Sony Celebrates PLAYSTATION 3 First Birthday in the US

Happy Bday Sony, let's celebrate by unloading shit tons of content on the PS store Tuesday!

All I want to know is if they'll have a Christmas surprise like last year (GT: HD on Christmas Day).

A year ago, we didn't even know if we would have one username for all of our games. PS online has come a loooong way.

What's the criteria for claiming you've revolutionized the industry?

Like it or not, when the Playstation hit the market Sony allowed a lot of things Nintendo, and subsequently SEGA (who followed in Nintendo's footsteps) would not let pass in game approval. In terms of religious symbolism, language, and other "mature" subject matter that the kids gloves world of Nintendo and SEGA did not permit before then.

Which in turn paved the way for Grand Theft Auto, Xenosaga, Blood Omen, Manhunt, and the like.

And no, non-licensed porno shovelware on the NES doesn't count.

Not to mention Sony actively pursued an older market demographic with disposable income. Making it a legitimate hobby, and not "something for children".

Hell if we can have stupid annual Dreamcast wank threads, I see no reason not to have a thread dedicated to hardware that is relevant in today's gaming industry.

This is kind of like those grieving parents who celebrate the birthday of stillborn children.

Come to think of it, the machine is shaped like a baby coffin.

Shipped vs sold reported here. Microsoft overshipment last year is well known. Sony has a 1 million advantage over 360 last year just in actual japanese sales.
Getting off track of course, but MS didn't over-ship until the following quarter.

Japan is a huge boon to Sony that MS will never have, as well as a much stronger Europe. Sony is really has a much better balance of markets to leverage, and I think that's going to ramp up in 2008.

love my PS3. Love my blu-rays. No complaint from either of those ends.

My strongest complaint right now is their utter lack of the PSN Store. MS is killing them with XBLA, and Nintendo, which is a fair comparison given the VC, is killing them on PSX classics. What adds insult to injury on that one is that their PSX pricing is so much better than VC.

Seriously Sony.. sweeten the pot for devs to release more small dev content to PSN, and start at the very least loading up PSN with PSX Classics from first/second parties and comfy third parties (at the very least Capcom and Konami who have shown to be in love with VC)

I think it was mentioned that this is a regional issue. The PSX selection on the Japanese store is much, much better.

This will be fun since I have always thought that Haze was going to XBOX 360 sometime next year. Aside from carefully worded trailers and ads, I thought this was old news.

Happy Birthday Next-Gen.

Yeah, it's always been a PR exclusive. But thank you Ubi, for dicking people around. I know a good few people who have lost all interest they had in the game thanks to that, so I hope it was worth it.

Really? Can you download Tomba yet? I got the game but would like to see more people play this classic.

The fact that Gary Whitta lol'ed with this confirms what a miserable trolling attempt this post was.

I'm sorry you feel that way as it wasn't intended as a troll. It was a presentation of two comparisons that directly related to the topic at hand. That you don't like the comparisons is not of my concern, nor is your offense the standard for trolling.

Please, by all means continue the celebration of this blessed event.

One year and I own 4 PS3 games, 2 of which are from Insomniac.

That isn't a compliment to the other studios.

do you own a 360 aswell?

if so...then obviously your going to buy the majority of games that are on both platforms for the 360 instead.

Personally i dont see how anybody can complain about the lack of games on the PS3 now. There is more than enough worthwhile content to justify a purchase.

One day too early. Way to jump the gun, Sony.

Yes, I know it's the last business day of the week.

I'm still planning to post an anniversary thread late tonight. Harumph.

No amount of flowery wording from your genius mind can replace the fact that it was a distasteful comparison... and filled to the cracked, plastic rim with douchebaggery.

It wasn't even properly eloquent. "Presentation of two comparisons" uh-huh, yeah, wait, no, what, my ass! And everyone else's!

Flowery? I do not see an abundance of redundant adjectives and obscure nouns. Oh, well. To each his own.

Distasteful comparison? Perhaps, but that seems to be in line with GAF standards, unless I missed a new sticky.

Party on, Sony!

Oh, is proper eloquence covered in the new sticky? Sorry. BTW, it was two.

Well, I think it remains to be seen just how much of an advantage Japan will give Sony.

a year ago today I left work at 1:45 pm to get to my local Wal Mart and waited in line until 8 am the next morning to pick up my 60GB

Was it worth it? Initially no but lately I've been warming up to my PS3 a hella lot more than I did for the first 6 months I owned it.

I think it's actually a shame yesterday's NPDs couldn't have gone better for Sony. Give them something to celebrate. Still, good stuff coming so I'm sure next year will be better.

READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE YOU COMMENT

Blu-ray bits
A recent Blu-ray Disc adoption survey shows that 87% of PS3 users watch Blu-ray movies, 80% of PS3 users have purchased Blu-ray movies and 82% intend to purchase or rent Blu-ray movies.

Umm... Didn't somebody release statistics that said that 76% of PS3 owners didn't know that the system played Blu-Ray Movies (or was cared?). This wasn't long ago. Now 80% are supporting Blu-Ray? Seems a remarkable comeback to me.

Have they started including a blu-ray sampler disc in the box or something? That would count. :D

Quality > Quantity, although the PSN could use a bit more of the latter.

Well, Bluray beat HD-DVD addon -> Mission accomplished.

Sony PR said:
PS3 Blu-ray currently outsells Xbox 360 HD-DVD 9 to 1.

Wait- the point they're making with this is that the number of PS3 Blu-Ray-capable players (meaning all of them) sold 9 times as many units as the 360 HD-DVD addon did?

I'm not really sure how big of a PR point this is. People who bought a PS3 got a Blu-Ray player whether they planned to use it or not. People who bought the addon for the 360 did so for the sole purpose of watching HD-DVDs. This really isn't a valid way to compare the numbers.

Although in the initial months after the launch of the PS3 I cursed myself for buying one, I've come to be happy that I have the model that I do rather than the gimped version now offered.
