Not really, but Amazon does give authors certain benefits for staying exclusive to Kindle (better promotion, higher royalties etc)

Think of kindle as an app store for books. Anyone can publish their novels there, and you get a certain percentage for every book sold.

You should man. As far as I'm concerned anyone with money problems should atleast explore this avenue. You barely need anything to start with. In fact, I don't even type anymore. Swype for android has an amazing voice recognition engine based on Dragon.

Do you do your own proofreading and editing? How does that work? Legitimately interested...

Let's just say not enough for the bullshit I put up with.

For example, in a recent email altercation with an employee where I sent out a pretty fleshed out instructional guide on how to add a macro to a Word document, this was Step #2:

Hit Escape and click the File tab on the far left. Choose Options on the bottom left.

To which I received the response:

where is the escape and file tab, is it on the word doc?

This isn't the first time this person has asked me where the escape is. One day I will tell her what the only real escape would be.

Back when I first started I did the editing myself. Now that I've got some funds I usually do one of two things. Either I hire an external editor to polish things up or I go through AutoCrit to tighten up my writing.

These days though I'm putting more trust on my ghostwriters to make sure everything's up to snuff.

I take home $1400 a month, after benefits, retirement, taxes, etc. Highest I've ever been paid (25 years old). Wish I made more. :\

Around $1100 every two weeks, 35k a year. A wild amount of money compared to what I'm used to (12k last year before taxes). I can actually buy food when i'm hungry now!

It's weird though, this thread is still making me malcontent.

$3000 per month as a resident after insurance and taxes. Hopefully in six years when I'm done with residency It will be near $20000 a month after taxes. Thats only if healthcare reform doesn't continue its war against specialist salaries though.

radiology or surgery?

I get paid weekly now, contract work. About $1050 a week after taxes.

I've been spending WAY too much money this summer though. If I had a financial planner he would have jumped out of his office window by now. Meh, it's my first summer being single since 2009.

I probably should have seen this coming.

I keep telling myself that this is the week I'm going to buckle down, by the reality is

Monday - bar trivia
Tuesday - booking October flight to SF + Niners tix
Wednesday - grocery shopping
Thursday - boat cruise
Saturday - road trip

I still manage to put about $100 in savings every week but I should be banking a lot more. :/ Things will be better when the weather starts to suck again.

Amazing, haha.

I'm in the opposite boat. My pay is so much more than I'm used to that I don't know what to do with it. I'm probably going to save/invest most of it. My hobbies are really cheap, comparatively.

Why not just hire ghostwriters outright from creation to end and retain all the rights?

I prefer having control over my outlines, especially with my fantasy fiction. There's nothing wrong with handing over everything to the ghostwriter, but money is in writing multiple books and I like being able to decide the overall arc of the series.

On top of that, I usually do outlines for multiple books at a time. This usually takes no more than a week, and once I'm happy with the overall plot I send them over to my ghostwriters.

Around $800 after taxes as a long term substitute teacher.

Last year when I hit 40 days and my pay was increased to step one of the teacher salary scale it was about $1800 after taxes or so.

No insurance or benefits being taken out because I'm technically a per diem employee.

0.00 dollars. Broke unemployed college student. This is my last semester though so that should be rectified come January ( if I can find a job).

How much do you charge per book once it's on Amazon Kindle?

I make $600 every 2 weeks, but I get a free 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with all utilities paid for. We're still poor, but we've got what we need!

My wife is a wedding and portrait photographer and her business has taken off quite a bit so it looks like we're going to be ok. :)

It depends on what genre the book is. If it's a short story I might make it free or 0.99. If it's more than 20k I like to price it at 2.99. However, genres like erotica will let you get away with 10k books @ 2.99.

Best to do your own research and see what others are doing.

Amazon releases mine monthly, averaging about 12k. That's after getting 30% cut out, sucks a hard dick that Malaysia has no tax treaty with US. Thinking of moving back to England where withholding fee is a sweet 0%.

Good thing is I don't get taxed for any US made income in Malaysia, but that 30% is too much D:

Woah. Do you know if they do that for comics / graphic novels as well? I have one halfway done that I have no idea how to distribute.

Thanks for the info. I'll pass this info along to my sister because she writes all of the time and it seems like it would be a good secondary income for her.

690 or so :(

Oh wait, you guys are doing before taxes? My number is take home the actual payment I get to the old bank account

My husband - about $8,000 a month (if you don't include bonuses, PTO cash outs, benefits and such), me about $2,000 a month when full hours are worked. Every time I see what he makes compared to what I make, I throw up in my mouth just a little bit. I do get to work from home and be here for our kids though, so I add that to my win column.

After taxes, insurance and my paltry 401k contribution, $804 every two weeks

Madison, WI

Only counting vanilla salary ~2 mil yen a month. Can be rough depending on what the rates are and where I am.

A better idea would be to ask people to include the approximate area and city/county they live, or else some of these numbers are useless.

Well i get about 4000ish a month cut in half, so 2000ish i guess. I also get another 1800kish for BAH overseas but almost every cent goes into that... and I live in 1 bedroom apartment lol. Extra 200 a week right now because i'm helping some navy boys though weeeee

I'm single, don't pay child support, and I don't waste money so honestly it's good enough for me.

$2100 after taxes every two weeks. Plus bonus potential of 36k/year. Real take home is closer to $3100/month due to child support without any bonuses.

About $1k every two weeks right now after retirement and taxes. I've got an interview within my company that would add a few hundred bucks to that, which I desperately need if I'm ever going to move back into my own place and get a better handle on paying down my student debt.

$0.00 right now...

I guess I've done some Textbroker stuff, but having no income really sucks the life out of you. Shamefully leeching off parents at the moment.

Hey, I'll write a book for you!

You should right a book for yourself and make more money!

Start small, maybe a 10k short. Even the laziest person can do 10k within a month. Look at hot genres right now and see what's working. Copy them, right down to how they do covers. See if people pick it up. Build a fan base, create a mailing list, facebook twitter etc. Soon you'll be swimming in cash.

Me too. My wife's friend pulls over $9000 a month after taxes as a nurse so they gotta pull more than that.

Dem people drowning in money, Jesus lol

Sirap is extremely motivating lol.. Sirap do you need pictures inside the books at all? lol...

Plenty. Can't complain, just celebrated my 10th year anniversary at my job too. I hope I can squeeze 30 more years out of this place till retirement too. Although I am looking at buying a computer repair shop that's for sale in the area. Not sure if it would kill my love of fixing computers if I had to do it for a living. Hmm.

I try to avoid putting in photos in books. Amazon takes a cut from each sale based on how big the ebook file is.

Edit: heading to bed now, I'll bump this thread with proof of just how crazy lucrative indie publishing is when I wake up.
