Retronauts Podcast Thread

I always felt like GT was a niche game, while MK was more of a massive mainstream one. They are probably talking about the latter games (nfs, burnout, franchises that reached the top but eventually fell off)

I don't think you can be a niche franchise when there are multiple games with 10m+ sales, and even the PSP version broke 4m.

I only ever played the first one myself, way back in 98. I prefer arcade racers to the simulation ones. It's a shame NFS, Midnight Club and Burnout all lost their way.

I'm just sad that I somehow missed the call for Listener Mail on that Link's Awakening episode. Link's Awakening was my favorite Zelda game until Breath of the Wild. I've replayed it so many times I lost count.

MacVenture series in on sale on Steam. Just over two bucks for all four games, Deja Vu 1 and 2, Shadowgaye, Uninvited. Looks like emulator packages. It suppposedly come with IIGS versions too.

Great episode! It was nice to hear Kat break up the usual cast, and she brought a really fresh perspective on the topic.

It was also a relief to hear some love for Link's Awakening after it was raked over the coals somewhat on Back in my Play. It definitely has its rough edges with the Straw Millionaire concept, and I wish it had a built in hint system to smooth over this, but it remains my favourite 2D Zelda by a significant margin.

I played LTTP much later and it always seemed so sober and dull in comparison. It's one of the three Zelda games I've never beaten. I need more weird in my Zelda games.

I knew about For Whom the Frog Bell Tolls, but didn't know the Zelda connection.

Finally got around to playing it a bit - wow, now I understand Fairune so much better, I thought it was a Ys thing, but it's really this.

Also, Fairune is pretty charming. What a weird grind.

Yeah, that's a good point. Fairune definitely leans on this type of win or lose type combat resolution.

I really like For Whom the Frog Bell Tolls.

Working my way through some recent episodes. Just got to the radio ep with CV3, Mario Kart and Link's Awakening. The later one was especially great. I have never played through LA, and I really need to fix that. Maybe a good summer game for me. I own it.

Listening to the Advance Patreon Backer "Cancelled Games" episode while driving to work and I just shot Diet Pepsi through my nose laughing so hard. Thanks Retronauts. XD

The very very last ad on the simpsons arcade episode....wasn't an ad? It was a news report? Weird.

That's disappointing. Wonder if that will be remedied. I'd love to hear an episode on the KOF music especially.

I really don't want episodes done on topics theyhave little familiarity with unless they have guests with a strong knowledge to carry the show. I think it would be easier to get a guest to speak on something like Virtua Fighter (Pretty sure Shane could do a good job carrying that, for example) Tekken or Soul Calibur than it would be to find a King of Fighters expert.

I think the Wrestling episode was the perfect lesson in "People who don't know/care about something maybe shouldn't host an episode about it"

That episode was amazing. Dave, Henry and Michael were great!

And Jeremy trashing early NES and Gameboy wrestling games on his youtube channel is hilarious. He jumps at every opportunity to talk about something other then wrestling:lol

Just finished listening to "Chronicling metroidvania." It's always been super interesting to me how no one can trace the origin of this word exactly given how gaming journalism is still young all things considered. The excerpts from 2003 were cool to hear, but I have a suspicion it goes back a little further than that.

Another great point on the podcast was the domination of FPS/3D Adventure games during the early 00's. I never really cared for those genres on the N64/PS1 and there was definitely a huge drought of the type of games that late Super Nintendo was delivering so well. I'm really glad that indie games in the late 00's brought those genres new life into the mainstream.

The Wrestling episode that's one of the few I really enjoyed that's about a topic I don't give a shit about because the guests were all so enthusiastic and went into so much detail about stuff?

I loved the Wrestling episode if only for the fact it got me listening to LaserTime stuff I think.

Just want to chime in with how much I really, really enjoy the Radio episodes. Jeremy is doing a stellar job with those. His descriptions of the music and his critiques of the various arrangements and instrumentations are excellent. I'm a former entertainment writer for a daily paper who used to cover music and I can tell you from experience that it's not easy to describe and write about music in this way -- even if you're personally a huge music fan. Kudos to ToastyFrog on these. I especially enjoy the solo episodes. Nice work.

Finished up the Metroidvania episode. Jeremy just embracing the chaos by the end was probably the best choice.

And the gin floweth over.

The funny thing is, Chris and I were drinking only coffee and water. The chaos happened without the aid of booze.
It makes sense with the subject matter.

I actually like when episodes go off the rails a bit. It makes me nostalgic for the Sharkey tangents of old.

Question because I recently started a new job- have any of the Zines or companion books from the patreon come out yet? Would love some impressions because I'm thinking of moving up from the $3 tier.

I just finished the content of the Spring zine on Sunday, and as soon as I put the cover together it'll be going out in PDF form (print to follow). The companion book is annual and the first will be coming out at the end of the year.

I know I say this a lot, but the laser one crossovers are by far my favorite.
I was already an avid fan of both podcasts so it was welcome to see them collide.

I guess it was already quite a few years ago when Bob appeared on Laser Time to talk about MST3K, getting the ball rolling...

I was just thinking who is the successor to Jeremy Parish in gaming journalism? Not that anyone can actually replace journalism, but who in is writing now that comes the closest to his support for retro gaming?

Like I'm soo grateful Retronauts got me onto LaserTime, I found a great set of podcasts and the community they have built around them is amazing. The LaserTime Facebook groups is one of my favorite places to hang out on the internet.

Same. I got onto LT via Bob on RN, which got me onto Talking Simpsons. I Patreon back all three.

Always a pleasant surprise when I come across a fellow fan of LT, especially considering it's relatively low listener base.

It really needs an OT on gaf. I've been thinking about making one

You missed his thorough, awesome interview with Yuzo Koshiro on Polygon?

I concur, but I've only been listening to them for the last six months or so (maybe a little longer), so I'm hardly an authoritative figure.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm definitely posting fewer articles these days, but my goal is to make the ones I do publish count for more. I don't have any assigned quotas to hit, so I can step outside the daily grind and focus on depth. I have a lot of material in the queue that has been sitting in limbo until our site relaunched (which happened on Monday), so my hope it to publish at least one substantial interview or retrospective per week. This interview from today is basically the kickoff:

https://retronauts.com/article/421/...rial-mode-of-final-fantasy-xii-the-zodiac-age

(And a companion piece to that should be going up elsewhere before FFXII HD launches.)

BTW Jeremy, digging the new site design :)

Agreed. So many times podcasts get mentioned on here like Bombcast, Easy Allies, etc. but this might be one of the few times I've seen others talk about LT. They absolutely deserve a place among those shows.

I do know there is a thread out there for VGMpire but given Brett's left the guys not sure what the plan is with that at the moment.
But yeah a LaserTime thread would be super super awesome to share all the love for the guys :D
