RIP Duke Nukem Forever. 3D Realms to close

How the fuck did they not complete the game after all these years? It's their own damn fault.

Their development process. It was a mixture of, as posted before in this thread, having self-funded development (entire levels being made to beta quality before the higher-ups even getting to see them), and probably the insistence of many of the head honchos (like Broussard) that the game be on the cutting edge.

Every time some new kind of innovation happened in game development, a new engine, a new whatever, they had to rework Duke to be even better. To them, DNF couldn't just be a good game or even a great game, it had to be a milestone game. I suspect that as the development time grew longer and longer, that became even more important. If you're going to make Duke Nukem Forever, releasing anything less than jaw-dropping amazing would be unthinkably shameful.

It's interesting reading about some of the names from the past. Does anyone remember reading .plan files? Ah those ole days before the blogs...

It's probably just bits of tech at this point, I doubt there's anything solid to pick up. Unless you go back to a very early build, and that would be just pointless.

The community should band together and make it a source mod. I bet source would be capable of doing a lot of stuff seen in the 2001 trailer.

Whether its true or not "The Chair" was quite a entertaining read.
Did anyone re-host any of the pictures he was posting? I want to see Kool Aid Cliffy.

As opposed to the situation we have now.

Bethesda will pick it up, and then everyone will wine about it just beeing Oblivion with guns.

You mean they'll say it's just Fallout 3 with INTERACTIVE STRIPPER DIALOG

What's the story tonight, baby?
Hey bitch, got any gum?
(Make lewdfull comment about face/ass)

if they need just $5.000.000 i think they will find some publisher who will pay this. just of this legendary development time will sell them 4+ million copys :lol

considering the fact that DNF was announced when i was in middle school, and i have since graduated college and the damn thing is still vaporware i`m actually excited, someone else will buy up the franchise and we will finally see DNF

maybe?

You forget they also need talent and the ability to write more than one line of code.

I think a lot of people overestimate the Duke franchise. It's not that big any more, and it's become much more of a joke than anything else. They squandered developing a game that is never going to come out.

Five dollars seems rather small, don't you think?

How cool would it be for that to leak out. That looks like something we could at least fuck around with.

By the way, what would be that state of the Duke Nukem license because of all this? Would the team be able to continue development under another pub? Would they be able to sell it to another team to develop? Or does Duke Nukem inevitably die along with this breakup?

...what? Last time I saw it, it was looking fairly far along. What a shame, hope it gets released in some form.

So what? We've been seeing bits of gameplay for ages now. There's no evidence of any actual game or central structure that these link up with.

That having been said, I'd love for a budget conscious (i.e. smart) developer like Rebellion to have a go at the last thirteen years' worth of assets in molding something worthwhile out of this mess.

The game was said to be almost done when it was still running on the Quake II engine.

Someone will at least pick up the rights to Duke Nukem since they still drop a lot of titles for this series. I would imagine sooner or later the new consoles will get something.

Lame. If it's not gonna be completed by 3D Realms then I don't care if Duke ever comes out anymore.

Least I had a great trip down memory lane when Duke 3D hit Live.

Just think:

Someone could have gone to college for 4 years, graduated then gotten about 6 or 7 years experience and still have been able to join the Duke team and finish the project.

Some of you Duke fans could have done that.

*boggles*

To reiterate a point made earlier:

This is the best thing to happen to our prospects of ever seeing this game released. This is probably the greatest amount progress on Duke Nukem Forever that has been made in the past 12 years.

I've waited half my life for this game!
Well, I haven't ever anticipated this game, but its been in development for half my life :lol

Old? New? Don't care:

UPDATE: Citing company policy, Take-Two vice president of communications and public affairs Alan Lewis declined to comment on reports of 3D Realms' closure directly. However, he did say the company "can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title. In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever." Lewis also confirmed the DNF IP is still owned by 3D Realms.

3D Realms' closure marks a cruelly ironic end to the Duke Nukem Forever saga. After being completely restarted from scratch using the Doom 3 engine, the shooter resurfaced in December 2007 in the form of a brief teaser trailer (above). After a quickly retracted Dallas Business Journal report said the game was coming to the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, several snippets were shown on the Web show of former Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment vice president (and now movie producer) Jason "Jace" Hall.

This year, work appeared to be progressing on Duke Nukem Forever. According to 3D Realms studio head George Broussard's Twitter feed, Take-Two was shown the project on January 26 or 27. He made no subsequent updates about the publisher's reaction to the game, the fate of which is now uncertain. As of press time, requests for comment sent to Broussard had not been answered.

Meh, granted I'm not a fan of the series but good riddance, I say... there's no explanation for why this game was still in development for 12 years. Give the IP to a competent developer, for the fans' sake.

Take notes and learn; 13 years to develop a game is just too damn long!

Sad news though :( I hope for someone to pick it up.

needs to be on the new page :lol

that is pretty much exactly how I felt when I heard 3DR was closing. It didn't feel like it would ever shut down.

It had become something bigger than just a studio. it had become like Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory, something surreal, surrounded in myth.

And now it's gone.

So, in a nutshell: 3d realms was overambitious for many years, now they are on track but ran out of money. Asks Take 2 to help them out, Take 2 denies them and they are finished. Who should i blame?
