RUMOR: PS4 emulation of PS1/2 games.

I had no interest in the PS4 because of weak software lineup but this would actually make me purchase the console.

... Wait, what? You'd buy the $399 console not to play inFamous, Uncharted, The Order, Destiny, etc, but to play 10-20 year old games readily available on other consoles?

If Sony pull this off, its the best feature on the new gen consoles hands down. VR gaggles can fuck off. Sony can print "Your Welcome" as tag line on their Playstation ads all year long and I wouldn't bat an eye.

People want it for discs because the original console that played them is old, no longer in production, and might break at some point in the near future, so being able to play them in a newer machine extends the playable life of the games. Which is kind of, you know, the entire reason BC exists in the first place.

Indeed. Especially considering the thousands of games that will otherwise be unplayable outside of fan made PC emulators, because they will never get released digitally.

Disc based support isn't just some minor convenience for a small minority of consumers, it is the support of games as permanent creations rather than transient services.

Sony already uses a blanket emulator for its classics on PS3, PSP, and Vita. Why would they suddenly switch?

Because they would probably prefer to sell digital copies of each game, rather than allow you to insert discs? Services services services - not BC.

This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.

Hardly.

This emulation is going to cover PS1 and PS2 games, if it happens at all.

PS Now can cover PS1, 2, 3 games and can be played on PS3, PS4, PS Vita and eventually any Tablet or connected TV in the world.

Some people won;t buy a console, they'll just buy a PS Now subscription and enjoy a huge library of games anywhere and on nearly any device.

The PS4 emulating PS1 and 2 games really does NOT nullify PS Now.

Hasn't this been known for a long time? I thought Andrew House once said that PS1/PS2 would be software emulation, and PS3 would be streaming. If it wasn't him, it was someone, because I've known this for a long time.

This is *part of* PSNow, not a replacement for it. The local software emulation will only be accessible to PSNow users, based on my understanding of when I originally heard this.

I'm sure there will be interesting titles at a juncture but everything you list doesn't appeal to me. My large backlog of PS2 RPGs would be great to experience upscaled.

I am serious. How much anyone here played PS2/PS1 games in early PS3 models?

And what would be more replayable now, GTA San Andreas or Mario Galaxy HD?

Like many others, my launch 60GB PS3 still runs flawlessly (albeit loudly lol) and I used it extensively to play PS1 and PS2 games last generation.

I'm honestly surprised at the number of people who still have PS2 and PS1 discs they want to play, yet don't have the backwards compatibility versions of PS3. It seems like that would have been a pretty quick pickup at the time.

Playstation Now will never work for large parts of the world (well for a long, long time).

If anything this rumour compliments it nicely to provide more value for countries like China or even Australia.

Please

Mine died, what's your point? There's a lot of reasons. I also have a PS2 but it would be amazing to have enhanced emulation and the convenience of it all on one system again.

I had a b/c PS3, but it died late last year, so I bought a new PS3 to replace it, but it isn't b/c. I replay my old games quite regularly, so having b/c on PS4 would be a huge deal for me.

Hoooooooo shit! I reeeeeally hope "local" implies using the PS4 disc drive! I'd jump all over one ASAP if that's the case! With the 4's inability to play CDs, I'm guessing it'll work for PS1 PSN downloads, but hopefully PS2 will be streamable straight from the disc!

That would mean I'd have my PS3 for my PS1 and PS3 games...
And I'd have to get a PS4 to play my PS2 and PS4 games...

I'd be in heaven.

I'm in the exact same boat. My 60GB BC PS3 died right before the holidays so I snagged the $200 200GB Super Slim TLoU and Arkham Origins bundle. Now, my PS2 library is inaccessible... and if Sony let me play those games on a new PS4, I'll buy one a hell of a lot sooner than my originally planned late-2015 date!

Lots of us did pick them up. And then subsequently many of them bricked. I sent mine in to be repaired, but it was replaced by a new model without BC.

Is it really that mystifying?

Never going to happen.

