Rocksteady: Arkham City is single player only

Does that rumor comes from talk or just the usage of
The Penquin's club
in the screen shots.
I just updated the list a bit, but yes, that's the source of the rumored one plus Keighley.

edit: ^^though i wish you didn't make all your characters so ugly.

What the fuck are you talking about? Those characters look good.

Batman is dark as fuck. If you're expecting him to battle pretty pink ponies, you're gonna be disappointed, dude.

Is this meme bannable?

Props for not RE5-ing it.
I don't think most people thought they were going to force co-op upon people. Rather I think most people thought it was likely their would be some optional co-op challenge rooms with Batman teaming up with either Catwoman or Nightwing.

And now that we've received confirmation that there's no such thing, I can see how some might be disappointed. The challenge rooms were a lot of fun in the original Arkham Asylum and I could see the appeal of going through some extra challenging ones with a buddy.

But as I said, I'm totally cool with this; I love me some tightly-focused single player experiences. Good on Rocksteady for not conforming to the new industry standard.

yeah but the character models don't scream "DARK AS FUCK" to me, they just scream... ugly. maybe i'll get used to 'em.

While I agree with everyone that the campaign should only be single player, I would have loved a multiplayer challenge mode. It still might have multiplayer, actually, based on his wording. Just not in the story mode.

Fantastic news, SP for life.

Have really hated this 'tack on a mp component' trend.

Will be interesting to see what the gaming press say though.

Now this attitude I don't really understand.

Do you automatically assume that a game's single player is going to be garbage if they also take some time to add a multiplayer mode? Do you not trust the developers and their ability to split resources at all?

Or maybe he wants a singleplayer only game instead of a mix of the two? There has been a disturbing lack of good singleplayer-only games this generation. Same for multiplayer only. They devote resources to both and while that's fine... neither experience stands out.

To be fair. Assassin's Creed and Uncharted's multiplayer was actually good. Thing is, Naughty Dog and Ubisoft are bigger than Rocksteady and I'd imagine they have much bigger budgets. Rocksteady knew to make this everything it could be they couldn't afford to waste time/talent on a multiplayer. I bet they played around with the idea and even had something running, but to get a decent multiplayer going takes time and money. Warner are not super power publisher like Ubisoft, SCE, EA or Activision.

Instant -10 on Metacritic.

I really hope not, but I'm sure we'll see some reviewers whining. Still boggles me there were some complaining that Bioshock didn't have multiplayer. We saw how that worked out.

I hope they fix the Batman design.

I never liked his design in AA, his chest is waayyyy too big

Well, i like it but for the sequel i wanted a new Batman outfit, and not the same as in AA.

No, I just have absolutely zero interest in playing any multiplayer whatsoever in this game. It pleases me to know they won't waste a single minute on something I don't care about.

There have been plenty of examples where a developer takes a strong single player experience, adds multiplayer for the sequel and *gasp* creates a game that has both a great single player and a fun multiplayer.

There have been plenty of examples where a sequel's multiplayer is "not horrible," but I can't think of many that were actually worth playing. Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow comes to mind, but that's about it.

From the way people are talking here having an option on the main menu marked "Multiplayer" will automatically make the game worse in their eyes. That just doesn't make sense to me. I think Rocksteady has shown that they can make a great game, and if they had decided that they could keep up the quality while adding a multiplayer mode I'd totally trust them.

Having no multiplayer doesn't automatically make the single player mode ten points better.

And there have been plenty of games this generation that had what a lot of people considered unnecessary multiplayer modes that were still fantastic and complete single player experiences. Just look at Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and Red Dead Redemption for just a few examples.

Thank you, Rocksteady! Fucking sick of half-assed MP modes being thrown into games where they extra development time could/should have gone to the overall game itself. Glad to see a developer standing up for what it knows and does right.

ok, i will rent your game rocksteady. i like this.

I was renting either way but this does make the decision easier. I can't imagine a multiplayer mode interesting enough to warrant a full purchase.

I don't understand the idocy of cheering a lack of a feature. Dead Space 2 has a universally panned multiplayer but it didn't hurt the single player campaign at all.

I for one am disappointed there is no co-op mode Batman has a long legacy of using partners. Wheather it's one of the 4 Robins Nightwing, Batgirl or something. Hell it doesn't even have to be in the campaign co-op challenge rooms would have been great.

You guys cheering that there is no co-op is ridiculous if you don't want it don't play it.

But... it would've been so perfect.

Player 1: Batman
Player 2: Robin
Player 3: Nightwing
Player 4: Arbiter

Actually, I did expect something co-op related involving Batman and Catwoman, given the early shots and promo art, but a highly polished single-player experience sounds ideal to me.

It's a missed opprutunity for sure. Maybe they will add a co-op mode in dlc.

This makes me quite happy.

Now I'm not saying multiplayer would have hurt the single player (titles like Uncharted, and I'm certain the upcoming Portal 2 are evidence), but well... Okay, I really can't make an argument here.

Yeah co-op with say a player being Batman and the other being Robin would have been great, there are certain games made for co-op with this and Killzone 3 coming to mind. I'm one of those people that cannot justify buying a SP game simply because once it's been played the game just collects dust on a shelf. Find it stupid that people on Gaf assume that if MP is added the SP will suffer, I cannot think of any games of note which suffered from that. Uncharted 2 for example, added MP but that had absolutely no effect on the quality of SP.

Selective memory may be at work here but what game can people think of where MP was added and SP really suffered?

Some of my better MP memories are from games whose series started out as SP only or were at least heavily focused on SP. Even CoD and Halo started out SP focused.

Condemned 2, off the top of my head.

How do you know that? Because it was good? That's not evidence the MP didn't hurt the SP at all. You don't have a bizarro world version of DS2 that is SP only for comparison.

HEy ..I still haven't played the first Batman game yet. Found it very cheap in here. Is it really that good? Usually i am not into super hero stuff. But if you have to name a similar game like that what would it be? It is not just a brawler and an action game right? More like a Splinter Cell ?

Am I the only one who differentiates between co-op and multiplayer?

I am playing it now and yes, it is really, really that good. Brawling is just a part, there is exploration, platforming, etc., and all sorts of different environments and scenarios and gadgets. I highly recommend it.

No it doesn't, but it does takes away people who could have been working on the single player. They potentially could have improved it, even maybe a little bit. It's really difficult to say since I think even with game development, there are diminishing returns. There could also be the issue of too many hands in the pot. Not all companies like Naughty Dog will hire new people just to add a new feature.

And there have been plenty of games this generation that had what a lot of people considered unnecessary multiplayer modes that were still fantastic and complete single player experiences. Just look at Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and Red Dead Redemption for just a few examples.

For every success there are as many or more underwhelming experiences: Metal Gear Solid 4, Bioshock 2 and Dead Space 2. I don't think Uncharted 2 is entirely a success; it seemed to get less buzz then Brotherhood or Red Dead. I certainly did not buy Uncharted 2 for the multiplayer.

Player 1: Regular-ass Batman
Player 2: Russian Martian Batman
Player 3: Green Lantern Batman
Player 4: Nightwing

Fixed fixed.

It's a wonderful jar of potpourri, all wrapped up in a Metroidvania box. Even if I didn't like the characters or the universe, it'd still be a fantastic game.
