I was just wondering if this game will or already has come to the US? I'm a big SS fan and would love to pick this game up someday.

Not out, no plans for a U.S. release AFAIK, but if the rumored Samurai Shodown collection is true, it's supposed to come out in that collection. KOF XI, Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum, and SSTK are worth getting an import PS2 for alone, in addition to all the other great import-only games available.

Nope. It is coming out in Europe for sure (probably march or so), just like the other recent SNK games. Neo Geo Battle Colliseum is already out, KOFXI is coming out next month I think.

I actually doubt that SS collection will be released outside of Japan. Yeah, the Metal Slug collection is out or will be released soon in every region, but Metal Slug is far, far more popular than Samurai Shodown.

I think there's actually 2 "rumored" collections. One is suppossedly a volume in the Neo Geo Online Collection series (meaning it'll likely only contain the MVS SS1-4) and the other is coming from SNKP USA (like Metal Slug Anthology) so it may contain up to SS6...

True that.

But on the other hand, if SNKP wants to truly make a big splash starting with its Taito X2 generation of games, I would think that they would at least give it their best effort to give as many players as possible a chance to play their (new) classics, just so that more people could have access to the "history" behind a number of games that will be recieving Taito X2 follow-ups soon enough. For instance, SNKP has pretty much said that the Wii will probably end up being the "new/next gen console of choice" for all official releases after a while...it would definitely help their cause by releasing some of the collections on the Wii too, I would think.

Besides, if I remember correctly, Samurai Spirits/Shodown is STILL arguably the most popular of SNK's fighting game franchises in the US. KOF and Fatal Fury may take a bit longer for them to really try again, but they could be trying to utilize SS's old-school arcade appeal to appeal to the fanbase that does exist.

Aah, I've only heard of that Neo Geo online collection...but I thought SSTK was part of that as well, hmm. I guess we'll find out later this year.

Just looked it up, seems the Neo Geo Online Collection volume of Samurai Spirits is official (entitled Samurai Spirits Roku-ban Shoubu). No confimration on games yet, but going by the game amounts in other volumes I'd say SS1-4 are a lock.

Hopefully the rumored "Samurai Showdown Anthology" turns out to be true too though... I'm not sure what else SNKP USA could really use to put together another Anthology release? Maybe Fatal Fury but it's nowhere near as popular (plus there's no recent games) and KOF is just too huge to really do a single Anthology release for (12 games and going) though maybe it could be split into 2 volumes...

What about a World Heroes collection?
This would be more of a nostalgia item for me, my local arcades used to have world heroes 2 and jet and I'd used to play it a lot!

Already happening in Japan, again under the NGOC label. It's called "World Heroes Gorgeous", great title there. :)

I have a Japanese PS2...what are some good SNK import games and where can I get them? I have Metal Slug 3 but is there an anthology with all of them out? Also what is this Samurai Shodown game you are talking about, I have never heard of it.

Any reasonably good import site, such as play-asia.com, yesasia.com, and ncsx.com should have the goods.

As for recommendations? Well, if you're looking to fill up your arsenal with some SNK classics, there's the various collections/re-issues that are available now, as well stand to be out throughout the remainder of this year.

For instance, the first Fatal Fury Collection contains the first 3.5 games made in the series (Fatal Fury to Fatal Fury 3), while the new one coming out next month contains all of the games in the excellent "Real Bout" series. If you want the likes of Garou MOTW, a seperate re-release exists.

KOF has things all across the board - the "Orochi Collection" contains games 95-97, and KOF 94 Rebout contains a refurbished port of, well, 94. NESTS collection will contain 99-01 (again), when it releases later this. Good releases to be sure, but if you don't care that much about KOF's history, you'd be better off getting XI and then following it up with 98 Ultimate Match (remake of 98). Between those two, you would have the best of KOF old-school and new-school.

NGBC is a good title as well, for the most part. Plus it's just got its "Best" version, so it's cheaper.

There a number of more out there, but I've also heard about rather shoddy emulation for some of them, moreso with the Gekki no Kenshi/Last Blade two pack. I believe neo-geo.com would probably be the best place to get some reviews and previews for the different PS2 releases.

I have Metal Slug 3 but is there an anthology with all of them out?

Well, all except the 3D game. I heard that there was both a port for Wii and PS2, but I've only seen the Wii release domestically so far. Of course, maybe that might be just the matter of poor supplies in the area.

