While the AB Groupe didn't get the Calgary crew to dub the movies, they still dubbed. Just with the infamous Big Green people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TUo5qmckdQ

What? Goku's raid over the red ribbon army HQ was fucking epic.
By the way, the OST from dragon ball was on another level.
In the recent Vegeta thread, I pointed to this as a prime example of why fans in Japan likely preferred Goku and did not want to see whiny, crying Gohan become the main character. Similarly, Goku got wrecked by King Piccolo, got inside a hovercar with Yajirobe and immediately went to Korin to find a way to become stronger and overcome his adversary. In the same situation, Gohan would probably spend five episodes sorting out his emotions and building his courage to fight King Piccolo -- then another five doubting himself after any kind of setback or failure. Piccolo smacking him away during the Nappa fight pretty much summed up the viewer's sentiments over that whiny brat.
This is absolutely hilarious. They left in the flat-chested jokes, but took out a 3 minute sequence about buying panties, and a grenade turned into a hot pepper breakfast.Harmony Gold also did a test dub of Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump. It's rough, but I'm a fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxJh5pRzO-Q
Dragon Ball has better art than Z, specially in Toriyama's original manga.
Am I right in remembering that the scene where Goku takes off Bulma's panties implies that Goku used to use his "grandfather's" dick as a pillow?
What I don't understand is that Saint Saiya was HUGE in every other country but not in the US.
Saint Saiya was HUGE in mainland China.
Except he never fought any mooks. Like, that Saibaman was the first time, and we all know how well that went.
The opening, love it!
I watched Dragon Ball in order (so DB then DBZ) and I'd say Dragon Ball has a better story than Dragon Ball Z. Scenes are less drawn out, and it feels more like an adventure.
Haven't watched GT or Kai though.
Here in Canada, Dragon Ball was on a few years before Z in the mid-90s.
I loved it a lot! To this day I think I liked it more than Z. It was the anime equivalent of a fun, lighthearted RPG.
As for DB, I felt that despite it's kinda slow start, the Tournament/Red Ribbon Army/King Piccolo stuff was genuinely exciting. I would say that the fights, while not as over the top as DBZ, were probably more exciting to watch. And yes, Yamcha was a jobber even back then, but some of his fights were entertaining. In case point, Yamcha vs Tien. The dub was probably that first moment where Funimation was willing to go beyond the ridiculously cheesiness of DBZ-style dubbing (and was more willing to be more accurate to the original).
Scrolling through the thread thinking about all of the things in DB just makes me like it even more. Z just "is", there's Super Saiyan and so on, but that's it. DB was when Goku had proper weaknesses and had to overcome them. Like when his tail was a problem, and the emotional scene withthat followed.Grandpa Gohan
One scene in Z I love is where Mercenary Tao meets Gohan, because it's a funny reference to that whole storyline in DB. It's a shame that it means nothing to a lot of people.
For people that went into Z without knowledge of DB, the fact that Goku and Piccolo can't beat Raditz must not really mean much.
I haven't seen DB yet. I need to get on that.
I read the entire manga series back then. Great humorHarmony Gold also did a test dub of Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump. It's rough, but I'm a fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxJh5pRzO-Q

I loved Dragon Ball , its a shame that Dr. Slump never got a release here.
The Dragon Warrior anime did though.

Also, Taopaipai killingwith his TONGUE is still more badass to me than any of the grandiose ways anybody in the Z-era conducted genocide with explosions.Blue
