Posted today for the 5th anniversary of the game this week.
Microsoft should give Rare a chance to make a Fable game.
Goldeneye was on the N64, much smaller audience but still a big game at the time. (Still my favorite Rare game). It makes you look back and realize many classic Rare games were seen as bigger than they were.
Goldeneye and Kinect Sports were both less successful than this game. Think about that.

On topic I never really got into Sea of Thieves, tried it when it came out and it just didn't click. Happy for Rare though, Hopefully their next game does as well.
I remember there was some speculation after Lionhead closed down that Rare might take over the Fable franchise, but this was before Playground's game was announced of course.Microsoft should give Rare a chance to make a Fable game.
It depends how you look at it.It makes you look back and realize many classic Rare games were seen as bigger than they were.

Donkey Kong Country sold more than Goldeneye with over 9 million copies and was the second highest selling game on the SNES after Mario World.Rare never had a game come close to selling Goleneyes 8M.
Not even Kinect Sports did that, it just made more money.
Rare I repeat, when looking back never really was that big outside of 007. Banjo sold what, 3 million for the first game only?
You would think it was much bigger with how the fan base speaks about it. Explains why Microsoft is hesitating to make Banjo 4.

Back in the day, it was absolutely insane that a licensed James Bond game that came out 2 years after the movie it was based on became the 3rd highest selling N64 game with 8 million copies sold. Goldeneye was a cultural phenomenon when it came out. It even outsold Ocarina of Time!
Donkey Kong Country sold more than Goldeneye with over 9 million copies and was the second highest selling game on the SNES after Mario World.
Both DKC2 and DK64 sold over 5 million and Diddy Kong Racing came pretty close to that number as well. In fact, DKR was the fastest selling game of all time at release and made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
When you look at these numbers by themselves, they may not seem that large or impressive, but they sold incredibly well for the time period and consoles they came out on. You say Banjo only sold 3 million, but it was still in the N64's top 10 selling games list.
Rare's games were really big at the time. There's a reason they have the legacy they have.
You're moving the goal posts there i think. By your logic you shouldn't count Goldeneye either as thats not a rare IP.You're looking at it wrong.
N64 had massive droughts and games dropped off often. Goldeneye was one of the few games that sold through most of the N64s life in stores.
Secondly, you're comparing Rare handled games to them working on Nintendo ips.
Not one Rare handled ip outside GE sold 4 million copies before Kinect Sports, not even Killer Instinct at it's most hype.
Without the DKC ip, which was Nintendo FP, all those games would have sold substantially less. This goes for the prerendered novelty gimmick if DKC too.
You're moving the goal posts there i think. By your logic you shouldn't count Goldeneye either as thats not a rare IP.
End if the day they are all Rare games regardless of who owns the ip if they sucked then they wouldn't have sold what they did.
No, we're talking about the game you never played. You mean the game that came out that was an early access title disguised as "Released"?
Why are some people still bitter about the state of the game 5 years ago? Who honestly cares? You mean the game that came out that was an early access title disguised as "Released"?