I would get a PS4 instantly if it had PS1/PS2 disc compatability. I have lots of PS2 game discs. However, my PS2 is pretty much shit at this point, and I swapped my PS3 out with a slim because of the noise and power consumption even when turned off.

Other benefits of BC for PS2 games on PS4 as opposed to playing them on a PS2:
-Virtually endless memory card space
-Wireless controllers
-Potential graphical improvements
-HDMI

Something would need to go though as my TV ports and stand are full. Currently sitting at PS3, 360 (+HDDVD), Wii U, and PC. I don't use the 360 much anymore for gaming, so I'm inclined to pick that one, but I do still use the HDDVD player from time to time. PS3 I still play a lot and PS+ is godly. Wii U I use sometimes, and of course my PC is my Netflix player + Steambox.

Def. will not be going out to hunt down old PSX games to fill my collection with. So as long as this emulation can occur via Playstation NOW as well I'm good.

Colony Wars 1-3 @ 1080p? Yes please!

I just hope they offer more obscure titles like Robot Alchemic Drive too. The PSN offerings right now are a little disappointing in that regard.

No Colony Wars
No Dark Cloud

Hopefully Sony finally realized we live in the real world and most people don't have the bandwidth to even use the game streaming service and this ends up being true.

The game streaming stuff is nice for people that can actually use it. Sadly, most people can't and the people who have the speeds are limited to how much they can play due to shitty caps.

Both? Your logic on the HD remakes are flawed because 99.99% of games aren't going to be remade. Most of the stuff i enjoy playing on PS1/PS2 will never, ever, ever get a HD remake.

PS1/PS2 used market is huge, it's not like nobody in the world doesn't want this. If nobody wanted to play older games their streaming service wouldn't exist.

This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.

I don't see how. If this is disc only, then the only games you'll be able to emulate is the games you already own.

Unless you want to go eBay/garage sale hunting for old PS1/PS2 games, I'd say Now will be quite lucrative.

If this really means being able to play PS1/2 discs, then I will be extra excited to get a PS4 when a game I want for it releases on it and not PS3/WiiU/360.

after realizing the PS3 PS1 software emu adds 3 frames of lag to everything, i'm waiting on impressions (if this is real)

I could play this quality of PSOne games for the rest of my life.

Amazing, simply amazing.

Care to do Gran Turismo 1/Gran Turismo 2 if you have them? Front Mission 3? Colony Wars?

Thanks in advance!

Nice pick. Man why did that series go in the direction it did after that game I'll never know.

How am I supposed to know the PS3 failure rate of a particular model? You're acting like I'm refusing to accept an argument that hadn't been presented.

Because they would probably prefer to sell digital copies of each game, rather than allow you to insert discs? Services services services - not BC.

I think he was talking about classics sold through the store. I don't think allowing users to play discs would make them loose that much money anyway.

I hope they do end up offering Disc Based emulation. I would get a PS4 in a heartbeat. I don't see why Sony wouldn't offer Disc Based emulation since I bet they are making almost nothing in profit from physical goods of PS2 stuff. They can still offer digital titles to people who don't own the PS2 Disc versions of games for that nostalgia gameplay but Disc based emulation would get people like me who have 200 PS2 games and reason to get a PS4 without fear of losing access to my games.

Local PS2/PS1 support... so wait a minute, all my physical copies of games being playable on my PS4 could become a reality?!

What's the catch?

This nullifies the existence of Playstation Now. I doubt it.
No it doesn't, not even in the slightest - PS Now was always primarily for PS3 titles, ever since Sony originally bought Gaikai and announced their early intentions. Having PS1 and PS2 titles emulated directly on the console from either download or disc-based is a good idea, and even if you have to buy the emulator itself, I'd pay NZ$10-20 for it.

Dude stahp!! You had an unpopular/uninformed point of view, and deservedly got shit for it. Stop making this worse.

Please tell me this would be region free emulation. What would be the benefit of region restricting games that have been out of print for a decade or more?
