Resident Evil 5 releasing June 28th on PS4/XB1

Only in terms of control and GUI. Premise wise, it still counts as survival horror IMO.
But it ends with Leon riding out of an exploding island on a water jet while a beautiful woman tries to flirt with him after he explodes a giant monster man with a rocket launcher and delivering an Arnold Schwarzenegger-esque one liner. There's a couple minute long QTE battle where you flex and show off knives with your old action buddies. One of the first lines of the game is "Where's everyone going, bingo?", and your mission from the start is to go save the President's daughter, because youre the only dude bad enough to get the job done.

The whole thing is a giant schlocky action movie with a creepy castle stuck in the middle. A creepy castle under the command of a silly comedy dwarf. A silly comedy drawf who is protected by the Predator and banters with Leon like Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

I find RE4 to be as much of an action game as RE5. I spent the whole game shooting and suplexing fools.

There's a line that I draw that RE5 steps over to become more action title than survival horror, but that RE4 steps right up against but doesn't cross. RE4 you still get the feeling of being alone, underpowered, and disadvantaged. RE5 you're bad ass from the start.

I felt way more badass in 4 than I ever did in 5.

Yeah, not buying any of this talk that it's authentic. That describes it well.

I still have no idea if anyone likes this game or NeoGAF's joshing around.

It's because of Leon's cool hair and devil-may-care attitude.

I'm planning on buying it when I deliberately skipped RE6 because it was bad. Again 4 is one of my favorite games of all time but it's equal parts action and horror, probably trending a little towards action once you leave the castle. REmake just fills me with a sense of dread that 4 never even comes close to, and RE5 just tips the scales a little further towards action because Chris is part of the BSAA and knows what he's doing. Then RE6 is bad for reasons other than horror/action balance.

4 goes full on action with crazy set pieces don't why people don't mention that. You have a giant statue of Salazar chasing you at one point.

Well there is it lol.

I think Titanoboa explains it pretty well:

And that's without counting that part of the game where you're shooting through an army with backup from a frigging helicopter. All this stuff makes it feel really action oriented and silly to me. There are a couple of sections that are a bit more frightening in tone (Verdugo's fight is very tense for example), but overall it feels just as silly as RE5 to me. And there's no normal enemy in RE4 that makes me clench my butt like the reapers in RE5.

Well I disagree, but I think we can all agree that RE4 is an excellent game nonetheless.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
RE4 feels like an evolution of the earlier titles. RE5 is very similar to 4, but takes the action to a new level, gets rid of typewriters, and gets rid of an interconnected world entirely. It's true that 5 is more like 4 than anything else, but 5 also started the complete removal of the series from the earlier titles. I think both arguments in here are right. If anything, 4-5-6 are a gradual evolution to an action horror series from a survival horror series. It makes sense that 4 would feel the most like a middle ground in that case.

So, umm, is anyone else having connecting issues on Xbone?

My brother and I can't join each others games. We tried everything, invites, free play, we're gold members and have no trouble with our internet or other multiplayer =/

Yeah, it's an incredibly fun game. I want to replay it for the 4th time but I'm waiting for the HD texture mod. Hopefully, it gets finished within the next year or two.

Although I loved 5, 4 is kinda brooding and gothic for the first two thirds of the game...RE5 never felt that. The opportunity would have been the
ruins
but it never really had that, plus the ways the monks in RE4 operate with their low chants etc was kinda creepy. Not scary, per se but I think RE4 had much more of a horror/opressive atmosphere than RE5 ever did.

That said they both shoot for two different things and do it pretty well so it doesn't really matter.

Amazing post. Love RE4 tho.

I think I might have to buy this just so I can play as Sheva again.

Has Digital Foundry done an analysis yet? I would hope this is running 1080p/60fps on PS4.

Not out on PS4.

It's available now for XB1.

Get it together Sony. It's embarrassing at this point. Your late afternoon store updates are incredibly antiquated.

Are you that anxious to play a 7 year old game?

In US?...prolly wont go live until the Store Update tomorrow afternoon.

Pre-order/pre-load was not available on PSN.

It'll become available today, Tuesday, when the PSN Store updates.

Perf-wise, both XB1 and PS4 perform very similar to each other. They have variable framerate but capped at 60fps. 1080p native resolution on both.

FPS will fluctuate sometimes in RE5 (45-60fps) especially in busy areas and lots of enemies, but game speed/responsiveness should feel consistent regardless of frame rate variance. You may have seen some YouTube footages already, but the game runs at 60fps in most areas.

The opening movie before you take control of Chris for the first time is pre-rendered at 720p/30fps. That's the source footage and that's how it was originally created. PC version is also the same.

