She looks absolutely amazing imo. Really impressed with her moveset and visually she looks beautiful. Couldn't be happier with this reveal. Now here's hoping we get Zelda reveal for the Japanese Zelda release this month, to keep the hype going.
Pure competence or ability doesn't define a Mary Sue character. Otherwise, Mewtwo would be a Mary Sue. The term was invented to describe bad fanfic original characters (Like Mary Sue Picard) and how they were perfect little angels who outperform and earn the adoration of the original cast. They are often author avatars or waifus.

What makes them so similar?They do look pretty similar.
The average smash fan is probably just going to refer to her as the blue peach or blue princess.
The only thing similar is the crown and the four spikes in the hair and their skin color is slightly different.
In the silhouette the dresses are completely different style.
Rosolina has a sleek dress, where it gets big around her wrists while Peach has a puffy looking dress.
Rosolina hair is thinner while Peach's hair is bigger.
That's just from the silhouettes because they have completely different color schemes, let's not forget that Rosaline is bigger than Peach also.

also i never really thought about the concept of "gods/goddesses as mary sues" but pondering that idea in the context of ancient mythology is pretty funny

Rosalina and Luma look amazing, love their gameplay style. This is why characters deserve their own spots, instead being regulated to palette swaps.
I'm a bit worried about Palutena now though. They might not want to have two new goddessesque characters.

You might also consider the possibility that K. Rool is not, in fact, an iconic villain.
I fully expect the final roster to be larger than Brawl. The bulk of the work on pre-existing characters is already done and Sakurai is determined to bring back as many characters as possible, in addition to the new ones. On the whole, I expect an increase in the final character count.

Nice addition to the Smash cast, especially since it needs more females. I've always liked her design, too. I disagree that she's interesting or is a fun character, since the only Mario characters with any sort of personality are Luigi, Wario, and Bowser (and most of that is from spin-off series).
Sakurai got us with that fake out trailer, though.
I'd love to see Daisy packing athletic moves to differentiate her from the other two. It'd be really easy to do, since as you said she's the tomboy of the trio.

Palutena stands out from Rosalina way more than Rosalina stands out from Peach. She would also be a green-haired female (rather than yet another blonde), she would fight with a staff and shield, and she would have the distinction of being 1) the namesake of the last game Sakurai worked on (in Japan, Palutena is right in the title) and 2) a character from that game just as important as Pit.

I never understood the point of that silhouette comparison. It's especially obvious when you put Daisy beside Peach that Rosalina's silhouette stands out quite a bit from Peach's. She wears a dress, but the style of the dress is completely different. And, like we can see now, her moveset is completely different in every way. I really don't think we'll get people mixing up both characters.
She was pretty much completely ignored by the NSMB series, and also was absent from various Mario spin offs. EAD Tokyo obviously liked her though, and the Kart team added her to the series as soon as they could, but for quite a while it seemed like most of Nintendo was just ignoring her.

I think the surprise over Rosalina stems more from the fact that the selection of Mario representatives already felt plenty complete, with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser, and once you count the extended Mario series, you have Yoshi, DK and Wario.
I'm happy with her inclusion, though, and I'm more curious than ever what other newcomers might be in store. I fully expect three of them will be Little Mac, Mii and Pac-Man, given the uncanny timing of that one rumor. And I anticipate there will be more.

Also Rosalina doesn't really seem to use spells much aside from those used to control Luma and some of her normals, whereas I would imagine Palutena's moveset would have a strong focus on use of magic and spells. I don't really think this announcement shifted Palutena's odds one way or another.

Exactly. Colour scheme and clothing are two of the biggest parts of visual character design, you can't just ignore them.
Daisy really does look like a reskinned Peach, whereas Rosalina's outline is completely unique. Add in the fact that she's a different size and typically a much heavier weight class and I don't see the issue at all, she's a great addition.
He's still probably the most well known Nintendo villain after Bowser and Ganondorf. The Donkey Kong Country trilogy has been released countless times and always sells well, especially the first game.
I think Palutena has a pretty good chance, since Sakurai likes to add stuff from his own games. She's the most iconic character from his most recent game except for Pit who's already in, so the only thing that would keep her out is if there was a problem coming up with a moveset for her, which seems pretty heavily unlikely.
The one I'm worried about getting shafted again is Dixie Kong.

That would bring the newcomers up to:
1. Animal Crossing Villager
2. Wii Fit Trainer
3. Mega Man
4. Rosalina and Luma
5. Little Mac
6. Mii
7. Pac-Man
That's already a pretty good list for newcomers, but I'd still like to see Takamaru, King K. Rool, maybe Palutena, return of Mewtwo and Roy, alt costumes for most everyone, and that's pretty much it.
Palutena is different enough to justify inclusion imo.
It helps that she's my most wanted character too.
They're similar enough to where I thought the reveal at the end of SMG would be that Rosalina was Peach.

Not saying this is you, but this reads like because there are two of them they are similar. None of the attacks shown look anything like the IC move set.
Maybe IC wasn't the best comparison, I think they do play like Carl/Ada from Blazblue but that's just me.
Yeah, maybe them counting as two has got me a bit paranoid.
I'm sure you'll get a new DK rep, but it will be Dixie Kong. I'm fairly certain people data-mined Brawl and found evidence that Dixie had been in development at one point. Perhaps Sakurai will revisit some of those scrapped ideas and make them whole. And then there's the fact Dixie is current thanks to Tropical Freeze. If I were a betting man, I'd say she'll be unveiled around that game's launch.

Sakurai is so adept at crafting these movesets while maintaining the feel and look of each character. Rosalina is a very welcome addition to Smash and the Nintendo family.
Now bring on Palutena.

I know you're joking but is it really that hard to make the title "New Smash Bros. characters revealed! (12/18)"? That way people who don't want to see the info can avoid the topic and the people who wanted to know would click the thread anyway. It's a win/win.

DKC is a great series but I don't think K Rool is that good of a character (the boss battles themselves were great though).

And the ice climbers are....? The game needs more villains for the characters to battle. Bowser, Eggman, K Rool, Dr. Wiley(eggmsn reskin), gray wolf, Gannon, all series represented should have a villain for the heroes to beat up too.
I'd rather have more than another princess...although I actually like her.

well, i'm not completely opposed to having him, but if it came to him over Rosalina, screw him.
and Rosalina is not actually a princess since she doesn't rule any kingdom, unless the whole galaxy counts as a kingdom.

She was a princess (presumably of the Mushroom Kingdom, due to the location where she found the Luma) before leaving to space.
But does she use them? Does she forcibly ram them deep into my gut, rupturing my vital organs? Cause Captain Falcon does.
