It's sad but I'm not all bent out of shape like most people are. I didn't know the guy, he didn't know me. It sucks that hes dead and all, but he was just a muscian, not someone who truly changed the world. Just my opinion. Rest in peace mike.
I'm pretty sure you're wrong any way you look at it.

Well, I'm not the hugest MJ fan (not like some in this thread I suppose), and I said I think Lennon was bigger, but MJ did without a doubt change the world. How anyone can think differently is beyond me.

Oh, believe me. He changed the world.

Because he sold 750 million albums and donated to charity? Not in my opinion. He was an entertainer, not someone who was really important. Not to shit on the guy or anything as his music was good and his charitable contributions were great, but again, he was just a musician. He didn't cure cancer or do anything significant to advance the human cause.

You couldn't be more wrong...

Art alone changes the world.

He had as much to do with fighting AIDS as anyone in this country.

This thread is a testament to the fact that he did change the world in some way

So being one of the biggest/greatest ARTISTS ever doesn't advance humanity?

Seriously, this is awful news. Regardless of his various issues, Michael Jackson was undeniably talented and more than deserving of the epithet of "King of Pop." All the same, he was a tortured soul; I almost wonder if perhaps he is better off having been released from all of the pressure. ;_;

R.I.P. MJ

That's it? :lol

I've got a Zune Pass and just downloaded Thriller and Michael Jackson essentials. I would bet his estate is gonna make some unreal cash today off the music download services.

I think most people would disagree with this extremely shortsighted and immature take on the life of one of the planets most popular and talented entertainers.

how so? was it mean spirited, or just the kind of pop reference irony they do for everybody?

There were two main ones I remember.

That one where Bart sold his Soul to Milhouse, and basically said something to the effect of...

"Hell?! Pfft. That's just something adults make up to scare kids. Like the Boogeyman, or Michael Jackson!" - Bart to Milhouse

Then years later, for like the 300th ep (I believe)? They had an obvious parody of Homer dangling Baby Bart over the side of a balcony (and dropping him).

WTF? People are allowed to make fun of MJ, despite his immense talent and contributions to music there was plenty there to make fun of. That's especially true for a comedy show like the Simpsons.

Oh, I'm not disputing that "right" to parody or make fun of.

Just looking at the irony of it all. I mean, Bart goes from being the one who was hyping MJ over Springfield, and then shoots an off-hand "Boogeyman"-level joke, seasons later, keeping with the obvious change in tone of the times. It's both funny and sad, at the same time. ^^;

Dude, he changed the world... believe me... more than any politician...

God... I still can't believe it....

Man, what a day. :( :( :(

Also weird that I was playing some MJ songs on the jukebox at the bar last night with some friends. Such a great musician.

do you have any idea the emotional impact his songs have had over the years for people?

my parents first dance was to a michael jackson song. i would not be surprised if there were hundreds of thousands more people who have that same experience.

EDIT: oh wait, the rest of GAF already has this covered

Damn, this is just too much man. Watching all these videos and reminiscing. Thank you Michael from the bottom of my heart for the music you provided. Thank you and rest in peace, icon.

Just bought the essential Michael Jackson off itunes.

The cynic in me thinks about all the money record labels are making. The kid in me is thankful I can still listen to all the old tunes.

I couldn't help myself. Just glancing through some pages made me want to reach through the monitor and choke a few people. Even one of the mods pissed me off with a cheap, stupid pun even if he/she meant no harm. I'm glad most of the later pages are filled with nothing but love and admiration. He deserves to be remembered for what he accomplished and not what the media made him out to be. None of us have had our mistakes, personal faults and private life displayed all over national media for easy ridicule.

I just hate how easy it is for people to make fun of or judge other people whom they've never met or had any actual association with as if they are personally familiar on that individuals life. It is good to see that kind of nonsense has been nearly non existent in this topic.
