Retronauts Podcast Thread

New episode is up and its holiday cartoon themed.

It's the Retronauts Holiday 2013 Extravaganza!

“It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been naughty or nice — the Retronauts are back with another holiday spectacular to fill your sinful ears with delight. Join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Ray Barnholt, and special guest Chris Antista as the crew discusses Christmas specials from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Super Mario World, and curses the uncaring god who would let such things happen. (NOTE: This episode has a few audio issues due to unexpected interference from territorial wolves. Sorry!)”

Unfortunately, there is some static in the episode that I downloaded, but hopefully Bob will fix it pretty quickly. The episode itself is pretty great, and its another crossover with Laser Time.

Retronauts Pocket Episode 12: Quake

Doom just turned 20 years old, but Retronauts decides to talk about Quake instead. In my case, sometimes you just don’t realize until the day comes.

Though Quake was id Software’s long-awaited successor to Doom, and even got more sequels, it doesn’t seem to be as fondly remembered. Sometimes it seems like it’s the butt of a joke when talking about “brown” shooters. While Quake was a very brown game, I still don’t like that’s where it ended up — it was fun, honing the speedy run-and-gun gameplay of Doom while helping bring accessible internet multiplayer gaming to the masses, and a mod community that often thought outside the box. And that’s just part of we talk about on this next half-hour of Retronauts Pocket, which is, of course, all about the very first Quake (plus a run-through of the franchise at the end).

Our chat covers the origins of Quake as an aspirational action-RPG; the involvement of Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor; the tech that helped push internet play, and why having the game sold in 7-Eleven was at all notable. Gladly sticking around for the discussion are Dave Rudden and Henry Gilbert from our Wrestlenauts episode, as well. And one or two bits of history in this episode come from David Kushner’s excellent book Masters of Doom, so give that a read if you haven’t yet.

Finally, this episode topic comes to us from Kickstarter backer Michael Nicolai. Our thanks go out to him, and to anyone else who enjoys this episode!

Loved the last Christmas episode, this one just wasn't the same caliber. I know its hard to top "Christmas gaming memories" as a topic, I was just hoping for something a little different. I still enjoy his Christmas cabin theme though, its charming.

Wht have they been rebranded as Pocket Episode's now??

They are counting the holiday episode as a special. Neither a full episode nor a pocket.

So this episode is 12 pocket and the regular episode 12 was Wrestlenauts.

No change, same as it ever was, other than the holiday special.

Ive never listened to this show, but want to check it out. Where do I begin? Just jump right in with the newest and then work backwards?

Yeah. 1up.com still has host the old Retronauts episodes. Since it's retro they're pretty relevant till this day.

I'd recommend getting the last full episode, which was episode 12 and focuses on wrestling games. It is probably the best one so far and representative of the show.

From there, work through the 27 episodes of the current Retronauts.

Then if you are really into it, I'm pretty sure the episodes from the original Retronauts are still hosted on 1up.com (the current iteration was funded through a Kickstarter). There were 105 episodes of it, plus a Goodbye to 1Up that is also worth listening to.

There are several hosts of the original 1up version of the show, including Jeremy who is on it now, Bob and Ray that are also on it now and Scott Sharkey.

I wonder how far away the physical rewards are. I paid $30 for the DVD which was due in July, but I don't mind waiting as long as it comes eventually.

Holy shit that wrestling episode o_O
I loved it and I'm not even fan of wrestling games. This was completely unexpected.

Easily one of my favorite so far with the game music episode. It was so good.

Thanks!

^bookmarked! totally got some stuff to read tonight, thanks for that man.
ive admittedly been working my way through classic retronauts stuff & may've missed segments, did you guys ever cover much on the Saturn?

The Saturn episode of Retronauts Volume 1 is one of the best podcasts FOR SURE they ever did. I believe it's Shane, Sharkey, Milky, Jeremy...and I believe Sam Kennedy and that might be it. But anyway it's like an instant classic.

Jeremy put episode 13 up early.

Retronauts Vol 3 Episode 13: The Golden Age of the Arcade

RETRONAUTS EPISODE 13 LOVES YOU, AND IT LOVES OLD ARCADE GAMES
Just a brief note here, since I’m on an island somewhere far away and time and bandwidth are limited for me at the moment. Retronauts Episode 13 is here! And it was recorded a long time ago! A few months ago, to be precise, back when I realized I needed to move across the country; we queued up a bunch of episodes all at once since I didn’t know when I’d be able to return to San Francisco to host episodes in person again. So… if it seems a little weird that we’re talking about things like Resogun in future tense, well, just consider this an episode of Retronauts that became “timeless” (read: dated) before it even debuted.

Arcade fanatic Sam Claiborn (of IGN fame) joins us again to discuss — what else? Arcade games. Specifically, we’re talking about the “golden age” of the arcades, with an emphasis on pre-Pac-Man works. It’s a long, rambling, digressive episode, which means it’s pretty much my personal platonic ideal for this podcast. It may not be particularly focused, but it’s a bunch of guys talking about old games they dig. Hopefully you will agree.

