I'd love one of those......

It was a game that Retro was working on before Nintendo came in and cancelled it. This was before Metroid Prime 1 was made.

One of Retro's many pre-Prime cancelled projects, an action RPG for Gamecube. It was their last cancelled title.

Other canned Retro titles included -

Retro NFL Football (Some team members wanted to turn this into Mario Kick-Off Football)

Action Adventure - a scifi action adventure game with three female leads.

Combat Car / Thunder Rally - a Twisted Metal style game

Here's a good history of Retro pre-Prime:

oh lawdy, I'd be ok if retro was given another shot at it again
I'm sure the tech in the wii u can do it more justice and the new retro team definitely has a better grasp with their art designs

Were they downsized at one point? It seems like they're able to make only one game at time. I mean, they have developed nine games since 2002. They're a good studio, but they are not N64 era Rare.

Well one thing to remember is that games nowadays require a lot more manpower than they did even during the early Gamecube years. Also the reason why they had so many games at once in development and then most of them get cancelled was due to the staff being stretched too thin. When they all got together and put all their eggs into the Prime basket, they made gold.

From what I've heard, Retro's overall process is just a never-ending cycle of polish, polish, POLISH. Review what they are doing and scrutinize the shit out of it until it is perfect. Hence why a "simple" game like DKC:TF can appear to be just another 2D platformer on the surface, but then end up with an immense amount of work that was clearly crafted into it. Every level is completely different than the one that came before it, and every single placement of an object or enemy is deliberate.

Downsized to an extent, but Nintendo decided Metroid Prime was top priority so they moved a lot of the staff for those projects over to it as development progressed. In fact Metroid Prime was the last of their early the projects to begin development, so basically the entire team was poached from those projects.

Also, you're right, they're not N64-era Rare. They're actually like, good. And their games age, ya know, well. :P

1. Game development on current generation consoles trumps the meager development teams back during the Nintendo 64 era.

2. Publishers have become much more conservative about high budget projects and what games they publish.

3. Rare and Retro released the same amount of GameCube games in the same period of time. ;) (2001-2003)

Yeah, it always feels wrong when people say Retro is the new Rare. Retro makes like two games a generation, but Rare made 11 games on the N64. Even since 2002, Rare still made more console games than Retro. Retro makes good games, but their output is nowhere near Rare's, even these days.

Shikamaru, do you have any guesses as to what Retro may be working on?

Just to be clear, I'm not bashing Retro. They're a great studio and they make great games. Sometimes people say they're Nintendo's new Rare, and I don't see it. It's not a bad thing even, and given where the two studios are now I would take Retro over Rare. I was curious about the downsizing, thanks for the replies!

Shikamaru you should leak something:P

According to Wikipedia, Retro Studios initially only had 4 members by the end of 1998 when Nintendo took interest in the new studio, but the dev team increased to 25 by early 1999. It began working on 4 GameCube projects despite not having a GameCube dev kit in their possession at the time. The staff size increased to 120 members before development on the projects began and eventually reached over 200 staff members. Nintendo eventually realized how chaotic Retro's development environment was with so many staff and 4 projects not being behind schedule. After Metroid Prime began development in 2000 due to Miyamoto's suggestion to use Retro's new game engine for it, Retro's other projects eventually got cancelled with two games being shut down and about 20 staff members laid off in February 2001. After E3 2002, another project, Raven Blade, was ultimately cancelled in July, with around 26 staff members laid off. By May 2002, Nintendo turned Retro Studios into an official 1st party developer.

Was it the case with 3 Metroid Prime in a row?

Yes. 3 didn't need to happen. They were stretching for things to keep the games fresh, and for the most part those ruined the Metroidyness of the game.

I'm fine with it existing because it's a good game, but they could have done something else.

Kind of, yeah. I loved Prime 3. It was a great game, but it was steering away from what makes a great Metroid game. Franchise fatigue seemed to set in for the developers as well as consumers. Was a good time for them to get off the series and do something different. Now that they've been away from it for a while I think they could do right again for the series.

So uh what was that tease???

Is it something that will be shown off in a treehouse or did they have to cancel last minute? What happened?

I loved the game they showed! Or maybe, as usual, we just assumed too damn much and maybe they were just digging E3 like everyone else.

Still, even under Microsoft's wings, they (Rare) managed to produce more games than Retro since the split with Nintendo.