Also what is this Samurai Shodown game you are talking about, I have never heard of it.

Tenkaaichi Kenkakuden (or just "Tenka" in many circles) is the most recent game in the series, and is basically the "KOF98" of the series, by having as many characters from more current and past games altogether in one title, plus having different "Grooves" (think CvS2) that represent the overall playstyles of the different SS games past.

It may not have the "serious" aspects of SS in the past (no blood, fatalities, and etc.), but this game definitely does win on gameplay alone. I'd recommend getting it either through the "Best" version released a lil while ago, or you could just wait for the anthology that will include the game any way...

I'd reccomend the required "trilogy of awesomeness" to start out with:

-Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum
-Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden
-The King Of Fighters XI

(Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum has some lengthy load times, around 13-18 seconds per match. If you play survival mode, it's actually pretty short (like 3-4) seconds after the initial load, but everything else is LONG. If you play this game on PS3, the load times are more than halved and it becomes a much more playable game. KOF XI also loads faster, but it's load times were already shorter than the arcade version. SS Tenka is the same on both systems and takes around 5-6 seconds per match.)

And then follow those up with:

-Garou Mark Of The Wolves
-Twinkle Star Sprites La Petite Princess
-The King Of Fighters Neowave
-Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku: Bonnou Kaihou (Not SNK, but it's the Power Instinct game that appeared on the Neo with a few more characters added and some tweaks)
-KOF Maximum Impact 2 (Released Stateside as "KOF 2006")

I'd wait on the Metal Slugs and see if the PS2 Metal Slug Anthology game ever surfaces first.

I also can't recommend Melty Blood Act Cadenza enough. It's a great fighter.

Hold out for Garoudensetsu Battle Archives 2 next month, with the Real Bouts. Skip the first game unless you really, really love old Fatal Fury games. There's also Art Of Fighting Collection and KOF Orochi Collection, but the Orochi games' emulation have some sound issues. Avoid Last Blade 1&2; unfortunately it's an awful PS2 port.

It's ONLY THE BEST SAMURAI SPIRITS GAME EVER MADE, that's all! :D (It's the game that finally ursurped SS2 in my book, although SS2 will always have a place as one of my all-time favorites) I wish I had more time to write some more; just do a forum search and you'll find more info and pics from me and others. This SS is basically a KOF '98 style take on SS like Tre said. Every single character from SS1-5 is here, including Kuroko (the referee), Gaira with and without hair, the animals, etc. They're all playable. This also marks the return of characters not playable since SS2, like Wan-Fu, Sieger, Gen-An, and Nicotine. It also has different selectable playstyles based on past titles.

It's a must-have purchase if you've ever liked any SS game.

Ah I found an old thread:

Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden. You can of course get it from all the usual places, like NCSX and Play-Asia.

Brief game info:

sstselect5cc.jpg

The game has a HUGE roster, featuring every character from all the 2D Samurai Spirits fighting games. Characters not seen in playable form since SS2, like Gen-An, Sieger, Nicotine, and Wan-Fu are all back. SNK also added bonus unlockable characters to the PS2 version, such as Kuruko. Even the courier has returned, running across he backgrounds, tossing out various items to use. You can select whether or not you want to use these items in versus mode.

sststyles4dr.jpg

There are six different fighting styles to choose from, based on all the past SS games. In addition, three bonus PS2-only styles can be unlocked as well. With these styles and the added fifth button (for dodging and countering), you get a host of game play features, like the return of the CD style combos from SS4.

Visually, the game looks better than the last few SS titles; colors are more vibrant, special attacks have been enhanced with transparancy effects, and the backgrounds are all high res 2D. The character sprites are the same as always, but the overall look of the game is very nice. There are no filtering options, and the game is lacking in blood and character deaths, however. You can choose between original and arranged soundtracks, view pictures in the gallery mode, unlock more modes like survival, and more. Load times are minimal at around 5-8 seconds per match.

Basically, SS Tenka combines all the 2D SS fighters into one excellent package. This game is by far the best SS game ever made, trouncing even the almighty SS2 in my book, and is the best 2D fighter out on home systems (so far) this year. With KOF XI coming out this week, it will be facing some stiff competion!