All other cutscenes are real-time rendered.

Really looking forward to some impressions from GAF on this one. Anyone play it a bit and care to share your thoughts?

I'm really interested in playing this again, but I'm not sure if I'm paying £17 for a game I've bought twice over already in the past. Hope we get a good tech breakdown soon from Digital Foundry or NX Gamer.

A lot of those are series tropes, though. RE2 ends with Leon riding out of an exploding underground lab while holding onto the bottom of a train; every game pretty much has the same conclusion to the final boss fight with another character throwing you a rocket launcher or similar weapon (RE0 subverts this in its own way - over-the-top slowmo while Billy catches and fires the weakest gun in the game); RE3 has Jill telling Nemesis that "if [he] wants STARS, [she]'ll give hims STARS"; Carlos and Billy flirt with their respective counterparts despite the circumstances; the over-the-top cut-scene fights between Wesker and Alexia. Even Salazar is just a more overtly comical version of Alfred without the psychosis.

RE4 amplifies all of these, to kind of expose how ridiculous the series had become, while merging them with an atmosphere that recalls that of the original game (a domestic setting which has become subjugated by the uncanny, before moving on to more institutionalised settings). I mean, yeah it's a departure from the previous games, but one which draws upon the components that they're made from and does so in an intentionally subversive way. RE4 is a very obvious reinvention, but it does remain true to its origins despite that.

So now that it is out and people can verify.

Does PS4 splitscreen work like 360 now or is it still the shitty PS3 style, where only one person can play on their profile and unlock weapons/trophies/progression, because the co-op partner is just a guest?

My wife and I want to play through again in splitscreen, but whereas 360 let us play with one system and both profiles, on PS3 it required us to have two PS3's and play online co-op to get the full experience for both our profiles.

I'm waiting for an answer on this too.

Exactly, I will never agree with those people that say RE4 and RE5 are essentially the same. Whilst it is an action game it still takes it's time and builds plenty of tension. The Village encounter, Verdugo boss fight and any of the regenerator encounters are right up there with the series' most tense moments IMO. I still felt I had to manage my ammo and inventory effectively, particularly in my first playthrough.

I really like RE5, but it's a full-on co-op action game, and contains none of the elements of the previous games that RE4 effectively recalls and integrates. It's basically a slower-paced Gears of War.

game looks great as it always did (from footage ive seen so far). i played the hell out of this game on 360 and PC, but watching it in action makes me want to buy the HD port and play it again.

easily the best of the action RE's for me. RE6 is on sale this week, but im finding it hard to want to go back and play that over this.

I don't suppose there are any plans to offer the new Mercenaries mode on the PC version are there?

The description on the Xbox store:

One of the most popular Resident Evil titles comes to Xbox One in full 1080p HD with an increased frame rate. Featuring single-player and co-op modes and a dramatic storyline, this fully-loaded release includes all previously released DLC (Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape story expansions, Versus mode, extra figures and 4 costumes), and the previously PC-exclusive No Mercy mode, as well as the new mode “The Mercenaries United” which combines the two fan-favorite modes, The Mercenaries and The Mercenaries Reunion for an even more intense experience.

This doesn't sound new. Sounds more like a convenience of having them both in one menu without having to change mode every time. Unless we are talking about a completely different set of enemy encounters.

EDIT: Yeah, and also being able to use all the characters in both modes.

That doesn't mention anything about it being Xbone/PS4 exclusive.

I'm not sure it's going to be exclusive or else why would a console owner get this remastered version that supposedly has everything that was previously released? Making a mode exclusive sounds stupid as hell to me.

RE4 and 5 are basically identical and if 5 had come first, it would be the "chosen one".

But by the time it had come around, people had worked out that most of 4 was pretty poor. Only the start of 4, with the breaking into houses in was magical. This is in 5 too, but we had already seen it all before. Remember the escort missions and the hedge maze and the clowns? Nope people tend to forget all that.

Still reasonable fun though.

It's new enough. If I'm understanding what I've read and seen correctly it means that the new release no longer has a mode with The Mercenaries rules, and only uses Reunion rules, which means that No Mercy is different from the PC version of No Mercy.

The Resident Evil series is littered with examples of ports with exclusive content.

I wonder if Mercenaries United was always planned? I remember seeing a YouTube video on cut RE5 content and it featured a lot of clips of Wesker saying the names of characters only featured in mercenaries reunion like Barry and Josh, which he had no reason to say because there was no Wesker available in reunion mode.

That was almost certainly done so that they have the voice clips they need for additional content without having to pay the voice actors for another session. It's why I'm curious about the intro dialogue when playing as Jill and Josh in Mercenaries United.
