Should PS5 games be supported on PS4/PS4 Pro?

This is exactly right. Sony needs to push the new console, and forward-compatibility would hinder sales.

That's not entirely true, people would still rush to get a PS5 to get the best gaming experience possible just like people are buying a Pro now for the minor upgrades that provides over the PS4. PS5 would have a much bigger jump and people would pay for that.

Edit: Plus do they really need to push new hardware day one? Not really as long as people are buying into Sony's eco system it doesn't matter if they use a PS4/Pro/PS5 as long as the retain them as a customer it doesn't really matter when they decided to upgrade as long as they stay within Sony's ecosystem that's all that matters to them.

I don't care about BC at all. There is simply no need.
Just don't sell your old console and games and you should be fine.

Lots of people sell or trade in their old consoles to be able to afford the new one.

Not to mention that having your entire game catalog from last gen work on the new console is easier and looks better than having tons of consoles connected to your TV.

Not to mention that the newest Ps4 update introduced the concept of boost mode. It opens up the posibility of Ps4 games not only being compatible with Ps5 but mabye even running better.

Likely not. I'm hoping that the PS5 has a built-in SSD for the OS and games, with every game actually being developed with the SSD speeds in mind from the ground up. I wonder what advancements that could provide?

Fuck no. Backward compatibility? Sure that's cool. Forward compatibility? Just no. When you bought PS4, did you want it to be limited to what the PS3 is capable of?

There's not one game on PS4 that wouldn't be possible on PS3 from a gameplay or design standpoint. Not a single one. Forward compat wouldn't change that. Diminishing returns is a real thing and is here to stay.

Really depends on the game that developer wants to make ... if it is feasible for them to have a ps4 version with all the features of the ps5 sans the graphical advantages , then why wouldnt they use the already available userbase .

Forward compatibility makes people sit all salty and jealous on the fence with the old box downplaying the differences overshadowing the excitement.

Backwards compatibility makes people jump in on the new box day 1 all excited hyping the differences overshadowing the negatives.

So, no.

Always BC, never FC. No drawbacks and it makes the world seem a little brighter.

No PS4 forward compatibility with PS5.
In fact, PS5 will not have b/c with PS4.
Just support Steam before Sony pull a fast one. Show publishers that Steam does not discriminate and accept all games.

NO.

Fuck that shit. Just...fuck it.

Keeping the same x86-64 architecture and off-the-shelf PC parts will make that transisition a lot smoother, so there is ZERO reason they can't do a clean break from the other two as long as backwards compatibility is allowed.

I do not want games to be shackled to a 7870 GPU and fucking Jaguar cores in 2020/2021.

No. You buy new systems to play the newer games. If you could play PS5 games on PS4 there would be no reason to upgrade.

Yes, absolutely. Most PC games can scale from the extreme low-end to the extreme high-end, there's no reason the consoles have to be any different. A bigger market is beneficial for everyone.

No. You buy new systems to play the newer games. If you could play PS5 games on PS4 there would be no reason to upgrade.

That sounds like you are being forced to upgrade even though you might not want to.

I flat out refuse to buy a console with no exclusive games I give a rats ass about 4k/8k HDR...
power jumps ect. If ps5 games are playable on any ps4 its a waste of time.

No, you need to give people a reason to upgrade.

Going forward I can't imagine Sony not having PS4 BC on the PS5, especially now consoles are more PC like in structure.

There's not one game on PS4 that wouldn't be possible on PS3 from a gameplay or design standpoint. Not a single one. Forward compat wouldn't change that. Diminishing returns is a real thing and is here to stay.

That's a bit overboard. Some games sure but there are many advancements in animation, physics and other complexities which maybe aren't that obvious to the player that just aren't possible and would need huge compromises that might mean two development paths. For every Rise of the Tomb Raider, FIFA, there will be a Shadow of Mordor. There is a time to move on.

100% BC needs to happen, it'd be extremely foolish and risky not to implement it from day 0. Sony is in such a good position this Gen and BC is a good way to take that momentum over to the next Gen. BC and Boost makes the decision which platform to choose a no-brainer as long as they don't fuck up PS5 of course.

Forward compatibility is more difficult, if it wouldn't hold back PS5 games at all both in gameplay, graphics etc. then absolutely go for it! But if it does then please don't do it.
Maybe implement FC for the first two years or maybe only on the Pro, I don't know.

Stream PS5 games via PS Now to every available device possible for more casual players, sell PS5 for people who care about input lag, graphics etc.

This only works out when PS Now works reasonably well though.

No.

Developers can make crossgen tittles in same way as before.
Even then gamers dislike them for reason of games suffering as result.
Either nextgen version is not extremely impressive or lastgen versoon is really rough.

People keep saying that if it was "forward compatible" then there would be no reason to upgrade from a PS4 and yet clearly a fair few people do think it's worth it as proven by the Pro for the minor upgrades that provides.

