SCEJ may be planning PS4 event before TGS

The Last Guardian to be announced as a surprise PS4 launch title

They're making plans for a new IP to be exactly that. Essentially, it'll be an imitation of the FF style, but it's early stages at the moment. So, you'll be waiting a while before you hear anything. Team needs to be built etc.

YES YES YES

Though this makes it sound like it won't be a Legend of Dragoon sequel at all. I don't care. Make this happen STAT

Demon's Souls 2
Gundam Extreme VS Full Boost
Persona 5
The Last Guardian
Shenmue 3
New Tales of

BELIEVE

this reminds me of a post from a 'NEW FAMITSU REVEAL THIS WEEK!' thread...

...of course followed by Charlie Brown-head down moments when it turns out to be Gundam Musou 87 for the PSP. :{

I'm assuming the reason as to why The Last Guardian has been pushed back so much would undoubtedly be due to re-making the game for the PS4?

I have zero knowledge of gaming development...but what would that entail, bringing the game up to the level of graphical fidelity required of the PS4 / this new generational standard?

This had better happen. If Sony abandons this project like they've abandoned so many others, I'll be completely crushed. They NEED an exclusive first party RPG franchise, and it's almost insulting that they haven't had one since Dark Cloud ended.

Keep us posted if you hear anything else of worth related to it.

I will. I was just dropping a bone since people are always curious about it.

Last generation was very Western focused, for good reason, but now that they're stabilised and consistent, there'll be more focus on getting SCEJA into a better state. Not that they're in a bad state, but in terms of scouting more talent, building/expanding teams, and getting some more focused content. There's going to be a big focus on Japan from SCE. This project is basically one shot, and they'll want it to succeed against all costs. You mentioned Dark Cloud for example, but that's simply not good enough. Neither is crap like Star Ocean. These are mediocre and you need something that stands far above them in terms of quality. They're not going to waste this kind of money to produce something on that level. For that, they need the right people, so they're in the team building phase right now whilst the concept is sorted out.

An imitation of Final Fantasy is a pretty good start to build a concept from. And let's be honest, it's not like the first time they tried to copy it. That's what they need to aim for though, a fusion of West/East, and maybe get some Japanese author to pen a story/script for them. Obviously, there's not much to say right now, but if done well, this could be really good. Or it could spectacularly fail.

We'll see how it goes.

It sounds like the project you're talking about is an Uncharted-level attempt at an RPG, at least from a quality standpoint. Do you really think there are any creators in Japan who could pull that off? Sakaguchi hasn't made a truly good JRPG since Lost Odyssey, and he's really the only one who's still technically freelance and he's admittedly not a fan of Sony. Matsuno would be really tough, since he seems focused on smaller games lately, and I'm not sure the level of quality Sony would want is something he can provide.

I'm just not sure who exists in the industry right now who could LEAD a project of the magnitude you're citing. And I don't think SCEJ is going to be willing to put it in the hands of an unproven newbie...

What do you think? I'm sure they don't have anyone specific in mind yet, but maybe you have some theories?

Demons Souls 2
New info on KH and FF15
Ni No Kuni 2
New Tales teaser

I think these things are believable.

Namco already said they had no plans for a next gen Tales and are focusing on the PS3. Maybe by 2015...

Btw as for Persona 5, I posted this in the Persona Community thread...

Guys are aeana and duckroll hinting at Persona 5 for PS4? <_<

First I noticed this post from duckroll in the "Is Atlus going to have a strong showing at E3?" thread:

So many interesting opinions here. Maybe Atlus will surprise most people...

Then I also noticed this post from aeana in the "All these new systems are nice but what I want to see at E3 is Persona 5. Please?" thread:

Things are sure gonna be interesting around here when it's finally announced.

Also in the "Is Atlus going to have a strong showing at E3?" thread, I heard duckroll say this in reference to P5 on the PS4:

I believe.

Harmless comment right? Well this is what aeana said in response:

It'll end up on a handheld too!
Eventually.

OK? duckroll's response:

Well... it'll be on a portable day 1. Unless it uses the camera!

Hmm. As we know, all PS4 games need a mandatory Vita remote play option unless they use the camera.

Her response:

Am I reading into stuff too much or is that what they're getting at? I also heard duckroll saying to "save up" to another user in reference to P5 I believe but I haven't been able to pinpoint that post.

Sony should buy some smaller Japanese devs. They expanded a lot in the west this gen, now its glorious nippons turn.
Who would you recommend? I have little to no knowledge of Japanese devs, but they need talent from somewhere.

Personally, I think they should try and rob some from Square Enix. I know with the amount of changes happening there internally, and how some folks are wasted away on mobile games, that there could be some that'd make the jump. They have some really talented art designers, so that could be a good start.

Edit:

Well, it's going to need an Uncharted style budget.

I have no idea to be honest. I just know of concepts and plans. I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to developers in Japan who have led big RPGs etc. There are folks who we may not even be aware of that could make good leaders, or other talent that could suit this kind of project well. That's their job to discover, but I'm sure there are some since there are often a lot of unknown people in important roles under Directors or Game Designers who people actually know of. There are some people even in SCEJA that would make a good fit to have in senior positions for a project like this due to their tenure and previous work.

Expect them to only bankroll DLC and exclusive "content"
If they didn't pay for FFXV and KH3 they won't pay for anything.

bankrolling a final fantasy or kingdom hearts game requires an 8 figure check at the very minimum

something like persona would be much cheaper and quite feasible but unfortunately they don't seem interested in doing the co-publishing thing like ms and nintendo have

Excellent news. Sony needs a diverse portfolio of games like they had on ps1

Man, I would love to see Sony try to beat Final Fantasy at its own game. Their past few non-Demon's Souls RPGs have all erred a bit too hard on the anime side of things, which is probably why they floundered in the West. A solid, serious story with mature, nuanced characters and some relatable themes would probably go over really well if they market it properly. Like Lost Odyssey, but on a platform with gamers who are more receptive to Japanese games. And less general Unreal Engine 3 jank.

Hopefully Yoshida picks the right guy (or gal) to lead the project. A truly exemplary JRPG from Sony's first party studios would be a sight to see. And if they do that AND Demon's Souls 2, I might just have to buy a PS4 after all.

Does The Last Guardian show up here or Gamescom?

If you want to counter MS's opportunity to make a come back in Europe, don't you debut The Last Guardian PS4 there at Gamescom?

SCEJ is already working on Knack and TLG so I guess we can expect those and a new HSG. Pretty much every other big IP except FF, KH, and probably Yakuza is releasing for PS3 so I don't know what else to expect.

It'll be at this event or TGS. I think that they'll probably show off some European developed games at gamescom.
