Skyrim Switch Trailer (Link amiibo support)

It's always very impressive seeing good looking games running on the Switch but it shouldn't be terribly surprising to those paying attention. Mobile technology has come a very, very long way in a short amount of time, and it might be worth remembering that the tech used by the Switch is only 2.5 years old, whereas the PS4 and XB1 are already 3.5 years old and the tech in them is even older than that.

Obviously on a raw power scale the Switch doesn't reach those levels, but modern features can make up for a lot of the missing grunt.
People also seem to ignore it's a 400GFLOP machine with double FP16 rate on an architecture that sees a 1.3 TFLOP card consistently match/beat the 1.8TFLOP PS4. (750 Ti)
And considering modern games are defined by post-processing effects and lighting that can be run at FP16, it really should be no surprise that the little machine punches above its weight.

I feel like I'm going crazy.

I've never played Skyrim, but I know what it looks like, and that clearly looks much more the Special Edition/remaster than vanilla Skyrim on 360.

Since the Switch reveal video, it looked like the remastered version. I thought after this trailer, people would see that once and for all.

Yet this thread has so many people saying it's plain old Skyrim, and it looks terrible.

Take a look at the standing stones (the stonehenge-like construction) at 0:06 in the Switch trailer, and compare with the footage from the original game (1:16): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5YwHVQGShc

Edit: Another bit of footage, though the angle is quite different (1:12): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8pzHXxSf4c

Edit 2: This one recreates the Switch trailer almost perfectly at 2:52 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5IqLOIewo4

What's being shown in the trailer seems like remastered footage to me.

k

thanks for all the responses everyone!

That worked so well on Steam Workshop.

To be fair, it seems like a much better implementation where Bethesda works directly with modders to create new content. No repackaged existing mods, and Bethesda's hands on approach should eliminate paid mods that use free mods as a base or framework.

Makes me wonder if this is even Switch footage. It looked pretty much like the legendary edition, so no idea about what people claiming it's ugly are talking about.

You mean Special Edition I think. Legendary edition is just the original version with all DLC packed in (released on PS3/XB360/PC).

Is interesting that this is the second most viewed E3 trailer on Bethesda channel, only under Wolfenstein 2 and reactions seems pretty positive.

Sure looks like people are interested, I hope this will sell well on Switch and Bethesda will port more games in future.

That's really weird. Maybe Nintendo asked them to make it 60fps but standard? I'd honestly take 60fps version of vanilla Skyrim over legendary edition at 30fps.

The Switch gameplay in the trailer is strange: the first few seconds (full screen) are 30fps locked, the next section until full screen Link footage is ~24 fps, then the Link bit is 60 fps, and after that the gameplay is 30 fps but with frame pacing issues.

The music is bizarre and I'm disappointed that the Link stuff is locked behind amiibo nonsense but I'm looking forward to dipping back in (eventually)

All of the parts showing the actual console are likely 24 fps due to it being a camera, but yeah the full screen parts being 30 and 60 are kinda strange.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 60fps in handheld mode with some fairly reduced settings and 30fps docked. The CPU stays at the same clock rate so a higher framerate could be more doable undocked than docked.

Or it's just PC target footage and they goofed the framerate for some reason.

I'm pretty sure that's the case.

On the topic of framerate, it's very weird. Going through various points frame by frame and it's exactly how it appears. The full screen part from 0:23 to 0:31 showing off the Zelda gear is definitely 60fps but everything else is 30fps.

This really raises the question, how much of this trailer was actually switch footage and which parts? I'd assume most of the trailer was stock footage of Skyrim SE but that can't adequately explain why the part explicitly showing off exclusive switch content was running twice the framerate (you'd think it's be the other way around). It doesn't appear to be sped up as far as I can tell, so I'm thinking it may actually be footage from the PC/master build version.

Either that or Bethesda found the Pikmin.

Edit: Oops beaten to the punch.

Going through the footage frame by frame, I'm pretty sure the bit after Link is not 24 fps from filming footage, as sometimes two frames occur one frame after the other on a 60 Hz refresh rate, while at other points it takes 3 frames to get to a new frame. Could be goofed PC target footage, though.

I'd love to see a portable Fallout 4 or maybe if they ported over some of their older games.

Oblivion remaster!

Will I enjoy this game if I played Breath of the Wild?

Newcomer here and first time I played a Bethesda game ever.

The biggest thing about The Elder Scrolls games is exploration: you are released into the wild pretty quickly and can do whatever and go wherever you want. You can role play as a bandit, killing innocents and fighting guards, or explore the wildlands or do anything else. If you like that type of freedoom, then Skyrim will be fun. The combat mechanics are not that great, so if you get a most of your enjoyment out of those in BOTW, then this might not be for you.

You'll enjoy it if you like exploration just keep in mind that this is more of an rpg that BOTW. Combat is fairly disappointing as well. I'd say play it for the exploration and rpg aspects which are OK to decent. You really get to mold your character how you see fit.

It's very different in a lot of ways. The similarities probably start and end with the feeling of exploration and freedom.

Skyrim has a much bigger quest variety, and a lot more loot. It's a full on RPG (though dumbed down quite a bit from Morrowind/Daggerfall) rather than an adventure-RPG like BotW is, so you have stats, skills with skill points and perk paths, traditional warrior/mage/thief archetypes (though you can mix and match in any way) etc...

Probably the biggest difference is that the majority of Skyrim's quests and game as a whole takes place in interior locations like tombs, caves, forts, etc... whereas BotW is all about the actual world.

My biggest beef with the original implementation were dirtbags passing off mods as their own that the creator wanted to keep free/sell themselves.

This should fix that issue.

Skyrim/TES combat is terrible and boring, motion controls might actually add a lot.

After playing Skyrim in 4K I can't go back though.

Called it, no way they'd drop an untouched Skyrim on to the switch with out some kind of motion controls with BotW existing. Will finally play this game and see what the hype is about.

What if they chose to make it just Skyrim and not Special Edition so they could leave the graphics as is but have it 60fps? It's probably not that but it's nice to have dreams.

I'm going to quote myself:

It's clear it's not the original version but the remaster version.

Looks great! Motion controls look like a fun option to play with too. Funny song choice but I guess even I'm sick of the Skyrim theme now.

Also, called it!

Yep, this is exactly what I'm thinking too. Skyrim is a reliably profitable franchise, and Nintendo is all about making licensing deals with third party partners lately. Plus, Howard keeps talking about what a great "partner" Nintendo has been with Bethesda lately. I would bet this is why he can't confirm if it's the original Skyrim or the special edition. It's neither one.

We're going to see Zelda content, probably a special Epona horse and Master Sword, Hero's Tunic and other extras. I'm positive.

Granted that's not the hero's tunic in the trailer, but I wouldn't be surprised if other Amiibo unlock other outfits.

so its safe to assume this wont be receiving mod support (if its even as bad as the ps4 version)?
because if they confirm mod support (like xbo) for this game i'd buy it again at full price.
