Agreed everything 100%. If Mendes' idea of making bond more memorable was a line or two about his childhood, then he failed badly. CR was so unpredictable but it was mostly because Bond kept thing uncertain and fresh because of his massive ego. Chasing a dude running through a maze? slam a bulldozer through it. Play it safe and secret? My last name's Bond. Gamble away your stake and funds blocked? Time to blow Americans' money. I don't think anyone can recreate that magic again but I had hope. Mendes approached the character more as a fanboy than as a visionary. Nothing fundamentally wrong with that, but the movie wasn't something I was expecting.I've seen almost all of the Bond films and I'll be honest, I'm tired and bored of the old Bond. In all of his old movies he's just there doing stuff, finishing the mission, getting the girls. And if i recall correctly, no character arc and no conflicts. He's personality is as bland as it gets. He's just there for every other guy to project himself and live the male fantasy, drink, being a womanizer, getting awesome gadgets, travelling around the world, defeating everything that comes his way and getting more girls. I know I shouldn't make this comparison but it kinda reminds me of Bella Swan and the girls obsessed with twilight because they want to be her. Maybe that kind of thing worked some decades ago, I'm not sure if it still works. At least, I'm sick of it. I don't know if I've just outgrown Bond if there's such a thing, but I can't get excited about that shallow character in his formulaic adventures.
CR was a huge breath of fresh air, the script was amazing, Bond had conflicts! Bond had a journey! Bond had a *gasp* deeper personality! YEY!! It's one of my favorite movies. I absolutely love it. It always scared me, though, the thought about the future. What would they do next? will they return bond to his old boring self?? will the next movies have that formulaic as a cooking recipe plot? Will Bond girls become a meaningless sex toy as they've always been?
Well, Skyfall is the answer and Bond is as boring as ever. Don't get me wrong, the movie is fun, it's a decent movie with amazing cinematography. There are some stunningly beautiful shots, something rare for an action movie. But Bond as a character is slowly returning to his old boring self. I know, some people would say "That's because the character's supposed to be like that, idiot!", but I had hope that things would change. The producers have acknowledged a thousand times that CR had that success and amazing critical reception because of the things they changed, because it was a personal and emotional journey. When Sam Mendes talked about what made CR such a good movie, he mentioned all of this and maybe more. The sad part is that those are precisely the things his film lacks. Bond's written like if it was the old one, the only consequences his actions have are in terms of plot. He's there just to move the plot. And that's the only thing Mendes and the writers got right, the plot. It's not formulaic, i thought it was even kind of unpredictable on the first two acts, but that's it. I've seen a lot people loving this, and maybe that's just me, but as I've said a couple of times, I don't get any sense of character or emotion in the film, only plot.
I was expecting a new Bond for the new century, they're giving me the old Bond with a new facade. Yes, I was also expecting a character arc and at least I didn't see one. He went through a lot, he -died-, returned, was kidnapped by Silva, went to his house, saw M dying, but nothing really mattered for him. It's been said a lot that it's a personal movie because of the house and everything, yeah, they went to his old house, but how is it personal when the only consequence of going there is a big action set piece?
I know I won't be excited for the next film. In my eyes, they fucked up twice, first QoS, now with Skyfall. My Bond excitement that was derived from CR is a thing of the past. They're going back to the classic Bond and that's not for me anymore. I'm kind of surprised that some people in this day and age still want that.

Casino Royale is the only awesome Bond movie.
Vesper is the only meaningful Bond girl.
Eva Green is so fucking beautiful.
The initial comparison was with TDK not TDKR!
I'm shaking my head yes at this postAgreed everything 100%. If Mendes' idea of making bond more memorable was a line or two about his childhood, then he failed badly. Hell lot better than Quantum of Poop though, and Deakins is a lock for Oscar.
Went to a karaoke place and they had Skyfall. Best song of the night.
Last Wednesday I was at work and suddenly the Skyfall song was on the radio. It was a really cool moment but I'm always carrying the soundtrack on my cellphone, so I can listen to it whenever I want.Fun fact: Two nights in a row as I was driving home from work late, Skyfall came on the radio in my car at the same time each night. Made the thirty minute drive home that much greater.
Agreed. The Spy Who Loved me is largely underrated.I agree, but just very recently rewatched For Your Eyes Only, and man, I knew it wouldn't hold up, but the first hour of that thing is just ugly and gross. Amazingly stupid, too. Spy Who Loved Me is the best Roger Moore Bond, easily. I thought For Your Eyes Only was a close second - but it's not.
I'd probably swap Dr. No for Thunderball, too.
Swap For Your Eyes Only with The Spy Who Loved Me and add Dr. No and Goldeneye. From Russia With Love

LOL just noticed Richard Branson was in CR
He's there for a split second and blurry.

This shot was removed from the version of the film that went to all airlines (except Virgin).

Earlier in this thread, there was discussion as to whether there'd be a Bond reunion at the Oscars, with myself going so far as to say there's no way it WOULDN'T happen, as it was just a matter of writing Connery a big enough check.
Guess who got that shit super-wrong.
So no - no Bond reunion onstage at the Oscars. But Shirley Bassey will be singing "Goldfinger" at some point.
My shiny skyfall steelbook is waiting for me at the post office right now.

Yeah I won't be getting mine until 2-3 days but it's fine.My copy sadly didn't come today.
It was dispatched on the 16th, but apparently I won't be getting it till the 21st.
Bah!
Its really nice. I've had steel boxes before that were just cheap shit.
This feels like proper quality. DVD quality is great too; specially the sound.
Agreed. The Spy Who Loved me is largely underrated
You weren't kidding. Quite a stylish steelbook and video quality isn't too shabby. Now if only I could find an uncut version of Casino Royale Deluxe edition somewhere. I would've picked up the steelbook of Goldeneye but I heard the video quality on the blu-ray isn't great. I'll stick with my Ultimate edition DVD instead.
Was I the only one cheering when M punched out? She has annoyed the shit out of me since she took the position in Pierce Brosnan era.

Saw it again. What a ridiculous movie. Bardem is the only good thing about it.
According to the reviews I read, Goldeneye received a heavy dose of digital-noise reduction.
I made a thread about it a couple days back. Keez makes the best montages. His Spielberg one is stellar.
