So the PlayStation Vita.....

My heart broke when Tretton said something about the Vita being the ultimate companion to the PS4.

From a platform worthy of inheriting the (niche) handheld legacy created by the PSP to a fancy gamepad for rich PS4 owners. Not cool, Sony.

As the lady from Kotaku said on the GT pre-show yesterdqy, it's a great PSOne machine. That has been it's main use to me. I'll absolutely love remote play with PS4, though.

Also I'd just like to take this time to say that even if Sony stop supporting the Vita it's already my favourite handheld of all time. I already own more games for my Vita than I've ever had for any other handheld. Also the PS4 remote play stuff is going to be awesome and the Vita continues to get great indie support to regardless of how successful the platform is with the mainstream so I'll certainly still have plenty to play on Vita in the future.

Both killzone and call of duty falls into the "games we already know" part. The first look at killzone vita was actually way back in 2011.

Is the ps3 niche? You know, psp and ps3 sold almost the same number of consoles.

Sony's E3 conference was really dedicated for PS4.
 
I'm hoping success of the PS4 revitalizes the Vita to some extent. Enough that Sony actually starts paying more attention to it...or perhaps at another conference.
 
I'll wait to see what is actually shown throughout E3 as last year Sony mentioned next to nothing about Vita at it's conference and didn't bump it for PS4 but instead for Wonderswan. Then the show floor titles ended up compiling into a very strong list.

I'm really wondering what the hell Shahid was talking about though, unless it didn't get shown at E3. Destiny of Spirits does not meet the hype he's talking about and their "dozens" of games talk doesn't seem very accurate when Sony only showed about a half dozen at the conference.

A big 3rd party get, even if you've got to pay for it, is what the system needs. GTA Stories or Red Dead Stories for example. Bioshock Vita actually happening would be nice but even that probably isn't quite as big as what they really need.

I don't think the Vita is going to die soon, but it will probably end up being more of a PS4 accessory. Retail will stock it in a small space within the PS4 display due to remote play, but the distribution and advertising of games looks poised to go mostly digital. Sony's comment about 60% of all purchases in the U.S. already being digital backs up why they'd be OK with it while at the same time showing how retailers are likely even less interested in carrying it than the shit hardware sales would suggest. They aren't even benefiting from the massive tie ratio on it, only Sony and publishers are.

My bad. As a former DS owner I just see the PSP as "niche" compared to the DS (which for me was the "mainstream" handheld). Anyway that's just a minor part of my point--that it's sad to see the Vita relegated to accessory status by Tretton's statement.

When I bought a Vita last year part of it was because of my positive impression of the PSP's library. I had a PSP at launch but didn't hold on to it very long because I became pessimistic of its future. (Man was I wrong about that--and I hope I'm wrong about the Vita's future as well.)

Yeah, definitely. Ah well, I hope with the PS4 launching the Vita get's a boost in sales as companion device and in turn will make it more attractive for publishers to publish games for it. Think that that is the strategy Sony is now aiming for.
 
Clearly the PS4 was the big winner out of Sony's conference, while the Vita got shafted (yet again). I find it hard to believe that they won't even be developing a game or two for the thing despite selling poorly. Oh well, at least we're still getting Tearaway which looks awesome.
 
I still love my Vita. :(

There have been good games on the system and there are some great titles on the horizon. It's definitely not getting the support I'd like, though.
 
There are a few things I really want to play on the Vita, but Sony seems to have no confidence in the thing. It seems like a waste to even buy it.

I only wanted to correct the "niche" part, i agree on the rest ;)
 
I was absolutely shocked to see so little first and third party games announced for the PS Vita. This should have been a big E3 for our little engine that could. Why would SONY even cancel Warrior's Lair if they had absolutely nothing else cooking.
 
The PsPlus Trojan horse will get them vita sales. Get Plus for the console and get a few free vita games....
 
Very poor showing for the VITA. What a beauty of a system, shame it is getting ignored, was hoping for some new software announcements, or anything to satiate my thirst. Nope.
 
The lack of Vita support and games was the biggest disappointment of the Sony press conference, along with the online paywall. Now, with the iOS7 getting official gamepad support, future seems to be kinda bleak for Vita.
Please, get well Vita :(.

PS+ doesn't hurt software sales if you look at their data. The tie ratio in the U.S. alone is 10:1. That is ungodly for the early life of any console, and Sony said 60% of that is digital. The profit per customer number for Sony must be absolutely HUGE, which is why they won't let it die, and 3rd parties have seen that pushing carefully targeted software can get them strong sales on the game (hence AC3:L).

It just isn't a great time to be a dedicated handheld when the old video game guard is concentrated on new home consoles (always the sexier option in this industry) and hte iOS/Android market is dominated portable gaming.

Sony's pivot to indie/small studio PC titles was a very good call on their part, but they're only pulling ports there. They either need to start landing some exclusives from the indie community, a few big 3rd party retail release exclusives, or a combination thereof.

Its a bit reassuring to see that Shahid's big PSV title wasn't Destiny of Spirits, but if not then where is it? Is Sony seriously punting on Vita for E3 under the assumption that PS4 would suck all the air out of the room anyhow?

We'll see. Shahid does work in Europe if I recall so maybe it's a European dev who doesn't have a big E3 presence. That would suggest Rockstar, who isn't even showing GTA V at E3 this year.
 
Still lots of Japanese games coming. Hyped for Toukiden, Dragons Crown, Atelier + lot of indie games and more ports coming.
Still they should have atleast had something new and exclusive to show.

Oh, come on! They wanna tell me that they couldn't even fit in 5 minutes for an unannouced vita games and a short talk by the devs?
It would have at least shown that they still care for the Vita...
 
I hope Shahid has something for the Vita customers in the next few days.

I'm okay with what was announced today but not ecstatic.

I mean it's obvious Vita is in for the long run and they are obviously TRYING to rectify the problem, taking polls on jRPG games we want is an obvious sign.

The problem is - it takes awhile for games to be made.
 
I was so angry that i subscribed twitter and sent this to yoshida lol:

"E3 2013 huge disappointment for vita owners and there were already low expectations. No demos shown and old ports no one asked for."

Do you think it was a bad move?

Yeah the PSVita has a small but good stable of games, they really need to ramp it up because if they miss the boat now then itll be finished for good. A price drop and a lineup of games for all markets would go a long way.

The system has so much potential especially to bridge Japanese developers. Theres so many successful IPs on the PSP that can easily move over to the Vita.

This is what I was waiting for. Even then, I didn't expect things to get this bad. It's really sad how Sony is treating the Vita.

That's not to say there aren't games to look forward to or I don't have games to get busy with. It's the complete opposite. But I'd have also liked to play games that are more based on old IPs and are popular. Where's MGS, FF, RE etc.?
