And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Just got the movie... think I'm gonna cry T_T

I watched the movie last night on Blu Ray. The movie really dragged for way too long. I was semi bored with it by the time it was over. Nice set ups for future films in the series though!

I liked the throwbacks to the old Bond with the ejection seat and machine guns popping out of the Aston Martin. Javier played a great poor man's Joker but he was a little too late to the party to bring the movie back from the dead for me. He should have been in the very first scene and carried throughout. He was a great character that wasn't explored nearly enough for my liking.

Casino Royal - 9
Skyfall - 7
Quantum of Shit - 4 (The opening car chase was the best part of the movie)

Just saw it. Fourth time, this time on Blu-ray.

Forget me saying that it's just as good as CR. It's better. Mother of God.

I've seen almost all of the Bond films and I'll be honest, I'm tired and bored of the old Bond. In all of his old movies he's just there doing stuff, finishing the mission, getting the girls. And if i recall correctly, no character arc and no conflicts. He's personality is as bland as it gets. He's just there for every other guy to project himself and live the male fantasy, drink, being a womanizer, getting awesome gadgets, travelling around the world, defeating everything that comes his way and getting more girls. I know I shouldn't make this comparison but it kinda reminds me of Bella Swan and the girls obsessed with twilight because they want to be her. Maybe that kind of thing worked some decades ago, I'm not sure if it still works. At least, I'm sick of it. I don't know if I've just outgrown Bond if there's such a thing, but I can't get excited about that shallow character in his formulaic adventures.

CR was a huge breath of fresh air, the script was amazing, Bond had conflicts! Bond had a journey! Bond had a *gasp* deeper personality! YEY!! It's one of my favorite movies. I absolutely love it. It always scared me, though, the thought about the future. What would they do next? will they return bond to his old boring self?? will the next movies have that formulaic as a cooking recipe plot? Will Bond girls become a meaningless sex toy as they've always been?

Well, Skyfall is the answer and Bond is as boring as ever. Don't get me wrong, the movie is fun, it's a decent movie with amazing cinematography. There are some stunningly beautiful shots, something rare for an action movie. But Bond as a character is slowly returning to his old boring self. I know, some people would say "That's because the character's supposed to be like that, idiot!", but I had hope that things would change. The producers have acknowledged a thousand times that CR had that success and amazing critical reception because of the things they changed, because it was a personal and emotional journey. When Sam Mendes talked about what made CR such a good movie, he mentioned all of this and maybe more. The sad part is that those are precisely the things his film lacks. Bond's written like if it was the old one, the only consequences his actions have are in terms of plot. He's there just to move the plot. And that's the only thing Mendes and the writers got right, the plot. It's not formulaic, i thought it was even kind of unpredictable on the first two acts, but that's it. I've seen a lot people loving this, and maybe that's just me, but as I've said a couple of times, I don't get any sense of character or emotion in the film, only plot.

I was expecting a new Bond for the new century, they're giving me the old Bond with a new facade. Yes, I was also expecting a character arc and at least I didn't see one. He went through a lot, he -died-, returned, was kidnapped by Silva, went to his house, saw M dying, but nothing really mattered for him. It's been said a lot that it's a personal movie because of the house and everything, yeah, they went to his old house, but how is it personal when the only consequence of going there is a big action set piece?

I know I won't be excited for the next film. In my eyes, they fucked up twice, first QoS, now with Skyfall. My Bond excitement that was derived from CR is a thing of the past. They're going back to the classic Bond and that's not for me anymore. I'm kind of surprised that some people in this day and age still want that.

-------------
Casino Royale is the only awesome Bond movie.
Vesper is the only meaningful Bond girl.
Eva Green is so fucking beautiful.
The initial comparison was with TDK not TDKR!
Agreed everything 100%. If Mendes' idea of making bond more memorable was a line or two about his childhood, then he failed badly. CR was so unpredictable but it was mostly because Bond kept thing uncertain and fresh because of his massive ego. Chasing a dude running through a maze? slam a bulldozer through it. Play it safe and secret? My last name's Bond. Gamble away your stake and funds blocked? Time to blow Americans' money. I don't think anyone can recreate that magic again but I had hope. Mendes approached the character more as a fanboy than as a visionary. Nothing fundamentally wrong with that, but the movie wasn't something I was expecting.

Hell lot better than Quantum of Poop though, and Deakins is a lock for Oscar.

I'm shaking my head yes at this post

I just watched this movie for the first time the other night. It was pretty good and I enjoyed it but I don't think I understand the hype. I definitely enjoyed Casino Royale more.

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
Just finished it.

I liked Casino Royale more. The whole thing with 007 not passing the tests, and the "sometimes the old ways are best" line annoyed me.

Overall, I found the movie sort of boring. For some positivity, the shaving scene was cool, because I think I noticed an Edwin Jagger brush.

I watched Lockout last night on Netflix, a film I also ranked a 7, and I enjoyed it more than Skyfall. It's clearly an inferior movie on so many levels, but damn it was fun to watch which is something future Bond movies should keep in mind.

Fun fact: Two nights in a row as I was driving home from work late, Skyfall came on the radio in my car at the same time each night. Made the thirty minute drive home that much greater.
Last Wednesday I was at work and suddenly the Skyfall song was on the radio. It was a really cool moment but I'm always carrying the soundtrack on my cellphone, so I can listen to it whenever I want.

