God, CJY, stop making excuses for Sega fucking up games we paid for.God, Dark1X... stop being ridiculous. Sonic 1 runs fine. Could you be any more melodramatic... Christ.
This could be interesting. They also talk about potentially releasing games that weren't localised either like Segagaga which would be awesome.
Now if only the Android version worked on my Nvidia Shield TV.
Your phone is fine. You could run all of these games on a free emulator at smooth 60fps, even if you had a Galaxy S2.So yeah, Kid Chameleon doesn't run particularly smooth on my phone. I do have a Samsung Galaxy Core LTE from 2015, so it is an older phone. But yeah, the game stutters for me a bit and doesn't give a smooth frame rate.
Crying shame this. The marketing campaign was excellent echoing the confident awesomeness of nineties era Sega but they've completely fucked up the debut of this. First impressions are everything so I'm worried the service might be doomed now. Sega really should have cut a deal with the Retroarch guys and got a decent emulator. It's like they poured all their budget in to marketing and totally cheaped out on the actual production. Maybe a quick fix to rectify this shit is on the way? Not holding my breath.
Also agree with all of you that this should have been a "Sega Forever" app. That would have been far more attractive and much more tempting. That shit is something I'd rush to download, not individual poorly emulated ports that can't hold a stable frame rate.
Fix your shit Sega, and fix it quick.
I think they messed up here - though its not too late to fix.
They should have released the one app - Sega Forever with the games inside it rather than seperate games all over the App store. Then people can regularly check back into Sega Forever to download new titles as they choose
Right now - if they plan on releasing lots of Sega games, I don't want to have to scroll through 100 apps in the app store everytime.
Then why do games flash like 50 logos before they start? Developer, publisher, actual developer, havok, etc. (I guess it was worse during the PS2 era)They tried but the retroarch guys wanted to have retroarch branding in the games, which is an insane request for something like this, tbqh. Of course if you're hired to do a service for some other company, it's going to have that company's branding and not yours. And it's sure as shit not going to have any retroarch branding anywhere. Not on something like this. Why would Sega want to boycott themselves like that? Not sure what they were thinking there.
Of course, they got pissed and tweeted this, which shows how professional they are. Stay classy, retroarch guys.

Donwloaded Kid Chameleon just to see how ot was.
Holy fuck does this shit run badly, I believe it's sub 30fps and the music crackles continuously.
How in the world can you release something that can't hold 30fps on an iPhone 7 but ran perfectly on a Mega fucking Drive?
Does Sega think people are so stupid they won't notice?

Our platform (libretro) and our frontend (RetroArch) is by no means perfect. But it can play Comix Zone, Sonic, Phantasy Star II and more with great sound, great performance and lots of enhancements under a wide variety of platforms. I'm biased of course but really, companies can do a lot more damage to their own IP than passionate open source developers / fans can do.
Forgive my ignorance, but was Phantasy Star II available on Android/iOS before this SEGA Forever version launched? If yes, did it run better than this one?
Where are you getting that from?
1. We were not hired, we weren't being paid for. We were working on good faith thinking something good may come of it.
GoGame / Sega are free to use anything in the end, it's their IP, if they want to drag it through mud it's their problem not ours. But when someone does some work for someone, the very least you can expect is a reply.
Going dark is unprofessional, disrespectful and flat out annoying.
2. We didn't want logos in the games, a small libretro logo in a splash would have been enough and we weren't all that demanding either, actually it wasn't a deal breaker at all.
A powered by libretro mention in credits or anything wouldn't be outlandish.
Haven't you seen the intros of every single game out there? mentions of bink, havok and whatever other framework in use?
3. GPL.
Look people, and even publishers (and this might be even bad for us)
YOU CAN USE GPL SOFTWARE AS IS.
Regarding RetroArch in particular, they could have built RA with no menu and made their "fancy" menus in unity or java or whaver and used them as launchers for a native activity. The only thing they would have required to do is to link to our github repo.
The only showstopper would have been GPGX because it's non-commercial.
But we weren't going to use that anyhow! we were going to port their own commercially licensed emulator (DGen or something)

It's just shitty software/emulation. These companies act like there are no standards in the industry or like emulation never existed at all.
I think it was GoGame more than Sega, I don't think we ever talked to a real Sega employee.
Thanks for hightlighting that part I was gonna make it bold
We appreciate your presence in this thread. It's enlightening and great to have you here!
.
Regarding Sonic 1, seriously WTF? The paid version is one of the best ports of all-time (all praise our lord and saviour Taxman) so they've literally re-modeled the game to have video ads in between the acts? Christ that's the worst possible idea in the universe.
As I've stated on Sonic Retro, Sega evidently threw masses of money in to a slick marketing campaign and cheaped out on the actual production and execution, such as securing a decent emulation solution like RetroArch.
Hope Sega see the negative press shit storm and reboot this, because as a concept it's still fantastic.
They want ad revenue and to cross sell new releasesits not a single app?
wtf?
Why are these a 120MB download for a 2MB game?
What a fucking waste of space.
Only downloaded Comix Zone and was immediately disgusted by the music and framerate lurching around wildly. Go home Sega Forever you're drunk. Reminds of me of DotEmu's work, surprised they aren't involved.