Probably because that's when the vast majority of people are going to play a game, is near release. When there's going to be the most players online and the playing field is the most level.
A novel concept, I know.
Honestly I loved the game as it was when it released. Just a peaceful sailing simulation in an open ocean. I was happy just docking my boat a few centimeters from the pier. Why are some people still bitter about the state of the game 5 years ago? Who honestly cares?
It doesn't matter if you've been playing from day 1 or are new, the playing field in the game is always level. But most people at least try playing a game before making such statements about it.
A novel concept, I know.
Bullshit
Multiplayer games are not intrinsically a level playing field as more time goes on, unless you're constantly cycling new players.
Especially for a game that is 5+ years old, it's not going to be new people who gave it those legs, but those who've stuck with it. Look at every other multiplayer game that has stuck around for proof of that.
Every single ship is exactly the same. Every Galleon is the same, etc. Doesn't matter if you've been playing for 5 years or not.
Sour taste in my mouth that stings to this day. Just like no man's sky and destiny. You have to have so standardsWhy are some people still bitter about the state of the game 5 years ago? Who honestly cares?
People ITT downplaying the success of Goldeneye should post their age first.
anyone who did this was a POS. remember rounding the corner when you were oddjob and someone was Jaws and you just light up their ankles lolOddjob mains.
I mean, I was born literally the year it came out and even I understand all this. I think it's mostly people who were PC gamers at the time that downplay the game.People ITT downplaying the success of Goldeneye should post their age first.
It’s not a game that you can use sales to strictly quantify the game and its impact both to gaming and culturally. Nearly everyone from that era has a Goldeneye story because it was THE console MP game of its generation and no other console had anything like it.
And PSX fanboys. It was a major source of contention back in the day. I was 15 when the game came out and it was like the first real console warring I remember lol.I mean, I was born literally the year it came out and even I understand all this. Phenomenal game. Anyone who tries to downplay its success is a troll or just a fucking console warfare idiot.
Game started out slow, but it's amazing now. Wish I had time to play it like before :/
It's a sandbox that places an emphasis on the players not needing their hand held, to go out and make your own adventures, etc. If you don't have clear direction then it can get stagnant pretty quick.I love parts of Sea of Thieves. The first time you take out a ship onto the water it just feels epic. The game is beautiful to look at. (Well.. some character models not so much..)
But.. there is so little gameplay holding it all together. It's almost like a giant VR chat or something.
Exactly, kids these days have no idea how it was 25 years ago. Rare was one of the most respected developers in the world behind Nintendo 1st party. But regarding sales even selling 3 million copies of a game in 1996 was a massive feat given the player base and gaming landscape of the time.People ITT downplaying the success of Goldeneye should post their age first.

Sea of Thieves is popular, but it isn't on the level of the upper echelon of multiplayer/MMO games. Many activities require a large chunk of time and because of that, SoT isn't a daily driver type game. It's the type of game you play on your days off work or if you have a block of 2-5 hours to devote to a game. Also, if you are just using Steam numbers, you could probably double that number when you include all the Microsoft PC and Xbox players. I just checked Steam Charts and SoT is just shy of 20k players. So roughly 40k players playing SoT on a Tuesday is pretty damn good. How would you respond to someone who said the concurrent player base never grew after any of the updates? You'd see player population spikes for a week or two and then the game would drop back down to its vanilla (2018) popularity until the next big update hit 6 - 9 months later?
Asking for a friend.

Okay, I get it.........but that was 5 years ago. It'd be one thing if the game never changed and literally stayed the exact same all these years, but there's so much more to the game now than there was at launch. It's currently in the state people wanted it to be when it launched, so why not just try it again?Sour taste in my mouth that stings to this day. Just like no man's sky and destiny. This might be one of the dumbest posts I’ve ever read on any forum and I’ve been using the internet since the 90s.Ironically, anyone that's actually old knows GE didn't really bring anything to the table to fps.
It was The console FPS on a system with game droughts and was arguably the biggest release on the console when it came out, with few other options.
But craziest part about this post was no one was originally downplaying its success, you just kind of invented it until now.

GoldenEye was a staple of MP throughout the entire generation. It’s the game everyone wanted to play with their friends and if you had this game or your friend had it, there is a good chance his living room was always full of kids paying split screen MP. Absolute juggernaut in its day.Exactly, kids these days have no idea how it was 25 years ago. Rare was one of the most respected developers in the world behind Nintendo 1st party. That kids an Xbox troll trying to pump up Rares decline since MS took over.
Ladies and gentlemen: the wrong take.Ironically, anyone that's actually old knows GE didn't really bring anything to the table to fps.

I’ve been online long enough to know that sometimes you see a take so bad that you know responding earnestly is a waste of everyone’s time. History isn’t written by you and your take is far from accurate, and I accept there isn’t anything I can say that will change your mind. Some people just want to go against the grain with their takes and it is what it is.When you can't respond, avoid addressing the the facts and call the facts dumb.
