RUMOR: PS4 emulation of PS1/2 games.

I am serious. How much anyone here played PS2/PS1 games in early PS3 models?

And what would be more replayable now, GTA San Andreas or Mario Galaxy HD?

I still have my 60GB PlayStation 3 from 2007.

I replay multiple PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games on it a year.

I'm in the minority, of course, but I love backward compatibility.

I'm actually re visiting Bushido Blade 2 on my PS3 right now. To be fair I first put it in to see if it was actually true the PS3 would play PS1 games (I only recently learned this) and then got re addicted to it.

(on a side note I really wish they would put out a new Bushido Blade for current gen consoles. It was a good game and one of the more unique fighters out there).

I played through all of Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile 2, Threads of Fate, and the Persona games on my BC PS3. What the hell are you talking about?

Like, sure, maybe GTA hasn't aged so well. Good thing there are hundreds of other PS1 and PS2 games.

I praise the sun for a proper hardware accelerated emulation solution that makes the games run at 1080p

I love pcsx2 and all that, but an official emulator on ps4 could be amazing.

The select titles its worrisome though, please don't fuck this up.

Ridge Racer V would be perfect to start off PS4 emulation of PS2 games and to show off the capability.
This. PS4 Needs a RR game and R5 in 1080p would look better than any game in the series.

Let me get this straight. If this comes to pass, does this mean we can play the superior physics in SoTC that has been borked in the HD collection?

And...

and....

and...

The Silent Hill TRUE collection from 1 - 4 in it's original form ENHANCED with 1080p which will lead the us to salvation from the false prophet [Hulett] who has led astray?

Can't wait to play Charlies Angels on my ps4. But srsly I thought PSNow was suppose to be released already? I'm excited but I want more news!

I play ps2 and ps1 games in my launch 20gb all the time. I don't know why you would compare Mario Galaxy and GTA.

I never bought a PS3 specifically because they removed backwards compatibility. Eventually my parents got a new blu-ray player and gave me their slim PS3. On that system I play PS1 classics and PS2 HD ports as much as, if not more than, my true PS3 games. In my own experience, the appeal of a good game doesn't lessen with time. Additionally, I would enjoy playing Mario Sunshine HD more than Galaxy HD, because I prefer the traditional controls.

I think 360 having limited BC was worse in a way because you'd think of a game and be like AW SWEET then check the wiki list and no compatibility...

Just because you wouldn't apparently doesn't mean others would.

I'm not sure why people keep mentioning discs or gtfo etc. It is quite obvious discs will not be supported and all titles will be digital download unless using the PS stream thing.

majority of people have probably got rid of their old consoles or/and games for said consoles. If you still have discs, more than likely you will have the console too, so if you're desperate to play them, use your old console and stop bitching like its a bad idea, at least they are offering the service.

You know what would be ridiculously swag and never would happen? If they added trophies to PS1/PS2 games along with the ability for your friends to see you playing them...

If I can play the Mass Effect Trilogy on my Vita...

What are you talking about lol

I'm not sure why people keep insisting that it is obvious Sony won't support discs. What are you basing that on? Is there some precedent that you can cite? They still support PS1 discs on PS3, so why wouldn't they do that on PS4?

I'd love for this rumor to be true. I have a nice library of unfinished PS2 titles I'd love to visit on my PS4. I have a backwards compatible PS3, but I hate to use it, because it's old, and I don't want to burn it out!

Please be true.

Oh god please yes yes yes. Sooooo many PS2 games I haven't been able to play in so, so long. Super shitty internet connection that has made me hate streaming with a passion, I never for one second thought Playstation Now would be even slightly viable for me. Please, for fuck's sake, please be true... I beg of thee.

Please quit it. I replay PS1 games like Suikoden and Xenogears all the time. BTW, why is Mario Galaxy given an HD designation and San Andreas isn't?

just to get everybody's boners going... here's some screenshots I took the other night of PS1 games running in 1080p on the PCSXR emulator, widescreen hack enabled.

Okay see now I don't believe it's happening at all anymore. Pie in the Sky.

If I'm wrong about this, it would be glorious.

What I suspect it means is that you'll see the same resolution that the game shipped with, but the PS4 will upscale the signal before it goes to your display, rather than sending the native signal and letting your TV do the scaling. Very marginal difference in what you see on screen either way.

This is obviosuly not what the rumour is about, or it wouldn't be "for select titles" (nor would it be called "native 1080p rendering").

I could play this quality of PSOne games for the rest of my life.

Amazing, simply amazing.

Care to do Gran Turismo 1/Gran Turismo 2 if you have them? Front Mission 3? Colony Wars?

Thanks in advance!

At work now but I have the entire library on my HTPC. I'll get some more grabs tonight. Unfortunately, on a few games with high polygon counts (including grand turismo 2) there is a ton of pop-in when rendering the stuff that's outside the normal 4:3 frame. Maybe Sony's emulators will be better.

I also assume that this is for PSN content only, not disks.

That's disappointing, but I have quite a few PS2 classics on my PS3, that I'd love to play rendered at 1080p on my PS4, with that awesome Dual Shock (like Odin Sphere, Persona 3, Bully, etc). I'm still very excited for this.

Now just give me a way to play the Team ICO Collection, The Last of Us and LittleBigPlanet(s) on my PS4 so that a) it'll finally be worth a shit and b) I can sell my PS3.

So long as I can eventually play Shadow of Rome, SoulCalibur III, and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, I'll be happy.

They had finally gotten the PS2 BC working perfectly in a firmware update and I was finally able to really enjoy playing PS2 games on my HDTV, when my launch PS3 bricked. And I've never forgiven Sony for yanking PS2 BC out of all PS3s since. Lousy bastards.

And yes I do play PS1 games on PS3 relatively consistently. Not all the time, but often enough that I'd be pissed if that went away as well.

There are reasonable business models that can supports discs and remain consumer-friendly. I would consider paying a price for the disc-based emulator software package.

I would even consider paying nominal fees on a per-title basis for upgraded sets of features like 1080p/widescreen and share button support.

You keep this digital and all you are is thinking small. Why not monetize all those "owned" games out there and turn this adversity into an advantage?

People want it for discs because the original console that played them is old, no longer in production, and might break at some point in the near future, so being able to play them in a newer machine extends the playable life of the games. Which is kind of, you know, the entire reason BC exists in the first place.

And to add on, it is also because we have the discs and we don't want to have to pay again for the game when we already have it. And we'd like to play most our games on the newer console as that means less having to switch around settings on tv and speakers and the newer console has better features (like being able to suspend the game rather than quit it to use something else).
