... Wait, what? You'd buy the $399 console not to play inFamous, Uncharted, The Order, Destiny, etc, but to play 10-20 year old games readily available on other consoles?

How am I supposed to know the PS3 failure rate of a particular model? You're acting like I'm refusing to accept an argument that hadn't been presented.
I'm honestly surprised at the number of people who still have PS2 and PS1 discs they want to play, yet don't have the backwards compatibility versions of PS3. It seems like that would have been a pretty quick pickup at the time.

Hardly.
This emulation is going to cover PS1 and PS2 games, if it happens at all.
PS Now can cover PS1, 2, 3 games and can be played on PS3, PS4, PS Vita and eventually any Tablet or connected TV in the world.
Some people won;t buy a console, they'll just buy a PS Now subscription and enjoy a huge library of games anywhere and on nearly any device.
The PS4 emulating PS1 and 2 games really does NOT nullify PS Now.
No it doesn't, not even in the slightest - PS Now was always primarily for PS3 titles, ever since Sony originally bought Gaikai and announced their early intentions. Having PS1 and PS2 titles emulated directly on the console from either download or disc-based is a good idea, and even if you have to buy the emulator itself, I'd pay NZ$10-20 for it.
This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.
Really? I didn't read through the topic, just looked at the tweet. Did Sony confirm this yet? I would love this if it were true, I'd buy a PS4 immediately.
I am serious. How much anyone here played PS2/PS1 games in early PS3 models?

Before I switched from my launch 60Gb to a slim, I used to play PS1/2 games extensively. Especially in the first year or two of owning a PS3.
Good games are good games. And the PS3 did an awesome job of upscaling the older games. Far better than hooking up the original consoles to an HDTV. Many PS2 games run at funky resolutions which the in-built scalers on HDTVs struggle with, resulting in horrible image quality.
I still play my digital PS1 games all the time, on both my PS3 and Vita.
have always been under the impression that the system doesn't read CDs though so that cuts out PS1 games and some PS2 games.
It is a very small niche market. PS1/PS2 games has few save points, longer grinding parts and dont look good even with upscaling games. People today are not going to play.
Most of GameCube/Wii games, on other side, look great with upscale, are fun forever and you can play in short breaks.

There was a Eurogamer article a few weeks back making the same claim based on a Sony insider working on PSNow. This is basically another source making the same claim. People are getting their hopes up because it seems like multiple unrelated sources are in agreement. However, we don't know if there is ultimately any more than the one source, so others are still skeptical. And many people are just dismissing it outright because they aren't reading.

Few save points and longer grinding points? What games are you thinking of exactly? I see games like Spyro, Crash, God of War, Sly, etc. having the same potential for short burst playing as Super Mario Galaxy and Wind Waker... As for whole upscalability factor, many of Sony's HD re-release games like God of War, Ico, etc. look fantastic. Are you talking out of your butt or is there something that I am just completely missing? It is a very small niche market. No it doesn't. This doesn't play PS3 games. Interest in PS2 games is fairly low in comparison, and there aren't any major retailers that even sell new PS2 games anymore. the closest you get are third party resellers on amazon and ebay.
There will be a small number of hardcore PS2 fans that still have extensive disc collections, and everyone else will be buying new copies (or renting them) digitally, which still helps sony.
Torgo from PS Nation mentioned it on his podcast weeks before the Eurogamer article. Granted, he could have the same source as Eurogamer, but it's a bit unlikely since I don't think he has as many European contacts (Stewart Gilray aside, lol).
The 60 gb ps3 was always very expensive. I have a 20 gig model but most PS3s aren't BC.I'm honestly surprised at the number of people who still have PS2 and PS1 discs they want to play, yet don't have the backwards compatibility versions of PS3. T___T I lost most of my ps2 discs T_____T I miss Kessen (many others as well), do you guys know if Kessen will be back? loved that game.
This is an awesome rumor. Hope it turns out to be true.
... not a rumor...
PS1? Sure. PS2? Nope, it isn't. Especially with the crappy CPU it has.
Still can't believe Rez HD is still XBLA exclusive...
will definitely not include playing discs. Pretty obvious it's just an extension of the existing PSN based system.
PS2 emulation has been known to be CPU bound. You ain't getting all the PS2 games at 1080p without several glitches and bad framerates happening on PS4. There's a reason it's "select titles" and not everything.
Awesome. Did he indicate anything regarding disc-based support?
What makes it so obvious?
If disc based, megaton. If PSN... Well duh.
Yoshida said before ps4 launch they were looking into software emulation for ps1-2.Didn't they say at first that psn was not possible or even disk if i recall.
That's just a limitation with the current firmware, not a technical limitation of the console / optical drive.
Sony have confirmed CD playback in coming in a future update.
Do we know for sure that the PS4 could be able to play CDs with a firmware update?
Yoshida said before ps4 launch they were looking into software emulation for ps1-2.
Also there is zero reason not to have it when PS3 does (and Vita with ps1) it was only a matter of time. The real question is if they would go so far as to allow disc based emulation.
I don't see why not.oh yea i think it was for psn ps3 titles., So in theory if this happens we will be able to use our ps1 classics that we bought on ps3 store on PS4?
I don't think this is for disks.
This pretty much kills all the hype. I don't care to pay again for games I already own.
I though that this would have been a good way to offset the upcoming game drought.