Music from this episode comes from Bucker & Garcia’s Pac-Man Fever, along with Yellow Magic Orchestra’s “Rydeen.”

So, am I the only one that still likes this podcast?

Retronauts Pocket 13 Takes the "Retro" Thing a Little Too Far

Apologies, citizens, as we appear to have taken our remit as “retronauts” a little too seriously this time around and set the Wayback Machine so far that we don’t even really talk about video games. Instead, in another “Retronauts roots” episode, we talk about the precursors of video games — the various electromechanical amusements that established arcades as an entity before the idea of using room-sized computers to control the movement of a dot around a tiny phosphor screen ever existed. Think of this as the Silmarillion to episode 13‘s Lord of the Rings.

As such, the conversation is a bit more dry than would be ideal. Whereas the previous episode featured us talking passionately and at length about things with which we had personal experience in our formative years, the concept of a pre-video arcade exists strictly in a museum sense for us. Because we’re not 60 years old, and therefore can’t speak about these things with the sort of intimate familiarity with which we went delved into classic video arcade games. Still, there’s some learnin’ to be had.

And my apologies if the theme sounds a little weird. I was trying to go for a cracklin’ 78rpm sound, as if “His Master’s Voice” was secretly playing Anamanaguchi, but I’m not sure it quite worked out. Oh well! Put on your carny jacket and bark at passersby as you listen to us poke and prod at video game prehistory.

Incidentally, this episode marks the halfway point of our Kickstarter-funded podcast journey. Crazy.

It’s the most retro Retronauts ever as we look at the roots of video games in the form of pre-video arcade games. Ski-ball! Kinetoscopes! Electromechanical target galleries! Even WE aren’t this old. Sam Claiborn joins Jeremy, Ray, and Bob.

I still enjoy the podcast, I just find it hard to comment ssometimes because I'm not a dinosaur like the hosts and some stuff is before my time or outside of my niche.

Still look forward to it every week.

Still a great show. I'll keep listening as long as they put 'em out!

I still listen to it, but at my own pace. In contrast to other podcasts, Retronauts topics aren't only relevant for the one week it goes online, so I don't feel pressed to listen to them as soon as they go online. Not a bad thing of course -- it's a good thing actually, since this means that their content will be just as enjoyable as today a few years down the road --, but it makes talking about the episodes a lot more difficult.

Yep. Completely true for me too. For example I just finished listening to the old arcade games episode Friday. Sometime Garnett Lee drives me crazy and I'm glad I have something else to which I can switch away.

Bombcast comes in on Tuesday and takes that day and Wednesday to finish. I drive an hour each way to work so I sometimes chew through my weekly content though and Retronauts is always right there to back me up.

Definitely still loving it. It's one of the only podcasts I have set to not auto-delete the previous week's episodes. I save all these until I've listened to them. Like others have said, because it's not tied to current events, I usually listen to them at a leisurely pace.

I'm the same as wrowa in that I tend to listen to Retronauts mostly when I'm out of podcasts that deal with more up-to-date stuff. Additionally, at least a few of the episodes over the last couple months have been about topics that don't particularly interest me, so I haven't felt the need to listen to those at all.

They need to bring back the old intro music :(

C'mon, man. They don't own it. Licenses expire. Whatchagonnado?

Really enjoyed hearing Mr. Bettenhausen on a podcast again. I keep the survival horror episode of old 1up Retronauts forever available for listening.

With love to all the others, my Retronauts dream team was always Parish, Sharkey, Barnholdt, Bettenhausen, Kohler. I don't think any other group could match that in terms of retro knowledge.

Oh god Shane talking about the "very scary, very retarded" bad guy from D2 (?) was a classic moment.

Yeah he's been away for a while so he doesn't know all the new PC and PR pitfalls.

Thing is, is the bad guy in D2, or for that matter Haunting Ground (I think he used the "R" word in that classic episode I mentioned) someone who deserves the sympathetic nomenclature of "developmentally disabled?" If we can't use the word even for bad guys, is it just completely retired from the lexicon?

I kid because I love...

Yup.

I still regularly listen to the older ones in my car and the new ones at work. Sometimes I don't get to a new one until a few are backlogged. I'm already going back and re-listening to several of the ones in the new series. I find myself not as into the pocket episodes...a few have been good, but mostly all of the full episodes have been excellent. I tend to like my Retronauts episodes really long. I do appreciate the pocket episodes and enjoy them, but they're over so quickly and not as good for repeat listens as a result.

Hope that didn't sound more negative than I intended! I'm not hating, just a personal opinion. Then again, if it were up to me the music episodes would be 10 hour epic events. I'm just being greedy.

