It sounds like backwards compatibility is more or less a given with the PS5, after the precedent set by the PS4 Pro and the lack of any real technical challenge given the architecture being used.
But how about forward compatibility?
I feel like this gen is really only just hitting it's stride, and yet the PS5 is realistically no more than 3 years away...
As an early adopter that's exciting, but at the end of the day it's all about the games and it's only now the PS4 has the userbase it does that we are seeing those AA and more niche titles being released en masse - that's what is making this quarter such an incredible quarter, not the AAA releases.
I just can't bare the thought of only 2 more years of this before starting all over again with a userbase of zero, leaving those AA devs behind and relying on mediocre annual releases of sports franchises and Ubisoft open worlds and at most one or two big Sony first parties 6 months apart.
If focusing on 60fps/4K on the PS5 and allowing the PS4, or at least the PS4 Pro, to run PS5 games at 30fps/1080p with some bells and whistles turned off would mean an effective userbase of PS4+PS5 from day one, we could perhaps transition to the next gen without having to suffer any gaming droughts? In fact, there might be a bigger install base than ever for devs, meaning even more games than at the end of the PS4's lifecycle?
tl;dr I love Nioh and Gravity Rush and I don't want to have to wait until 3 years into the PS5's lifespan to get games like that.