I agree, but just very recently rewatched For Your Eyes Only, and man, I knew it wouldn't hold up, but the first hour of that thing is just ugly and gross. Amazingly stupid, too. Spy Who Loved Me is the best Roger Moore Bond, easily. I thought For Your Eyes Only was a close second - but it's not.

I'd probably swap Dr. No for Thunderball, too.
Agreed. The Spy Who Loved me is largely underrated.

From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
For Your Eyes Only
The Living Daylights
Casino Royale
Swap For Your Eyes Only with The Spy Who Loved Me and add Dr. No and Goldeneye.

LOL just noticed Richard Branson was in CR

He's there for a split second and blurry.

Earlier in this thread, there was discussion as to whether there'd be a Bond reunion at the Oscars, with myself going so far as to say there's no way it WOULDN'T happen, as it was just a matter of writing Connery a big enough check.

Guess who got that shit super-wrong.

So no - no Bond reunion onstage at the Oscars. But Shirley Bassey will be singing "Goldfinger" at some point.

I liked how it all slowed down towards the third act, and then a whole lot of kablammy boom boom, which is expected from a James Bond flick. And man, it was pretty when it did it. Deakins needs to win the oscar.

Too bad for
Severine
. The character gets killed, a little action, the film plays the iconic score, Bond says something snarky, everyone forgets about the fresh corpse. Bond probably celebrated with a shaken martin right there on the spot.

Also Moneypenny was pretty hot.

Carly Simon singing Nobody Does It Better has to be part of that segment.

Its really nice. I've had steel boxes before that were just cheap shit.
This feels like proper quality. DVD quality is great too; specially the sound.

You weren't kidding. Quite a stylish steelbook and video quality isn't too shabby. Now if only I could find an uncut version of Casino Royale Deluxe edition somewhere. I would've picked up the steelbook of Goldeneye but I heard the video quality on the blu-ray isn't great. I'll stick with my Ultimate edition DVD instead.

It shouldn't be. It deserves more love.

According to the reviews I read, Goldeneye received a heavy dose of digital-noise reduction.

Finally watched this last weekend and I still recall the media praising it and saying it's the best Bond movie ever,.. blah blah...

Well, I don't think it's the best Bond movie ever and I don't even think it's the best Craig Bond movie ever. Casino Royale was better. The plot was very into how old everyone was and how oldfashioned Bond was. That's fine but it dragged on for so long.
I really liked the vilain and his laid back attitude. "Why all this running and jumping around? It's exhausting!" Was semi disappointed about no real epic last showdown.

Was I the only one cheering when M punched out? She has annoyed the shit out of me since she took the position in Pierce Brosnan era. And a whole new crew at MI6? I'm ok with that. Daniel Craig has 1 more Bond movie to go right?

I just had total indifference. I cared about Silva. M felt like a nazi general to me compared to him.

I finished watching Quantum of Solace for the first time since seeing it in theaters back in 2008, so I've watched all twenty-three Bond films. I had lukewarm feelings towards QoS after I saw it the first time, but I enjoyed it a lot more after the second viewing. Perhaps it's because I really enjoy the series now more than I did the first time I saw it? Anyway, it really doesn't deserve the amount of hate it receives. It's a quality Bond film, and while it didn't reach the level of Casino Royale it's still one of the top-ten films in the series.

As for ranking the films, it's difficult for me because the older ones are different compared to the modern ones, but I enjoyed them all. For example, Casino Royale is great, but I also really love The Spy Who Loved Me despite how different in tone it is. Therefore, I'll just rank them in order of release.

1. From Russia with Love
2. Goldfinger
3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
4. The Spy Who Loved Me
5. The Living Daylights
6. Tomorrow Never Dies
7. Casino Royale
8. Quantum of Solace
9. Skyfall
10. ??? I also enjoyed Thunderball, For Your Eyes Only, and honestly Die Another Day. I know it's a bad movie, but it's just so ridiculous and stupid that I actually enjoyed it. Maybe having my expectations set as low as they could go before viewing it helped. The terrible special effects are funnier than the horrible one-liners. Although I think The World is Not Enough wins for having most awful one-liners.

Theme Song Ranking:
1. Nobody Does It Better
2. A View To A Kill
3. Live and Let Die
4. The World is Not Enough
5. Thunderball
6. You Know My Name
7. Goldfinger
8. The Living Daylights
9. The Man with the Golden Gun
10. You Only Live Twice

Guilty Pleasure: Die Another Day

Bond Ranking:
1. Sean Connery
2. Timothy Dalton
3. Daniel Craig
4. Pierce Brosnan
5. Roger Moore
6. George Lazenby

Got an email from Amazon France saying that my steelbook's shipped. They're estimating that it'll arrive on the 14th of March, but I'm hoping I'll get it sooner - like I do with my Amazon UK stuff.

The steelbook is very nice and the blu ray looks and sounds incredible. I checked out the dvd to see the difference in the picture quality, and the dvd looks like a youtube video in comparison.

I just rewatched the intro credits to the movie and did anyone catch what could possibly be a reference to Silva before he went rogue? It's the segment right before Adele goes "where you go I go" and in that sequence it looks like someone is strapped to a chair and shaking and their head is tilted back with their mouth open. Idk that part reminds me of when Silva said he took the cyanide pill while in captivity.
