combining Dengeki sales for Ridge Racer (253k) with the data I have from Famitsu, seems like the multiplier could be 2,5
If I remember correctly the know Famitsu multiplier (3.5?) before they switched to nation-wide charts was valid only for the period between February and October 1996.
The multipliers used before February 1996 aren't known.

I've been looking for this for a long time, but there truly is no data on how the classic Sega games made on their early consoles in Japan, is there?

I'm talking about stuff like the early Sonic, Phantasy Star games and some arcade ports like Altered Beast or Golden Axe.

The only pre Saturn data for Sega consoles I have is some late Mega Drive games, 1994 stuff, nothing prior to that.

I dunno, is just crazy to think that there's no data on how the original Sonic The Hedgehog sold over there given the popularity of the series.

Further looking into Celine's numbers I think I've found something interesting regarding Japan sales of Sonic 2.

Quoting from the April 1993 issue of Sega Force Magazine, don't know what the policy on scans is here so won't post them for now.
Sega Force said:
In other news, Sonic 2's enormous overseas success has surprisingly not been matched in Japan. Sega boldly aimed for sales of a million units and spent ¥1.3 billion on an advertising campain. So far the returns have been nothing short of dissapointing.
Sega officially claims to have sold 400.000 units. However, inside sources claim sales have been about half as that level. Now Sonic 2 has dissapeared from the Japanese top 30 video games chart, the one million figure appears far beyond reach.

By making these comparisons with Famitsu and Dengeki (and media-create?) we can come up with a good formula for pre-1996. PSX will need a different formula than the other consoles because Famitsu tracked Sony outlets so closely/accurately.

I found using 10-12x works before Feb 1994 (when 4.35x becomes the formula) back to 1992 for Famitsu weekly charts.

Are the figures (the ones lower than 1M) in the forth image shipment data?

My wish would be finding Sega software shipment data worldwide...

EDIT:
If someone want to compare Softbank figures with Famitsu:

I've been trying to find Saturn million sellers worlwide. I know Sega USA said the Daytona/Virtua Cop/Virtua Fighter 2 bundle did 500k, so I imagine those three were million sellers worldwide. I've seen arguments made for Sega Rally and VF1 too.

Sega million seller series in Japan as December 2006 (shipment data from CESA White Paper):

Virtua Fighter (NGC, PS2, SS, DC, 32X, PC): 4.54M
Sakura Wars (GB, SS, DC): 3.50M
Sonic (MD, GG, 32X, SS, DC, NGC, GBA): 3.25M
Sakatsuku (SS, DC): 3.00M
Shining (MD, SS; GG): 1.55M
Sega Rally (SS, DC): 1.32M
Phantasy Star (MkIII, MD, GG, SS, DC): 1.31M
Oshare Majo Love and Berry (NDS) : 1.09M

Interesting.

So far, from my research, I would say:
-Virtua Fighter 2
-Virtua Fighter
-Virtua Cop
-Daytona USA
-Sega Rally Championship

are likely million seller worldwide. I wonder if Nights is too, but I cant seem to find Europe sales for it. Sega USA pushed the game pretty hard but Im not sure how Sega Europe treated it.

Fighters Megamix too has a chance.
The problem is all those games if they are are million seller on Saturn, they are likely by a hair considering Sega Rally is just at 1.2 million.

Well, here is where I got the Daytona/VC/VF2 bundle did 500k in the US. That JPN Saturn top 10 earlier in this thread has those 3 games over 500k, so I consider them WW sellers.

Fighters Megamix did 600k in Japan according to that magazine. It came to the US in 1997 when Sega USA was already givingup on the system, so I doubt it would have made it.

EDIT: What's also interesting is I wonder what the best selling 3rd party game on it is. Street Fighter Alpha 2?

MikeMyers

According to Saturn Magazine Reader's Book LTD sales that Moor-Angol posted Super Robot Taisen F did 548,780 while Street Fighter Zero 2 did 423,449. Alpha 2 would have had to sold around 125,000 in the West to beat it. Might have been possible considering Alpha 2 came out in the West in 1996, when the Saturn was still somewhat alive lol.

The problem is the accuracy of the tracking firms especially for old data.
That's why I always prefer shipment data.

