Shadow Warrior for PS4 out now – any good?

A few hours in now and I like it.

I don't know if I should. The gunplay is a bit off and it's fairly repetitive (though the environments are nice). Yet I can't seem to put it down and even though I'm thinking that I shouldn't like it, the fact is that I enjoy playing it quite a bit.
 
Played the Introduction and the 1st Chapter. Amazing game, so much fun.
Haven't noticed much drops nor tearing, but there were no explosions so...
 
I've only played the PC version and it's good but too damn long.
I got to chapter 9 (of 17 or something I think) in the game before I got tired. I put in about 40min-1hr per chapter.

Nothing wrong with a 12-17hr campaign, better than having a really short game, after all, you can space it out and make it last a few weeks.

Not even if you switch to advanced steering in the menu? That let you do as many blows in one direction as you wanted in the pc version.

I had no idea this option existed, but I'm not sure if it's in the console version. I certainly didn't come across it.

The PC version is easily one of the best recent FPS. It's a big improvement over the developer's last game, Hard Reset. So long as the console version compares, you should absolutely like it.

One thing that playing Shadow Warrior and Destiny has reminded me, though, is that while I do love fetishising me a good gun, the games I find really difficult to accept are the games that fetishise boring guns. On reflection, I think this may be the source of my long-standing disinterest in the Battlefield and Call of Duty games. Oh sure, I've had some good times with them, but once you get past the good looks and capture a few control points, what are you left with besides all the disconnection notices and jingoism? Oh look, an AK-47. Oh look, a red-dot sight. Oh look, a pistol grip. Try the veal.

Shadow Warrior, despite not being the four hundred and sixty seventh instalment in the world's biggest gaming franchise, knows what's up. It has a double-barrel shotgun that looks like a catfish, which is excellent on its own: it has almost no recoil and turns weaker enemies into a fine red mist. Getting hold of it after trying to chew people to bits with an unbranded Uzi for half an hour is like realising the big pills in Pac-Man let you eat ghosts. But then you go to the weapon menu and the first upgrade you notice is "Add two more barrels." First of all: brilliant. Second of all: this is how you sell players on an upgrade. Technically you're just spending 4000 coins on more power, but the upgrade text and updated animation both respect the fiction of the gun, and this inevitably rubs off on the player.
 
I know L2 and R2 are the blade attacks but how do I control the direction of the blade?

You can control by turning it on in the options menu. Also, the PS4 version maps special moves & attacks on the touch pad so you can swipe and press R2 to register the move.
 
I'm about an hour into this on PS4 so far, and I'm having an absolute blast. I haven't noticed any problems with tearing. I hope people give this game a shot if you haven't played it on PC before.
 
It's really weird that Shadow Warrior ended up being really resource intensive considering how ridiculously optimized Hard Reset was. I could run that game maxed out at 60FPS on a GTS 250.
 
Slightly disappointed by a lack of included later levels from the game, because it can get very, very heavy later on, like after chapter 12 or 14.
Yeah, I didn't have enough time to include videos from the later levels but from what I've seen while playing the issues remain pretty similar. Performance issues definitely crop up more often later in the game, though.
 
I'm at the end of Chapter 5. The game keeps getting better and better, and now that I bought the Explosive Bolts upgrade the game is even more chaotic.
But I'm start to see those "Find & Break 3 statues to progress" parts as lazy development, that are only there to make the game last longer.

I quite like it myself but do think it gets a bit tedious later on (especially the damn shipyard levels). They just start boxing you in over and over again and just flood the scene with enemies so you wind up fighting hordes of enemies in somewhat limited environments. Really wish they hadn't taken that approach.

It feels more like Doom, (old) Wolfenstein, Painkiller, Serious Sam and the Unreal games. It's a nice mix. And this game looks really good. Okay, it's not "next gen" but it definitely wasn't possible on last gen consoles. The environments are beautiful but the characters (especially human characters) look..eh...dated, lol.
 
Wow this game gets even better. The secrets and hidden rooms are amazing. Guys, BUY THIS GAME. It's worth full price and it's better than most next gen retail games. I've played 5 hours so far and I'm in chapter 5 out of

Let's not throw Doom into the mix here. Doom is nothing like Serious Sam or Painkiller (Unreal is something completely different as well).

Doom is a much more nuanced experience thanks to excellent level design. You're never locked in an area and forced to deal with waves of enemies. They're integrated organically into the level design. The levels themselves were like puzzle boxes as well requiring you to figure out how to open up new areas in order to proceed.

Shadow Warrior is more like a Serious Sam game as opposed to the original Shadow Warrior which was modeled more after Doom (though its level design wasn't nearly as good).
 
Thinking of picking this up, even though I am swamped. Watched a few videos and it looks pretty amazing with the old school design and well hidden secrets and such. Seems like a pretty good package for a remake.
 
I just got this game, is it a Bulletstorm, Serious Sam kinda game where you are just fighting waves of dudes over and over?
For the most part. Occasionally you'll have close encounters with just one or two but as the game progresses it just becomes more enemies, more types of enemies, more big enemies.
 
I haven't played the PS4 version, but the PC game was the best shooter I've played in a long, long time. It's a ton of fun -- the developers clearly know how to do first person combat.
 
Saw that they turned off real time reflections for the console versions, which is a good trade for better performance. Sucks that it sounds like it does still suffer from some minor screen tearing.

Oh yeah? Didn't realize they patched that in. Reflections are KILLER on the PC in terms of performance though they're also more detailed.

Edit - just checked and there is no patch available on ps4. It's still 1.00.
 
Gameflyed the PS4 release at launch and enjoyed it. Already had the PC version so I didn't get all the way through because of all the other releases.

It is unique and quite fun. The sword elements blend really well with the shooting.

Took out from the PC version is what I meant. There were never reflections in the console ports.