The new characters:

sstnico14fq.jpg

Old characters return to fight again. That's Nicotine, doing a super that turns him young, in the second picture. :)

sstmatchup6pw.jpg

Newcomers include Iroha, a snow maiden, and Ochamaru, a spirit trapped inside a mechanical body.

Just got through playing Tenka with a couple friends for 5 hours straight. Awesome awesome game!! The grand finally of SS.

Yup, yup...packed with just about everything you could possibly want! Don't forget there's some bonus characters and fighting styles to unlock, too. You can also unlock a survival mode, art gallery/ending stuff, and a character customization (for balancing strength and such, but it's very Kanji heavy) mode.

OMGHOLYJEEZICANTBELIEVEITITSISAMU!!!!111 said:
OK fair enough... so do you know of a site I can go to that has translated pics for the different symbols and icons, specifically for the bust/slash icons? I can't figure out what any of this stuff means. You mention that you can pull off CD "dial-a-combos" ala SS IV? How do you get into that mode?

Each of the six (later expands to 9 when you unlock them) Kanji symbols you're seeing are different FIGHTING STYLES for the characters to use. There are no more bust/slash versions. You can look at each style as being somewhat based on different SS games; the SS4 CD combo style you want is the one I used in all the pics I put up. It's the "Ten" (heaven or sky; the same one on Akuma's back!) Kanji on the lower lefthand corner of this picture:

snapimg200601290044454ku.jpg

Plus, there appears to no longer be the little move list under your rage gauge from previous SS games. Is therean option to put them back there? How do I know how a power move is done?

ALL the super moves are done the same way, by doing a fireball motion and hitting the A and B slashes together. I want to say the default on PS2 would be triangle and circle, but without it in front of me, I can't quite remember! Definitely get yourself a FAQ though; one of the fighting styles gives all the characters an additional super move, and those are done with different input methods.

And I found the review I did of KOF Neowave in 2005. KOF XI is the better game IMO, but this game still rocks. With KOF '98 Ultimate coming out soon, I'd probably wait, but if you do get Neowave, make sure to get the Japanese PS2 version. It has characters that were removed from the game when it was released elsewhere and on Xbox.

Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Sammy/SNK Playmore
Publisher: SNK Playmore
Genre: Fighting
# Of Players: 1-2
Price: 6800 Yen
Released: 07/21/05 (Japan only)
Other: Online Play using KDDI Service (Japan only)

-------------------
--Game Info--------
-------------------

The King of Fighters Neowave was the first SNK title to be released on Sammy's Atomiswave arcade hardware rather than the Neo-Geo MVS. The game is essentially an upgrade to The King of Fighters 2002, and while the arcade version altered the line-up by removing several characters or making them unlockable hidden characters, the Playstation 2 version receives an additional five extra characters (Angel, Seth, May Lee, Omega Rugal, and Kusanagi), giving Neowave all of the original 2002 cast (minus K9999) plus Saishyu, King, Shingo, Jhun, and the game's new boss, the younger version of Geese Howard from Art of Fighting 2, making a total of 47 playable characters. Like KOF 2002 and KOF '98 before it, Neowave is a "Dream Match" game, meaning there is no storyline whatsoever.

neowaveclock21wr.jpg
neowavegeese2go.jpg

What's new to KOF Neowave lies in the game play. The game system has now been changed; there are five buttons rather than the standard four; the new fifth button activates your character's Heat Gauge. Going into Heat mode makes your character temporarily stronger, but causes your lifebar to drain until the mode is turned off.

The game play system has now been split into three separate selectable types of modes:

Super Cancel allows for up to three super bars, and the ability to cancel special moves into other special moves. Doing this will use one super bar, and you can also cancel into DMs, SDMs, and HSDMs (must have 1/6th life left) with two or three stocks stored.

neowaveclock17bc.jpg
neowavetrain27wd.jpg

Guard Break mode allows for Just Defend parry attacks a la Garou Mark of The Wolves. You get two super bars, and can also do unblockable guard break attacks which use up one of your super meters.

neowavetemple21rw.jpg
neowavetemple11cg.jpg

Max2 Mode has your character's super meter increases automatically, however, you lose the ability to roll or evade attacks (although you can do recovery rolls when you get knocked down). HSDMs can be done with 1/4th of your lifebar remaining.

