OP, did you just badmouth Seplhie and Eiko? Eiko’s sass is the best kind of sass, and FFIX is mostly too well written to have a bad dialogue from Eiko.

The exception, of course, being Amarant. There’s bad characters, there’s insufferable characters, and then there’s Amarant. Amarant is literally useless. Amarant doesn’t change the overall story of FF9 one single bit. He’s literal filler. Everything he does is filler, and of very poor quality too. Remove Amarant from FF9 snd you get exactly the same game, with a bit better flow in a couple of parts. While It’d be easy to pick almost any Nomura FF character for worst, I’ll pick Amarant. That’s how bad he is.

Best? Hard pick.
I guess Zidane is the best MC. Apart from his very brief breakdown - too brief and easily solved to really shake things up - he’s a tremendous guy, and that ending is perfection.
For support character, I really don’t know who can best Tifa. The lengths she’s willing to go to help everyone and save Cloud are incredible. And she has a literal slapfight on a ledge several hundred feet above the ground, ffs. You can forget all the details about FF7, and you’ll still remember that.

Tifa - she was engineered to appeal to virgin otaku/weeb losers. Girl with the body of a porn star but the personality of a sweet girl next door who has never known the touch of a man. And she does all the work of flirting with Cloud while he just acts like some socially retarded emo sad sack.

Auron is the best, his backstory and character motivations are far more appealing than any other character. And unlike the cast of most Final Fantasies, it is actually congruent. Shout out to Yüna and Lulu as well, who I think are some of the stronger supporting cast.

Sephiroth second. He’s just so maniacal but so calm and measured simultaneously. What a bad ass.

Unfortunately, the worst list has a lot more characters on it. Zell, Steiner, Yuffie, all of the FFXV cast, Vaan the list goes on.

I don't feel like writing an essay on 4 characters but....

Worst: Quina (FF9). Ugly design, one dimension story and character, insanely annoying, awkward kit to use. Just everything about this character sucks with no positive points. There are other one dimensional characters in the series but they aren't on the same planet in terms of a grating personality. I don't know why this character exists plot wise.

Best: Garnet's (FF9) story arc is perfection. She defies the typical tropes of a princess character while still being lovable. Her entire storyline throughout the story is heartwarming and tear jerking and the conclusion is utterly satisfying.

I always thought having quina in your party is option and you can actually skip getting him/her.

I always thought Vaan mad penelo were wierd characters and didn't make sense that they did not feel like strong protagonists. Until I read later an interview with the devs later that they were not supposed to be. The Vaan and panelo were supposed to be observers of Bash and Ashe, who were the main protagonists as per the main plan. The devs however ran out of time to flesh out Vaan and panelo Characters and had to release them as such. With that in mind, Bash and Ashe are still great characters. I find the way Ashe revenge path shown in the story to be believable and close to human nature. Bash was a charismatic leader. But I would agree with saying that Baltheir takes the cake.

I don't know who is the worst character, but I can say that the cast of 13 was really bad (in addition for the game being bad as well). I also found no redeeming quality in Cloud and have no fucking idea why people love him or even why they loved FF7 (even the remake doesn't make him look good).

I don't remember much about 8 to comment about the characters.

Worst: Hope Estheim circa FFXIII-1. I checked out after he launched Snow off a ledge with the power of teen angst. Grown-up / non-brat Hope from the sequels is alright though.

Best: Hmm. Tempted to say Barret's portrayal in FF7R because I KNOW YOU CAN cracks me up without fail, but that's one scene.
