Small quirks in great games that bug the shit out of you.

Having Twilight Princess explain what blue, gold and red rupees are everytime I play gets really annoying. Also in the dungeons when I get to chest thinking it may be a small key and it ends up being some rupees that I can't fit in my wallet.

Poor looking guns/hands in first person shooters. If you spent the whole game in this perspective, and an element which is ALWAYS present on screen looks terrible in motion, it really ends up detracting from said experience. FEAR is a great example of what I'm talking about.

It also exhibits another problem which annoys me and that is a lack of weight in character movement.

Took the words out of my mouth.

As far as FOV, animation, feedback, and even modeling go, Counter-Strike is still my favorite, but Rainbow Six Vegas comes very close.

Along these lines, not seeing your feet in FPS'.

The horrible pitch textures in PES/WE. They were fine in WE6/PES2, but when they switched their graphics engine, they started to look horrible. It totally takes away from the visual appeal.

To warp in Twilight Princess, you got changed automatically into wolf form. Also, you couldn't always change back into Link right away in some places you land. That was pretty annoying. I also agree with the previous poster who mentioned the rupee explanation each time you revisited the game.

Another quirk is in Megaman X Collection, which didn't save any controls you might have changed.

In Tomb Raider: Legend (at least on the 360), if you had your flashlight on when the cinema starts, it'll stay on during the cinema. A nice touch to some degree, but I would've liked to be able to turn it off when it's distracting. But what's more irritating is the cinema time counts toward the "battery," and if it runs out of juice during the cinema (which it invariably will), instead of the usual sound, it causes some sort of error sound to repeatedly play until it turns off. Annoying, and I'm not sure why they didn't try to patch it on at least the 360 (and maybe the Xbox).

Also, I've been playing Kameo a bit lately (gift), and it bugs me that it's picky about how close up you are to things when you try to transform, instead of just pushing you back a bit to make room. And the jumping is very awkward, for Kameo and the few creatures that can do it. Couldn't some of the forms at least be able to climb up these ledges, then?

Context sensitive A button in 3D Zeldas... I've frequently "rolled" when I meant to "pick up"... annoying.
Ugh, so true. And rolling is pretty much worthless, to boot. I also hate repositioning by a milimeter so that an item will be recognized. There's a whole bunch of awkwardness with controlling Link that needs to go away in the next 3D Zelda.

I was actually going to mention terranigma. Like when you run (which has way too few frames of animation) and you run into a wall, you don't here until a fraction of a second later.

Ogre Battle: equipping nothing as the only way to unequip something.

Snake repeating EVERYTHING and adding a question mark to the end of it

:lol So true... he does do that. "The new weapon is Metal Gear" "...Metal.....Gear.........?"

You'd think that by the 23rd top secret solo infiltration mission involving taking out a revolutionary bipedal nuclear-equipped tank, he'd kind of get a sense for predicting this sort of thing.

Amen.

And to add my own (both Zelda and MGS). Saving at a point, but not being able to restart at that point when the game is reloaded. Instead restarting at the beginning of the section, or in Zelda's case, the beginning of the whole level. Thank Jenova for Ooccoo, though.

1. FFXII = un-invertable camera... not a small quirk, dumbest decision ever

2. Okami = filter over the screen making it look "dirty", slow text, load times for EVERYTHING grrr

3. Lost Planet = why no 1-1 gun aim? what moron decided to do that?

4. Zelda WW = damn wind changing crap, the sailing would have been fine if it were just like more practical to change the wind direction

5. FFX = Tidus' voice

6. Zelda OOT = stupid chant in the fire temple, most offensive thing EVAR

7. Shadow of the Colossus = sometimes next to impossible to move around because of camera and controls, frame rate contributes to that

8. Mario Kart 64 = freaking moronic 5 second animation whenever you get hit, someone with three shells just moves up, waits, shoots again, you are f'ed

9. Gran Turismo 3 = the sense of speed (or lack thereof)

10. Medal of Honor = the clipping issue (you can never hit the damn soldier until after like 3-4 shots)

11. PD Zero = the horrible aiming/unstable analog controls

12. Devil May Cry = the lack of 3d movement mapped to the analogue stick ala Mario 64

13. KOTOR = the frame rate

14. Super Mario Sunshine = FLUDD, 'nough said

15. Gears of War = no 4-player split screen

16. Metroid Prime = scanning, 'nough said

17. Unreal Tournament = the physics... terrible... Quake FTW

18. Sim City 4 = endless micromanagement, no way to delegate those tasks to the computer and focus on the bigger picture and connect cities together and manage inter-city commerce

19. MGS2 = Raiden

20. DOA4 = button mashers can win

21. Ico = confusing level design at times, making you wonder WTF to do

22. Mortal Kombat = block button... WHY? Just WHY?

23. Madden = why no 4 player mode?

24. Anything by NST = art sucks

25. NES Zeldas = save system didn't necessarily work correctly, you end up losing all your stats

I think that about covers it fairly across all systems, developers and generations ;-)

In counterstrike I used to not be able to stand the sound of the AK firing. It hurt my ears, it was like nails on a chalkboard. It still irritates me a little.

