RIP Duke Nukem Forever. 3D Realms to close

That story is a bit like DNF's development. Take way too long to read and in the end you find out you're being bullshitted.

Eeeeeeeeh that story seems.... very unlikely :lol

Yeah, but if we keep in mind that this is 3D Realms we are talking about it don't seem that implausible any more. It's like anything goes, if someone came out and said that they used to have Baby BBQs I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

The story is fiction, the guy is real, and that's really all I'm able to say about any of this for now.

Besides my commiserations to the now unemployed game developers - I hope you find another gig ASAP. There were some very talented people working on the game.

Rest in Peace Duke/3DRealms. Like others I would have bought the game day one even if it stunk purely on the basis that it's freaking Duke Nukem Forever in legitimate game copy form. Hopefully the poor, tormented staff can find jobs elsewhere. The last few bits of media we saw of it looked pretty good, so they must have been harboring some talent there.

This is so sad. It's like the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, Yeti, Bunyip, Mokele-Mbembe, Ropen, UFOs and Paranormal were all 100% disproved in one single boring press release and all mystical things in the world gone forever.

Hahaha, what a bunch of losers. The fact the game never made it out of the gates will be an all-time legend of videogaming. And if it did come out it would have been akin to a bunch of Doom level designers making a gears mod ie, shite.

Good work taking those paychecks though lads!

I don't agree with this. I think the biggest problem was bad management. The bad management won't go away just because you're getting outside funding and have to answer to people. It probably just means your project will get axed that much sooner because you're not meeting milestones.

Management is supposed to keep track of where the money is going and how much you have left, right?

The company I work at is pretty much selffunded and we set our own milestones which we reach because we want to continue to exist as a company. We would risk losing clients if we didn't release new or update content.
I work in a large corporation and worked on a single app (which is used by hundreds of people) for over a year. We needed the cooperation of another group in the company (the client) for testing because the development environment had a fatal error and the company wasn't paying to support it anymore. The other group was pretty slow helping us test and root out the final bugs... that is until the business side came in and gave them pressure. After that anything I asked for was done within minutes.

If business wasn't there to breathe down their necks, nothing would have ever gotten done.

DNF? Console Exclusive? Sure, any other Duke game, but DNF? Fans would riot :lol

At first, but then they would bend over and lap that shit up as always. Half of them would sell their mother for a new screenshot. The rest wouldn't settle for less than a new 12-second clip showing little-to-nothing.

Now there's nothing wrong with anticipating a game, I've done so myself of occasion, but to spend 13 years preaching that "It's not only coming out, it'll be the best shit ever" is what elevated them to the absolute pinnacle of mount pathetic. Hell, even if if DID come out and it WAS the best shit ever the 13+ year thing would cancel it out.

I'm not sure I'm ready for a world where DNF is not in perpetual development. It was like that one constant of the gaming industry that you could always count on. Companies rise and fall, new hardware comes and goes, franchise after franchise goes from inception to blockbuster, and DNF is always in "development."

It feels like part of me has died.

I feel kind of bad about the fact that all I can muster is a "Meh" and a "Fucking finally".

I worry about the guys that lose their job in this economy and with this stain on their resume.

The question now is: who will finish it? Cause you know someone is going to announce at E3 "We've been given the rights to Duke, expect more news in the coming months/YEARS."

From Geoff Keighley's Twitter:

To those asking, yeah, based on multiple sources I can confirm that Duke Nukem Forever has ceased development for now.

They should just release what they have. I'd pay $10 for it.

Rockstar!

Well my longest running bet ever ended this way. Well I won but I don't I'm really happy about it.

But let's be honest who didn't see this one coming? I don't know how 3D Realms was still in business.

Epic :P

Project to be headed by Cliffy B. and all the former 3dr employees :lol

Man this is just not right. DNF never coming out is part of my life maaaaaaaaan. It's like a bedrock of existence.

I'm confident that someone will pick this up, if it was due to be released this year, they should be relatively close the Alpha testing. I mean it would easily do a million plus, just on the strength of it being DNF.
