RUMOR: PS4 emulation of PS1/2 games.

How am I supposed to know the PS3 failure rate of a particular model? You're acting like I'm refusing to accept an argument that hadn't been presented.

You spend a lot of time here, I admit I'm genuinely surprised that you weren't aware that tons and tons of launch PS3s are non-functional now. This is not something PS3 owners have kept secret, far from it. People tend to be pretty vocal about that stuff.

I'm honestly surprised at the number of people who still have PS2 and PS1 discs they want to play, yet don't have the backwards compatibility versions of PS3. It seems like that would have been a pretty quick pickup at the time.

I have a ps2, and a bc ps3, and a pc capable of emulating many ps2 games.

ps2 and ps3, games look like hot shit on my pc.

Emulator is great, but I would prefer official and more reliable methods to play my games. PCSX2 randomly crashes on me, and when I'm playing an rpg, that's the last thing I want to worry about.

IF this is true, it would be the best solution to play games and would, hopefully, increase the IQ.

I don't understand why people act like this is some mysterious, inexplicable desire to have.

... Wait, what? You'd buy the $399 console not to play inFamous, Uncharted, The Order, Destiny, etc, but to play 10-20 year old games readily available on other consoles?

This would make me buy one as well since very little of the current and upcoming lineup has interest to me. First party sony titles are generally unappealing as well. Ps4 is primarily an indie box until some japanese style games start coming out.

Man I can just keep this URL right in my clipboard and handy for most of this thread it seems...

Hardly.

This emulation is going to cover PS1 and PS2 games, if it happens at all.

PS Now can cover PS1, 2, 3 games and can be played on PS3, PS4, PS Vita and eventually any Tablet or connected TV in the world.

Some people won;t buy a console, they'll just buy a PS Now subscription and enjoy a huge library of games anywhere and on nearly any device.

The PS4 emulating PS1 and 2 games really does NOT nullify PS Now.

Also add to that the number of people who've never touched a PS1 or PS2 disc, much less own one, will only continue to outnumber the people who own discs as time passes.

No it doesn't, not even in the slightest - PS Now was always primarily for PS3 titles, ever since Sony originally bought Gaikai and announced their early intentions. Having PS1 and PS2 titles emulated directly on the console from either download or disc-based is a good idea, and even if you have to buy the emulator itself, I'd pay NZ$10-20 for it.

Is this a joke?

I'd pay US$100 easily.

This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.

No it doesn't. This doesn't play PS3 games. Interest in PS2 games is fairly low in comparison, and there aren't any major retailers that even sell new PS2 games anymore. the closest you get are third party resellers on amazon and ebay.

There will be a small number of hardcore PS2 fans that still have extensive disc collections, and everyone else will be buying new copies (or renting them) digitally, which still helps sony.

Really? I didn't read through the topic, just looked at the tweet. Did Sony confirm this yet? I would love this if it were true, I'd buy a PS4 immediately.

There was a Eurogamer article a few weeks back making the same claim based on a Sony insider working on PSNow. This is basically another source making the same claim. People are getting their hopes up because it seems like multiple unrelated sources are in agreement. However, we don't know if there is ultimately any more than the one source, so others are still skeptical. And many people are just dismissing it outright because they aren't reading.

There really is no solid evidence to suggest Sony WOULDN'T allow the emulation to work with discs, assuming their PS2 emulator is stable enough. All the posts saying Sony would restrict discs to sell digital games is pure speculation. Nothing Sony has done in recent years suggests they'd do this. PS1 classics on PS3 have been able to sell just fine despite the fact that PS3s still play PS1 discs.

As for PlayStation Now and streaming, Sony has only ever mentioned PS3 games in relation to PlayStation Now. I don't ever remember them specifically mentioning anything other than PS3 games for that service. Furthermore, local emulation makes more sense for PS1 and PS2 games than streaming anyway (Shuhei Yoshida confirmed as much for PS1 games).

I actually think that PS4 could have PS1 & PS2 digital titles as well as being able to use the discs. Even if they were PS Now only, Sony would most likely need to build PS1 and PS2 emulators for x86-64 servers so they can be played on PS Now and those servers would not be as powerful as a PS4 is. Since PS4 is an x86-64 machine, said PS1 & PS2 emulators for x86 machines could easily be ported to it. Once the emulators are ported, they could play digital titles, of course, but since the disc drive is a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive, it can easily read a PS1 or PS2 disc. This is all simple easy stuff that Sony could theoretically do and the only disclaimer they need is a warning that not every PS1 & PS2 disc game will work on the PS4.

The hardest part of getting PS1 and PS2 content onto the PS4 even with PlayStation Now is building the emulator and making sure the digital ISOs work on it... Having it work on the PS4 and having it work with PS1 and PS2 discs is easy compared to it. In addition, Sony has shown to be trying to appeal to the consumer, so if they don't have to go too far out of their way, why wouldn't Sony allow PS4 to play PS1 & PS2 discs or allow digital downloads in addition to PS Now? Also, what are the third-parties going to do? Dump support of the best-selling console of this generation when they needed both the PS3 and Xbox 360 to make any money from last generation?