Any physics based stuff in games which aren't implemented properly. Instead, it makes every object move like it was made out of styrofoam.

One thing in old games which seem to be going in the right direction since Tomb Raider Legend is the block pushing puzzles. I'd like to move diagonally, thanks.

Twilight princess: As someone mentioned about bug log, I need some kind of indication about poes. It's no fun randomly searching NO place looking for something that might not be there. I prefer the OoT method with the Skulltulas, which gave you icons for that part of the world map if you found all the skulltulas in it (and I think it only gave you them if you had completed the game.

No save point after the game finsihes in TP.

Trying to find poe souls, but having them only appear at night...and having NO way to change the day system. I missed this so much in TP. Therefore both Windwaker and OoT are better than TP.

"Please point your remote at the screen". (applies to any wii game). Maybe I sit too close.
So true. I gave up on the poe search because I didn't feel like waiting until for night to fall. How could they not put in a method for changing the time of day when it had been in all the 3D Zeldas prior?

Guitar Hero (1 and 2): Not being able to view the high scores in Quickplay without going through the whole song. I can understand the oversight in the first one, but the fact that it wasn't fixed in the sequel amazes me.

twilight princess is full of little annoyances, but the wallet is the big one for me. unless i find some way to clear it out periodically, i'm unable to collect the contents of most hidden chests, which just drives me nuts. if that money just disappeared it'd be less irritating than leaving it in the chest.

i also hate that bugs you've already collected remain visible on the field. that whole bug quest is moronic.

1. Game that make you watch dialogue scenes again after you die.

2. Marcus in GOW is no help at all.

3. The lack of support for TDU.

I am playing through Suikoden V right now, the thing I absolutely loath are the "Now Loading" screens. They are everywhere!

This is one game that would have been even better installed to the harddrive!

Otherwise great game.

NHL 07 XBox 360:
-The AI on your team going offsides as offten as they possibly can
-The goal tender putting the puck into his own net with his own stick after making a save (happens at least once per game on Pro level, much less on All Star or Super Star)
-Getting stuck in an animation while skating backwards and not being able to skate where you want
-The pass button being the same as the switch player button

That said, GOD what a fun game. I haven't bought a sports game since NHL 94, but NHL 07 has forced me to give EA money. :\ Skill Stick is my new god!

Just going to repeat what other people said about Okami in bold.

THE "CANVAS" LOOK IN OKAMI IS HORSESHIT. WHY DID THEY NOT ALLOW A OPTION TO TURN IT OFF?

Oh yeah, and MGS: Portable Ops. I understand that the decision to give you a behind the character camera for the re-release of MGS3 was a good idea, with the much bigger outdoor environments and with the dual shock controller it only made sense. But why is it in Portable Ops? We reverted back to a non-dual analogue control, and we're back running around camp sites and buildings. This game could of been a thousand times better if it went back to the classic over-head camera.

Oh, and all 3rd person camera games that forces you to constantly babysit the camera stick. **** that.

you have some legitimate qualms there... Like you said, the loose pucks put in by goalies happens a lot less on all-star (what I play in)...
I would like to see a better fighting system and the frequency of types of penaties called made better.

I love this game as well.... There isn't another sports game on the market that makes me love going through a 6 game losing streak as I just did. I feel like this is the first game in a long time where I am literally having to fight for my point totals to try to make the playoffs.... So Awesome... this game kicks NHL2k7 to the curb for simulation and fun factor (believe me, I have had both games, and started out with NHL2k7 for a long time)....

In Ico, on my first run through, I inadvertantly missed seeing the stick at the beginning. How was I supposed to know I HAD to go back a screen?
I seriously wrote a rant about how much the game blows, but then I started over and stumbled across it on accident (there was a spot early on wit a block puzzle that was doable, but beyond that, you went outside. Im-freakin-possible to cross the area with the flying shadowmen without a weapon.)

Also, any game with/based around "save the helpless princess type character/escort the moron by grabbing their hand and pulling them everywhere you go (Ico and RE4 come to mind). I absolutely dispise any time a game throws escorting into a critical part of the gameplay.

Unskippable story scenes in The Godfather. Also, akward weapon controls kinda ruin the fun.

Not being able to jump in a 3D adventure/shooter game (post N64 era, it was forgivable then with certain FPS games, but seriously, it's not forgivable any more)

A certain tactics rpg about Phantoms that makes you Brave a bunch of battles only to find out you need more Phantoms in your party, thus making you Brave the EXACT SAME BATTLES for another 20 hours. :\

1) Your stupid cut scenes did nothing for the game, despite what you say. Making them un-skippable to force players to 'enjoy' the story is a asscock move.

2) Your whole hitpoint system was broken. If you shot a bad guy during his stagger animation the shot wouldn't register. Therefore you could either unload 2 clips from an AK into him, or take 4 shots staggered over 10 seconds or so.

So screw you Alex Ward.