Retronauts Volume 3 Episode 14: Harvest Moon

Hey gang — Bob here with a brand-new episode that might be slightly polarizing. Now, I don’t expect everyone to take an interest in the Harvest Moon series, but even if you don’t appreciate the somewhat repetitive mechanics, you can at least respect the fact that Harvest Moon as a whole still exists as an anomaly in the world of video games. Instead of shooting, punching, or slicing dudes, Yasuhiro Wada’s life sim gives players prosocial goals in an uber-friendly backdrop—and the series hasn’t veered from this intent nearly two decades after its birth. Joining us for this one is Adam Fitch, who donated generously to choose a topic and sit in as a guest host—and he’s the perfect guy for the job, considering the fact that he’s worked at Natsume (Harvest Moon’s publisher) for six years. That said, if I haven’t won you over with this preamble, please give this installment a try—as with Ray’s amazing wrestling episode, it could end up surprising you.

This episode’s description:

“For over 15 years, the Harvest Moon series has been teaching sickly indoor kids the virtues of tilling the land, petting the chickens, and having low-wage serfs do most of the dirty work. Join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Ray Barnholt, and special guest backer Adam Fitch as the Retronauts explore this prolific farming sim series, and maybe — just maybe — raise each other’s affection levels in the process.”

This episode’s musical breakdown:

21:24 – Harvest Moon “Spring” (Tsuyoshi Tanaka)
34:34 – Harvest Moon 64 “Fall” (Tsuyoshi Tanaka)
44:19 – Harvest Moon: Back to Nature “Summer” (Miyuki Homareda)
50:19 – Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland “Summer”
56:58 – Harvest Moon: Back to Nature “Winter” (Miyuki Homareda)
1:05:45 – Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life “Home Town Song”
1:16:41 – Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life “Adult Period”
1:35:52 – Harvest Moon: Back to Nature “Ending” (Miyuki Homareda)

So speaking of Harvest Moon, is either the GBC version or Legend of the River King GBC on the 3DS Virtual Console worth a shot? With Umihara Kawase seemingly delayed, I'm looking for something to play.

Super! I just finished the electro-mechanical episode last week.

I can't tell if this show was appealing to people who aren't already Harvest Moon fans (or lapsed fans like me) but I sure did rush to download and got some neat trivia out of it. I've had $8 of Wii shop money sitting there for years and years and one of these days I think I'll spend it on the first Harvest Moon, it's the only one in the series pre-DS that I never picked up.

I've only ever played the first Harvest Moon game, but this episode still really appealed to me.

Having one of the localizers there really changes the way that the episodes work. There is a lot more information and insider details that you would not get if it were just a regular guest.

I hope they can do this more in the future. I know Bob and Jeremy have friends at Atlus, so maybe someone from there could join in the future.

Harvest Moon GBC is ok, but I hate that on the 3DS we won't get the Super Nintendo version or FOMT because SNES and GBA games aren't on it thanks to Nintndo's "reasons". It also sucks that we'll never see 64 on the VC, because that and AWL are my favorites. FOMT is probably my third.

Maybe I'll try one of the 3DS ones.

Such, such a good episode of Retronauts. :)

Much like Ray, my first HM title was the Game Boy version (talk about bare bones!). I only played the original console installments and stopped at Save the Homeland (with a special exception for FoMT), so sadly I missed out on a ton. My backlog is ridiculous.

Rune Factory Frontier and RF 3 are incredible though.

Damn it made me happy they did this episode. Adam Fitch was a terrific contribution, too. :) The end song for BtN, too.... those feels......

Guest host was weak, at least in terms of group dynamics amongst the other podcasters, and Jeremy kept interrupting (I'm assuming Skype delay) but the HM episode was interesting.

Really? I felt he's been the best guest host in terms of how he contributed since... well, the show was revived.

Hey Jeremy, don't call it Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That's the George Lucas-y, E.T.-with-radios-instead-of-guns revisionist history name.

It's just "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Thank you. Another fine show, otherwise.

Never played any Harvest Moon despite starting to play video games since the eighties.
I guess I'm a bad person too, so to make it up to you, I will purchase the VC version of the very first Harvest Moon game and see how it turns out.

Anyway, I really liked the last episode. Everything was new to me and despite the guest was very hesitant when he was speaking (a lot of "um" and silence), it ended up being really good and I enjoyed it.

you should get the n64 one. i always thought it was the best and holds up very well imho

Played an absolute ton of harvest moon on SNES. One of my favorite memories of that system!

Never played another one in the series much, just found them too tedious. And the SNES one is a bit difficult to go back to honestly.

The Harvest Moon episode was the weakest of the new Retronauts season. I had to work to listen to it. The guest host seemed too laid back and Ben Stein like for a superfan (and localizer?!) and Bob tried real hard to add a little excitement. I feel Retronauts is there to get people who played the games a great experience reminiscing the games they played in the past as well as get people who never played the games featured excited enough to go out of their way to try to play the game. As a person of the latter I'm not inspired to go play my first Harvest Moon game.

Pick up the cart because it was pretty clear after this episode that we'll never see a VC release of it.

Harvest Moon discussion was my favourite episode yet (possibly because I adore the series) - had I paid enough to choose a topic, it would have been those games. ^_^

I just wish there had been a touch more discussion on the GBC titles, and perhaps a little more trivia (such as crops cut from release, intended features that never materialised in earlier titles - which was mentioned briefly, but examples would have been great).

Well done chaps, if any of you read this.