I doubt that you'll find shipment numbers for Saturn software, which leaves only sales trackers, which may or may not be accurate. Anyway, if we go by shipments through 99/03 then of the 9.08m which were WW, 5.75m (63%) were sold in Japan, 1.80m (20%) in North America (of which NPD claims 1.4m sold in the US, or 15%), and 1.00m (11%) in Europe (of which Gallup/Chart-Track claim 0.4m in the UK, or 4%). The three major Saturn markets (JP, US, UK) are estimated to make up 83% of the WW market. JP + US alone are estimated to make up 78%.

You can add Softbank (JP) numbers to NPD (US) numbers and get a rough idea of WW numbers, although I think that maybe the source of the NPD numbers (Terry Travis) may not use the originally reported numbers, but adds his own multiplier, which is not good practice IMO. Maybe he can comment on that. UK (Chart-Track) estimates are not publicly available from back then, but were tracked. Maybe we can convince them to release their data one day, I'm sure that 20 year old sales data has zero commercial value these days.

MikeMyers

Member
Yeah I've spoken to Terry about Saturn US Sales before.

He had Nights NPD at around 220k while for Japanese sales while Saturn Magazine Reader's Book gave Nights a 500k LTD in Japan. This adds up to 720k, which means Nights would have had to sell 280k in Europe to break a million. I cant really see that unless it was a bundled game or something.

My monthly data was compiled in about 2002, I received updated HW totals compiled around 2004/5 and adjusted the monthly data to fit the new annuals if they was any change. The original 2002 data, where there was any difference between the two sets, had even lower figures (rarely higher). I assumed the newer data is more accurate.

Thank you BKK, VF2 is at 1.7m which is inline with what others have said for awhile, this shows the formula used on the NOV database is indeed too low (3.65) for 1995, the prevous formula he used before that time frame (4.35) may be better. I remember reading the message board on that site ages ago and that the site owner had changed his formula because someone claimed VF2 only sold 1.3m (I think he used to use 5.3), so that's where that formula (3.65) came from.
HOWEVER, that formula is too high for PSX figures, Famitsu tracked Sony products better than others, a new formula needs to be used for PSX during those years, we have Dengeki figures from that time now... something that works inline with Dengeki.

Just discovered: http://web.archive.org/web/20080511172935/http://www.gamejin.net/
It's the Dengeki TOP100 between 1993 - 2003, great for comparing with famitsu and testing a new formula for older data.

Right, but they didn't track hardware (or at least didn't report them), and wouldn't have been able to track overseas sales. The Japan number matches Sega's shipped number through 99/03, and the regions match the regions which Sega reported shipments for Saturn. So it should be shipments through 99/03. The question is where the 180k extra reported by CESA comes from. My guess is Victor and/or Hitachi shipments (Victor shipped 50k in 1994 and were forecasting a total of 220k by the end of 1995).

So you're confident these figures come from Sega? The US estimate is well below other estimates of 2 (http://www.nytimes.com/1998/03/14/b...urn-video-console-us-market.html?pagewanted=1) to 2.7 (http://www.zdnet.com/article/sega-makes-play-for-dreamcast-support/) million.

that's interesting, the problem I found while getting SS and PS1 launch title sales was that Ridge Racer had sold more than PS1, cause I used the usual multiplier (3,65 iirc).
if we could find a correct formula for both SS and PS1 meanwhile I retrieve the missing famitsu issues we could finally have an idea about how much sold those games back then.

Yeah, pretty sure, the Japanese number matches other sources for shipped numbers, and the reported regions are the same regions that Sega reported shipments for at that time. The first link just rounds to the nearest million (U.S. gets rounded up to 2m from 1.75m, JP gets rounded down from 5.2m to 5m - last numbers available prior to the article). Second link is just some analyst's estimate, not very reliable at all. That number was pretty close to Western shipments though, so maybe he just conflated US with the West.

Anyway, I'm now pretty convinced that Saturn never shipped any more units in the FY ending March 2000. According to Nikkei's report Sega shipped 950,000 consoles to Japan that FY, which is the number of Dreamcasts they shipped to Japan that year. This source also shows no Japanese Saturn shipments that year.

180k difference between Sega shipments and the CESA number should be from Hitachi HiSaturn and/or Victor V-Saturn shipments (I'm guessing there's less chance that CESA would have access to Samsung Saturn sales).

That would be great if you can get the famitsu issues! I found using x4.35 for 1994 and maybe thru 1995, while using x2.5 for PSX, works (the x2.5 gives RR equal to Dengeki's figures). So launch week: SAT x4.35, PSX x2.5, everything else x4.35.
I also never liked that 1.3m for VF2, 1.7m was reported elsewhere.

