Rocket League on Switch Cross Platform with Xbox and PC. No PS4 Support

It's actually pretty smart for both MS and Nintendo to do this, it can basically nullify the userbase advantage of the market leader.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll get it as "people didn't buy because of no crossplay".

Guess what, the player pool between PC/Android/iOS/Xbox/Switch will totally dwarf the one on PS4 for Minecraft. Same for Rocket League. At some point, when everyone is doing it, you must do it too.

The trend is starting with these two games. If it continues and like you said everyone does it then they will probably cave in and do it as well.

How is it consistently bad PR when the main outrage comes from a niche enthusiast gaming forum?

I'm being legit. What bothers us doesn't always apply to the consumer base at large. PS4 is over 60 million sell through and isn't slowing down. This hasn't damaged them at all. IN fact they've grown PS+ subscriptions.

Venture to twitter. Make a hashtag. Tweet Sony execs and those in games media. Ask them to write stories about this.

This will be forgotten in a few days

Haha what, that would be even worse than just saying no. Source?

Source? Big if true.

Receipts? That'd be really shitty if true.

Sony's not stupid enough to talk about that publicly. They really don't want crossplay for some reason, but they don't want to say developers can't do it so they just make it a convoluted process that no one will want to deal with.

The funnier story is Sony offering Psyonix a way to get around the PSN account linking by paying them 7 figures to make up for the PS+ fees they would lose with crossplay support.

Sony will have their reason I guess for saying no to these types of things but it looks bad. If Nintendo says yes and Microsoft says yes then......I guess selling so many PS4's they think 'we don't need this as we have enough players already'??? It just looks bad and I don't personally care about multiplayer anything but it looks shitty.

allowing crossplay to begin with is the first step. if everybody is on board this gen, then next gen it will probably be made easier to coordinate with your friends on other platforms.

I doubt the coordination, where I'll be able to send an invite to an Xbox player from my PS4, will ever ever happen. There's no baby step towards that.

Nintendo is still rocking friend codes and is running laps around Sony.
Let that sink in.

If games use a system similar to SF5 it shouldn't be an issue.

The difference is last time it was microsoft's word vs sony's...now we have proof sony has been the company blocking crossplay

ok and?

Is there going to be some magic uproar now?

Like I said. People here need to take action. It's ok to voice your displeasure here, but will it be this way every single time when most gamers at large probably aren't bothered by it.

Want something to change. Take action.

Unless some place like Kotaku writes and article. No one outside of here will notice and it won't even be a thing after today.

Rocket League has sold 10m worldwide, and around 6m of those sales come from Steam. The other 4m is split between PS4 and Xbox. They definitely don't have a larger user base than Steam.

Steam numbers have free weekend

Good on Nintendo for making it cross play

I'm loving the way this is going. Online play should have always been global, how amazing would it be to have the entire world playing in the same pool of gamers. Especially for competitive play, and for keeping smaller game's online communities afloat.

I hope this keeps up, and forces Sony's hand. Good job MS and Nintendo.

As a multiplatform owner, I pretty much won't consider buying any multiplayer titles on PS4 with these decisions.

Good job Sony.

What? Cross-platform play means that if I want to play Minecraft or Rocket League (or potentially any other game, if this becomes the expected standard) with Sony friends, I don't have to buy a PS4. Meaning a lost sale for Sony.

who the hell determines a platform they want to purchase based on a DIFFERENT community than the one they want to purchase?

"hm yeah I really want an xbone x, and what's most important to me is playing games online with my friends on xbox! i can do that with xbone x of course, but i'll get a switch instead simply because I can still do that"

The ball is SOOOO on fucking Sony's court it's not even worth defending. And yet, there will be people bringing up the Xbox 360, the playstation 4 being the sales leader, PSN infrastructure, etc.

Don't bury the lead here by focusing on Sony's stubbornness: This is excellent for Nintendo Switch users. Switch will definitely have a smaller player base than Xbox and PC, and so opening this up for the Switch means that they'll instantly have a large player base for games.

I have Rocket League for Xbox One, and I rarely do cross-platform play... Usually only by accident because the player base is large on X1. For anybody who regularly uses it, it's basically only for random player matches, right... there's no way to really tie the player bases together (e.g., I couldn't invite a friend from Steam to play in my group right?), and there's obviously no cross-platform chat, right?

Come on now Sony :/ I really hope Nintendo being cool about this pushes them to open up, I don't particularly care about cross play in Rocket League or Minecraft but this would dramatically improve the chance of stuff like cross play Destiny 2 happening and that would be fucking amazing.

i feel like sony had a better team in 2013 that was extremely pro consumer. it's weird that they made a total 180 in a lot of fields.

Let's not get carried away. They are still very Pro consumer. No one agrees with every decision a company makes.

Perhaps we could put polite pressure on Sony to answer the question of why. We have enough game journalist around.

I feel like I've been a free loader cos I had the PS4 ps+ version and haven't bought DLC but pumped hundreds of hours into this game. Psyonix, you're gonna get my cash with this, thank you.

Both should ideally be an option. I can buy Gears Ultimate Edition, or I can just play my 360 copy of Gears 1. Not everyone wants to spend $40 again to play the same game on the third platform in the same ecosystem.

But being able to play an updated version of it, including the fact that for a first time play never being able to play it on the previous system isn't bad either. No one has ever complained about getting a remaster of a game especially when it's improved and it seems like a moot point now. Money has never been an issue either so I'm not sure why you are being that up. If you didn't own the 360 version of gears, you aren't likely to just buy it anyways.

it's a fight to even attempt to get a refund on a Sony system. They've been dragging their feet for a while now.