By the way, it's not a matter of having disc games OR digital games. It's either digital or both. PS1 emulation on the PS3 currently allows both.

I am serious. How much anyone here played PS2/PS1 games in early PS3 models?

Before I switched from my launch 60Gb to a slim, I used to play PS1/2 games extensively. Especially in the first year or two of owning a PS3.

Good games are good games. And the PS3 did an awesome job of upscaling the older games. Far better than hooking up the original consoles to an HDTV. Many PS2 games run at funky resolutions which the in-built scalers on HDTVs struggle with, resulting in horrible image quality.

I still play my digital PS1 games all the time, on both my PS3 and Vita.

This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.

Nope. PS Now will be for PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games. And who know, maybe even PSP and Vita games if they wanted.

Also, we don't know how the pricing model of PS Now will work. Will it be a per game cost, or a service subscription? Having local emulation allows you to play games you already own (maybe just digitally, we don't know yet). PS Now is meant to give you access to the entire library of games.

My PS3 Phat was almost exclusively a PS1/2/Blu ray machine for a while, newer games were failing to appeal to me. Most still do.

When it dies I was very sad.

If the PS4 could actually play disc based titles I would be impressed, and more likely to buy one down the road. I have always been under the impression that the system doesn't read CDs though so that cuts out PS1 games and some PS2 games.

It is a very small niche market. PS1/PS2 games has few save points, longer grinding parts and dont look good even with upscaling games. People today are not going to play.

Most of GameCube/Wii games, on other side, look great with upscale, are fun forever and you can play in short breaks.

That's just a limitation with the current firmware, not a technical limitation of the console / optical drive.

Sony have confirmed CD playback in coming in a future update.

Worst post of the day? Worst post of the day.

So let's clarify. Despite selling a combined total of over 250 million consoles and billions of games, the PS1 and PS2 are niche.

Where as the Gamecube isn't.

Jesus fucking christ, you just don't stop do you?

Torgo from PS Nation mentioned it on his podcast weeks before the Eurogamer article. Granted, he could have the same source as Eurogamer, but it's a bit unlikely since I don't think he has as many European contacts (Stewart Gilray aside, lol).

Are you a joke character?

I would just like to point out the success of FFX/X-2, ZOE, KH1.5, GoW, and MGS HD collections.

As just a few relevant examples as to why your statement makes no sense.

Few save points and longer grinding points? What games are you thinking of exactly? I see games like Spyro, Crash, God of War, Sly, etc. having the same potential for short burst playing as Super Mario Galaxy and Wind Waker... As for whole upscalability factor, many of Sony's HD re-release games like God of War, Ico, etc. look fantastic. Are you talking out of your butt or is there something that I am just completely missing?

I really hope this happens soon. I would love to play my PS2 games on the PS4 (assuming it would have disc-based emulation).

Dude, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Just stop.

Forgive me if this has been answered but who is the guy that put out the tweet?

Is he someone who leaks these rumors all the time? Does he have any validity? Or is this just some random dude spouting off stuff we wish we had and trying to hype up the internet?

T___T I lost most of my ps2 discs T_____T I miss Kessen (many others as well), do you guys know if Kessen will be back? loved that game.

Awesome. Did he indicate anything regarding disc-based support?

The 60 gb ps3 was always very expensive. I have a 20 gig model but most PS3s aren't BC.

Still can't believe Rez HD is still XBLA exclusive...

I remember reading something about Mizuguchi having to licence out Rez from Sega and then Microsoft paid for the development.

He also hinted at it possibly being released on other platforms but nothing ever happened.

PS2 emulation has been known to be CPU bound. You ain't getting all the PS2 games at 1080p without several glitches and bad framerates happening on PS4. There's a reason it's "select titles" and not everything.

Don't forget they have the source code and all the documentation of their hardware, they can make much better emulators.

Didn't they say at first that psn was not possible or even disk if i recall.
Yoshida said before ps4 launch they were looking into software emulation for ps1-2.

Also there is zero reason not to have it when PS3 does (and Vita with ps1) it was only a matter of time. The real question is if they would go so far as to allow disc based emulation.

Do we know for sure that the PS4 could be able to play CDs with a firmware update?

First, it would be more expensive to get an optical drive without the potential for CD playback than it is to get one that does. Second, I believe DVD and CD are read with the same laser. PS4 can play DVDs with a firmware update, therefore...

oh yea i think it was for psn ps3 titles., So in theory if this happens we will be able to use our ps1 classics that we bought on ps3 store on PS4?

I don't think this is for disks.

This pretty much kills all the hype. I don't care to pay again for games I already own.

I though that this would have been a good way to offset the upcoming game drought.

I doubt they would, but it would be cool if we could throw the disc in our PS4s and then either get it free or discounted on PSN.