I've found a website who's owner has nearly every Famitsu from 1986 - 1992. I've asked him to start posting the TOP30 from SFC launch forward.

Speaking to the reliability of the analyst, how accurate is his estimate of 13.4 million PlayStations sold in the US by the end of 1998?

Probably too low, PS1 production shipments for North America were at 19.48 million through 1998.

I already bought some issues on last summer, I will post what I've found to show how sales obtained by points and the usual multiplier (3.65) are not correct comparing Ridge Racer and PS1 sales as end of December 1994 (too much RR sales considering how few PS1 were sold, due to stock problems)
I didn't know that 4.35 multiplier for SS and 2.5 for PS1, maybe with those sales could matching Dengeki numbers

373.926 sold in 1996

I know but it's not properly correct cause they counted 1995 week 52 and 1995 week 1 together and if you check the 1996 top100 you will notice VF2 LTD are missing (I refer to the old "Shrine of Data" site), then seems like they revised the LTD as it's reported on geimin.net with VF2 sales barely above 1mln units, that's too low
and we just have top100 from 1996

Virtua Fighter
week 1 - 17,731pt (from geimin.net)
week 2 - 16,698pt (famitsu #315 I bought)
week 3 - 16,881pt (famitsu #317, seems like #316 doesn't exist)
week 4 - 2,457 (http://homepage2.nifty.com/~NOV/d318.html, probably stock issues)
week 5 - 13,420 (http://homepage2.nifty.com/~NOV/d319.html, 2 weeks counted : 1994/12/19 - 1995/1/1)

Total : 67,187pt
Saturn units sold up to 1994/12/31 : 300k ?

using 4.35 multiplier VF should have sold 292k

Ridge Racer
week 1 - 45,008pt (geimin and confirmed from my #315 issue)
week 2 - 17,745pt
week 3 - 9,854pt (stock issues here too?)
week 4 - 28,783pt

Total : 101,390pt
PS1 units sold up to 1994/12/31 : around 280-300k

using 2.5 multiplier RR should have sold 253k

I think both data could be right or at least they could match SW:HW tie-ratio in a much better way than the 3.65 multiplier

my project was to find all famitsu issues not listed into homepage.nifty.com, this could have given to us LTD for a lot of missing games such as Ridge Racer and Tekken for PS1, Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon and Daytona for SS

Travis, I can send you pictures of all the issues I have but remember I don't have a scan so the quality might not be as good as yours :)

I have some Dengeki data:
launch week:
PSX - 101k
SS - 107k

LTD at 5 weeks:
PSX - 275k
SS - 257k

LTD at 13 weeks:
PSX - 487k
SS - 487k

And please do share the Top30 scans :)

Wait, what's the number for Panzer Dragoon then? That seems like a contender for a million seller worldwide.

I tried to add in Saturn million sellers to the Wikipedia list, but it got ignored. Sigh...

Panzer Dragoon = 401,281 from that mag scan above.

I have some Dengeki data:
launch week:
PSX - 101k
SS - 107k

LTD at 5 weeks:
PSX - 275k
SS - 257k

LTD at 13 weeks:
PSX - 487k
SS - 487k

Famitsu data are really different according to that scanned page

Saturn
end of Dec.1994 - 170k
end of Jan.1995 - 500k
end of Feb.1995 - 700k
end of Mar.1995 - 800k

and 800k is also confirmed in many post on the first page about the 1994 fiscal year result, which ended on March 1995

what differs so much is the result by the end of 1995, if just 170k Saturn were sold and VF had 67k pt the 4.35 multiplier doesn't work
but also I feel strange that the Saturn barely sold 70k in 4 weeks (assuming that 100k were sold at launch week) and the following 4 weeks (January) it sold 230k...
last but not least, we know that PS1 and SS were neck to neck in the beginning, and also Famitsu stated that 300k PS1 were sold in 1994, so how could it possible that PS1 was at 300k and SS only at 170k ???

on the opposite Dengeki sales seem more stable week after week

according to BKK quoted scans there were 500k Saturn shipped by the end of 1994, so the only answer I can find about that Famitsu numbers I showed is that "94.12 means "up to Dec.1994", so 170k sold in two weeks, 500k up to Jan.1994 (until Dec.31, 1994) and this would match what Edge reported into its article (and based on Famitsu data).
Famitsu reported 840k Saturn sold by the end of 1994 FY (see first page), so that "95.3" could mean by the end of February, and just 40k were sold during March 1995
in this case x4.35 should be accepted as a good multiplier