neowavehsdm2qq.jpg
neowaveplant28zk.jpg

Although KOF Neowave's sprites are the same as KOF 2002, Neowave has a noticeably more colorful and smoother look compared to the Neo-Geo KOF games. You can choose from six levels of sprite filtering, as well as edit two of the character's four color schemes.
The backgrounds, high-res 2D in the arcade, and made 3D for the Playstation (both versions are selectable) with added day/night variations, are of a much higher quality than past games, although they do tend to look empty or are devoid of animation for the most part.

neowavebridge20ii.jpg
neowaveshipyard9xo.jpg

Neowave also has a brand new soundtrack, with both the original arcade and a new arranged version available, and both sound immensely better than the soundtracks found in the KOF games that were released after the old SNK shut down back in 2001. While not quite the same, the music reminds more of the older KOF games with mostly jazzier tunes and some tecnho thrown in.

neowaveplant15ip.jpg
neowavebridge12ix.jpg

KOF Neowave offers the usual array of play modes, including Team Play, Single Play, Practice, and Endless (survival) mode. Playing through the Endless mode will unlock bonus characters as well as character artwork in the gallery mode.

-------------------
--Overall----------
-------------------

Graphics: 8/10- The filtering options give the characters a smooth, colorful look, but these are still the same old sprites (some dating back to 1996) that are being reused over and over again. The detailed backgrounds really help to enhance the experience and make Neowave stand out from the other KOF games, but they come off as sparse and empty compared to some of the other KOF titles. Presentation is very bland, although none of it means much once you start fighting. Character artwork looks fantastic.

neowaveangel6gn.jpg
neowavecolor3an.jpg

Sound: 8/10- Great music that sounds much better than the soundtracks found in KOF 2001-2003, but still not quite up to pre-2000 standards.

Game Play: 10/10- A bit tighter compared to KOF 2002. The new Guard Break mode in particular makes an already in-depth fighter play even better and allows for even more types of game play. If you like the way KOF 2002 plays, chances are you will love KOF Neowave.

Replay Value: 8/10 (Not counting online play as I am unable to try it)- You can always spend countless hours going head to head with friends, but for single player, It's always nice to have more than just the standard practice and survival modes. Where are the time attack/challenge modes that KOF 2002 had?

-------------------
-------------------

The King of Fighters Neowave offers offers no (real) new characters or content, but there's no denying that this is easily one of the best KOF games in the series, and the new game play systems add more depth and new game play options that really help to enhance the overall experience. Reccomended for fans; casual players will likely want to pass on this and get The King of Fighters 2002/2003 two pack instead.

Bring to the US now!!!!!

Metal Slug Anthology set a great precident. Not in terms of control scheme (of course), but in terms of including all of the games including the most recent one. That was a great deal, and it is in contrast to most collections which leave out the recent installments. (Megaman X Collection for example)

A full compilation means gamers can get in on the series for the first time without missing any of the titles. That's great marketing for a country whose experience with previous entries might be sketchy...... I don't know about you, but I hate buying "Game X part 6" when I missed the previous entries.

True, but with many fighting games this really doesn't matter. You really only need SS Tenka...you don't need to have played the previous games to enjoy it either, but obviously it would help in knowing who's who. Really, the only reason I occasionally go back and play the older SS games is for the atmosphere. Tenka's gameplay just spanks all the older SS titles though.

I would rather see SNK Playmore make an SS anthology that included the two Hyper Neo-Geo 64 SS games. I never got to play those and they have characters that aren't in the 2D SS games (although they are the Neo-Geo Pocket Samurai Shodown! 2)

I've spent quite a bit of time with this game, and although I think it's quite good, I just got tired of the extremely slow pace of the game. It's definitely not as fast as SS50. Characters like Iroha, at high level, literally bring the game to a standstill because you're just forced to sit and block.

But I guess it's not a big deal if you just want to muck around in a fighting game :)

Lyte Edge

SS5 Special is too fast and those AB slashes are back to older SS levels of way too much damage.

Tenka kills the rest because of the variety of game play options available to the player, plus the larger roster. If you want to talk about character balance and tactics, that's a different story.

Also for those who don't know, SS5/Special and Tenka are made by different developers. Yuki, the developer of SS5/Special, are the same team responsible for the recently-released arcade fighter Arcana Heart.

But I can understand wanting all the games in one compilation. That would indeed be quite awesome. :)
