Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

I don't know how this mod continues to make me think "No fuckin way. That's SO GOOD." every single time I visit. You're constantly surprising me with your dedication to improvements. Great work you both.

What about pitching this to Capcom Albert?

I'd rather buy this than the simple upres port that is gonna arrive on PS4.

I would be wary of this

I know earlier in the thread I said Capcom would never shut something like this down because it's helping to drive sales to their product, and I stand by that statement

However, the moment you go to them and try and strike a release deal, those circumstances change slightly and that to me feels like a risk

We've been in discussion with them in the past. But we haven't heard from Capcom re: our RE4 project since about a year ago. Of course, we don't know what's going on internally...
There's nothing else we can do (or say about this) I'm afraid
But I rather this way right now! because we can work without pressures nor deadlines ;)

Agreed. Take it easy and get it just right.

By the way I hope that when this is all done that you tell us more about your adventures and searches for the original photos/textures and objects. I remember seeing that comparison photo of a worn rock wall and being absolutely stunned. Think of it like a Spain history tour or something. :P

First page is hilarious now

1-2 years of your free time? I don't want to sound mean, but you could teach yourself a new language and a new career in that amount of time.

This is a waste of time OP. Work on game projects that way your work will mean something and can lead to something. This type of thing won't lead to anything. Go to tigsource or a similar site and look to contribute to projects. You have some ability, don't waste it on this because it won't mean anything. Anyone that tries to encourage him to waste time on this can fuck off and go waste their time doing this.

Oh and look at this twat:

No offence, but there is an extremely high probability you will not finish this, considering the insane estimate of a timeframe of 2 years.

Get a team.

Thank you everyone for your comments :D

I was able to find some of the original textures because Capcom came to Europe in 2000 (aprox.) and one of the places they visited was my city, Barcelona.

Not just in RE4, you can find textures from their trip to Spain and Wales in REmake, Devil May Cry and Haunting Gruond games. Even in REvelations 2 there are still some remaining textures from those pictures they took so may years ago.

And... how I was able to found them? Well... this is hard to explain.

I've been working on this game's textures since the first PC port was released.
I recognized by chance one door (or window, or wall... I can't remember) while searching in Google for good resolution pictures to use as a replacement in the game. (by that time I was looking for similar textures, not the same). And then I saw something and I thought: "hey, that door... is almost identical to the one in the game... no wait... it's the same door!!"
Then I pulled the thread and I found some other textures in the Internet in the same location/building.

It was a city in Spain. And the architectonical style of lots of textures used in the game looked familiar to me. So, I guessed lots of them should come from Spain, too.

As time went by, I was able to locate most of the locations Capcom visited during their trip (in Spain and in UK) I went to those cities and I took pictures of the same things.

And yes, I took several pictures and then I put together all the pieces :)

Amazing
It's like it was your destiny to take on this project.

I would also love to hear about the guys adventures in tracking down the locations used in the game.

I do too.

Someone for the love of god help this team with a lighting mod....after all that updated model goodness could use a kick in the ass to the lighting system

I'm really hoping for this, but if something hasn't come along by now after 2 years I'm not sure it'll happen. According to this old post you can inject ambient occlusion using gedosato, but I'm not sure how well it works. I haven't found any other concrete ways of adding things like AO or beyond.

Love the work you've put in so far. Can I ask if all these textures have been tested in the game. Is it playing fine? Also what kind of machine has it been tested on? Would love some info regarding this when you have time.

Amazing work. You guys deserve a documentary. Would love to see the process and places. The dedication to this game is simply breathtaking. So glad I donated to this project

Do you guys feel that you will finish this project by Fall 2016?

It would be nice to choose between this or the capcom RE4 HD for PS4.

Obviously Capcom should be smart and get you guys on board for the PS4 version - youve done more than half the work for them and with a bigger team you guys would be able to reach the deadline. But I feel they wont do that.

When the project started, there were occasions where I wondered if the new textures were gritty enough; cleaning them up in HD had the unfortunate effect of making them look too pure. I think you're over that now, there's a great amount of grit in these:

At first I wasn't sure about the shadowing on the floor being pulled back so much, but looking at the other shadows, I think the new texture is more realistic. The original floor seems way too dark where the columns meet.

Is it exciting knowing that you're nearing the end of the game, or are you dreading the start of all the other textures? :P

Haha! Nope. Stage textures are the biggest part of the project... fortunatelly!

Do you guys feel that you will finish this project by Fall 2016?.

I don't think so. Even stage textures is the biggest part, a lot of work remain to be done (characters, enemies, items, menus...)

Loving the work on Krauser. It's weird that the metallic door has a handle since it's an automatic slide door.

That one in not a slide door (judging by the sound it makes when opening it). But I removed the door handles for next room's sliding doors ;)

On the sign above Leon that says "WORKING" it looks like you changed it to "ATENCIÓN" and changed the text to Spanish? Makes sense since the game takes place in Spain :)

Will you also work on the character/gun models?

They'll do that after the environments are done. But really, the environments are the main problem that needed to be fixed. The characters and items have held up far better... Still excited to see how they turn out, but I'm firing up the game as soon as the environments are done. I've been holding off on a replay for too long.

They've done that for a ton of the textures in the game. It does make things a little more realistic.

What choice is there to even make? Even without considering this mod , this version is capable of 4k, 60fps and Steam controller support (though you could use the DS4 if you wanted to)... and it will probably be a hell of a lot cheaper.

Revelations looks like utter trash, that's not really a feat :p

In fairness that game was mind blowing on the 3DS. It's still one of the most impressive games on the system.

Pretty sure he means putting these textures into the PS4 version and selecting between the fan made HD and capcoms "HD."

Leon's model is already really good, so I think the guns should come before the characters.

But fuck it, I'll stream it once the environments are done.
