since someone said there should be a thread about this interview - here you go.

Reggie talked about the WiiU including some stuff about the competition and how it's different to the Wii.

Wouldn't have expected some of the questions from CNN.

Woa... that was kind of interesting to see (video). They kind of took the console seriously and didn't talk about it w/ light hearted music w/ constant laughing.

"Videogames! Kids love em and theres a new boy in town! The wiiu. This is a new wii and its fun for the whole family! I wont be getting it, they are too addicting! *chuckles*"

Guys, we can laugh at marketing shills distorting the truth (gasp, lying!) without calling for their heads. These are video games, people.

Similarly, we can laugh at marketing shills without it being assumed to be hatred aimed at Nintendo or its fans. These are video games, people.

I'm sure you can reach a bit farther than that.

"Nintendo will kill you're kids!"

Reggie's smart, he's made an exaggeration more than an outright lie. Nothing that will "negatively impact Nintendo's reputation" outside of the odd outraged otaku from time to time.