I think Sony will aim for 100% backwards compatibility with PS5 and a "Boost Mode+" plus for it. They also need to ensure that the communities between PS4 and PS5 aren't divided for example so you can party chat with your friends that are still on PS4 while you are on PS5.

As far as "Forwards compatibility" goes I think we will get cross gen games in the launch window and I am hoping I won't have to double dip on those. If I buy the game on PSN I get it upgraded to the PS5 version for free or at least heavily discounted. There will of course be PS5 only titles that take advantage of all of the PS5's features but there will also be titles that will work across PS4/Pro/PS5 as well I'm sure.

It sounds like backwards compatibility is more or less a given with the PS5, after the precedent set by the PS4 Pro and the lack of any real technical challenge given the architecture being used.

But how about forward compatibility?

I feel like this gen is really only just hitting it's stride, and yet the PS5 is realistically no more than 3 years away...

As an early adopter that's exciting, but at the end of the day it's all about the games and it's only now the PS4 has the userbase it does that we are seeing those AA and more niche titles being released en masse - that's what is making this quarter such an incredible quarter, not the AAA releases.

I just can't bare the thought of only 2 more years of this before starting all over again with a userbase of zero, leaving those AA devs behind and relying on mediocre annual releases of sports franchises and Ubisoft open worlds and at most one or two big Sony first parties 6 months apart.

If focusing on 60fps/4K on the PS5 and allowing the PS4, or at least the PS4 Pro, to run PS5 games at 30fps/1080p with some bells and whistles turned off would mean an effective userbase of PS4+PS5 from day one, we could perhaps transition to the next gen without having to suffer any gaming droughts? In fact, there might be a bigger install base than ever for devs, meaning even more games than at the end of the PS4's lifecycle?

tl;dr I love Nioh and Gravity Rush and I don't want to have to wait until 3 years into the PS5's lifespan to get games like that.

No, BC all the way, but no to holding PS5 back like this. Console generations are good for consumers, do not give them up.

Definitely not. PS4 and Pro supporting all the same games makes sense, but the next generation needs to be free of all such restrictions and be allowed to reach its full potential. That means games that cannot possibly run on the current consoles. The PS5 needs to be a significantly larger leap vs the Pro than the Pro was vs the PS4, or I'll be really disappointed.

That sounds like you are being forced to upgrade even though you might not want to.

That's the way it's been since the dawn of the hobby. You're not forced to do anything. Just don't expect to keep playing the latest releases on the same hardware without buying a successor.

PS5/XB2 should be its own thing but cross-gen games will be massive regardless. Even more so than the start of this gen, so we don't really need a restriction like this in place.

ps4 hardware will be stone age stuff by the time ps5 hits

that said it would be nice if devs had the option for certain games. especially if next gen starts like this one where everything is essentially cross gen or remasters

Like others have said that would give no reason for people to buy as PS5. People would still just get the PS Slim for 200 honestly if the games are on there

No.

New generations should have no compromises.

I'm ok with the Pro being a thing exactly because i want the Ps5 to be its own thing.

That said, since the jump from PS4 to PS5 will feature a similar or same architecture, i expect the first one or two years to be filled with cross-gen 1st party titles, but with less holding back the features for the new consoles opposed to the previous transition.

Oh, and BC will be a thing, maybe we'll see less 3rd party cross-gen games and more titles that will offer "boost mode" when played on the new console.

No way. They'd have to dumb games down. I hated how games at the start of this gen released on both PS3/PS4 for such a long time. The PS4's power wasn't being fully utilised.

Sony's next console should be a "PS4 Pro Plus" so it can run PS4 games but the difference being it branded as a PS5 and have exclusive games that take advantage of the extra power.

I really hope the PS5 is a massive difference in the way you play games and interact with the community. So in that sense i hope that the ps5 games is something that you can't just easily support on the ps4/ps4pro. If all the ps5 games are just being able to see everything a bit more clearly then whats the point of upgrading if you are already satisfied with ps4 like graphics. What i would like are controllers that make it feel more immersive when you explore a world. A combination of dualshock, mouse, and joycons with an accessory cellphone like keyboard for social media/remote.

Fair point, but people said the PS4 would last a decade, now everyone is talking about the PS5 in 2019.

If I was a dev I would be sick to death of this shit.

It will last a decade, just like the PS2 and PS3 did.

No one said it would be on the only Sony hardware on the market for 10 years.

When I buy a laptop now, I expect to be able to run games released in 5 years time with graphical settings turned down. I do, and it's fine, and when I upgrade my laptop I play the same game on such higher settings that I don't feel short changed.

If PC gaming reset it's install base to zero every 6 years I doubt it would be a flourishing scene.

Now, sure. But buy a new laptop on the eve of the release of windows 11 and you won't know if that thing will be able to run Windows 13 6 years down the line.

PS4 games will still be on sales in 6 years, but PS5 game will require a PS5, otherwise, they'd just be PS4 games.
