Sony Controller to Be Named "Move." Bye bye Gem? truly outrageous

Well, I don't think Mesmerise was likely particularly well optimised for starters...

The only commonality between Mesmerise and Arc is the latency in getting data from capture->PS3. After that you have to suppose the processing will differ both in substance (I imagine Arc processing is simpler...) and in the level of optimisation applied. So that's why I think it's quite crude to try and use Mesmerise as a guide wrt potential Arc performance. I do hope they get the opportunity to measure latency directly at GDC though.

FWIW, Sony did kind of address difference between latency in Arc and 'previous camera work' on PS3 at last year's Develop.

I don't really know about the lag numbers and shit, but the e3 demo looked like it was responding fast as fuck. But I suppose it will vary from game to game.

They sort of fooled us there tbh, they were showing you the video feed of the PS Eye thus not counting its lag. The only way to really see the lag is the times that they actually film the television itself along with the guy demoing it. I remember I did some calculations on the lag (forgot the exact umbers), but it was very responsive nonetheless, just not as much as they made it out to be.

These controllers are supposed to open these consoles up to the wider market that Nintendo captured.

Don't understand the push for it being used on FPSes and stuff...it's not about that.

The push is because Sony's trying to get hardcore gamers interested in it. It's good that they aren't delusional enough to believe that they have any chance of tapping into Nintendo's market. That isn't going anywhere.

So whats confirmed so far, there will be *some* lag like natal? what was this 1:1 thing?

Well I think there is a chance of both. Certainly being one of the former I'm interested because I think that kind of controller for certain kinds of games (RTS for instance) could be good and the Wii isn't a platform I could be happy with.

As far as the latter goes, certainly I know of folks who bought the PS3 for media (hell for every BluRay fan I know the PS3 as their entry point - just like with DVD and the PS2) but for many the controller is too hard and so they've never really played games on their PS3s. So a simplified controller could really help out here, especially paired with the right games. I know of one older relative already who has said he'd buy an Arc immediately if it offered a Wii Sports like experience. He's played and liked Wii sports but he's unwilling to buy another box just for that.

I think the biggest problem with trying to tap into that market is that it's working under the assumption that those people want another system. I don't think that they do. Those people that Nintendo brought into gaming are happy with the Wii. It's also been built from day one to be what it is now. Another issue is simply even trying to stand up to Nintendo when it comes to their ability to create simple yet fun experiences like a Wii Sports. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think anyone can.

Sure. I don't really think you'll see many Wii only households brought in by Wi Sports looking at Arc (or Natal for that matter) and feeling any interest in those as some kind of upgrade. There is still a pool of other people though that Sony and MS can access though, and members of families who already have their hardware who don't currently play games because controllers are hard is one market (that certainly exists in my extended family), there's people who still don't own a current gen or any home console, and of course there's traditional gamers. All of which depends on what software the platform holders can get made and how they market. Both really need to bundle it all together with consoles from day one of the devices launch, as well as for upgraders need to offer a bundle that offers a range of experience. Without that neither motion control system will extend the life of the platform and will be little more than a testbed for the next gen (which is exactly what has happened with Eye/Eyetoy based games so far).

One thing that would be interesting to see is both Sony and MS offer a substantial range of smaller specialised motion control games through their online stores. Waiting for disc titles to be Arc/Natal titles is going to be really a rough road in terms of getting existing owners to upgrade or seeing people choose their platform in terms of that kind of experience.

Sure, but from what we have seen the lag difference between this an Natal (again, from what we've seen) is a pretty big difference. The difference is that one can be used efficiently for certain types of games, due to the minimal lag, whereas the other can only be used for a more inaccurate aka casual type of game (which is what they're going for anyway.

Also, the 1:1 notion has nothing to with lag, but more so 'accuracy' and it being in true sync with what's on screen vs real life.

As for the debate of casual vs hardcore games, the difference (imho) between the two is that one has the capability to be applied and the other does not, that simple. The whole point of Natal (as said my MS) is to create so called 'new types of playing experiences', which is another way of saying they are now providing casual gaming to rival Nintendo's market.

Whereas with Arc it is capable of doing both, thus appealing to both crowds, therefore making the thing not an entirely useless peripheral in the end. The whole point of it imo (in the grand scheme of things) is to show that this can become future control/input method of gaming without eliminating the more traditional 'gamers games'.

In any case isn't there a range of lag factors in both the use of certain displays and wireless controllers now? I've certainly seen that claimed since the start of this generation, but I've never really noticed. At least not like online lag.

There are millions of people who don't own a Wii yet.

If Sony is pitching this to hardcore gamers like you say...it restricts its potential success.

If this is really the case I don't see this flying. Having to buy many more peripherals is one thing but if the software is mostly restricted to stuff I already play on a controller I'm not that interested.

I know there's been more recent talk that Arc is also just a codename, but would Sony really trademark 'just' a codename?

Wow that's nice looking mouse, but shame I'll never buy MS mouse ever again as bad history.

With that delayed to Fall , they might also refining the design of 'Wand' and get more games on the launch.
Hurry up GDC.

Might just be coincidence, but kind of funny.

Funnier still if it really is a Arc game, after that original Gradius PS3 announcement at TGS 05 (or was it 06?) that quietly disappeared...

It's gotta be a coincidence. How would a gradius even control with ARC?

So does anyone here know if the Arc remote does anything functionally different from the Wiimote? Like say if Arc had a speaker and the Wiimote didn't?

I'm really trying to find the differences asides from the camera or is that the only major difference?

It has a light ball which changes colour.

You got it all covered, the camera can allow some augmented reality stuff, and the microphone in the PS Eye can be used for voice recognition.

"Augmented Reality Stuff"? What does that mean?

Say your playing an EyeToy type game with there being a video feed of you playing game - it would replace said Arc with a tennis racket or gun or whatever.

Besided the Camera bringing something totally different to the table then what the Wii is doing. I'd say, as far as function goes, The 1:1 motion control is doing what I and many others throught the wii would do when it first launched. In stead of motion controll we got "Waggle" from the wii.

Technically, it isn't doing anything since it isn't out yet.

No but we've seen enough tech demo's to know that the science behind it is sound. Accurate tracking in 3d space is what sets it apart from what the Wii is doing IMO.

Precision and PSEye aspect aside, since the camera is on the other end you can write and draw with high precision using Arc (clearly demonstrated with E3 demo). Writing with the Wiimote is like writing with a pointer only (shaky results). They can do both pointing and 2D writing/drawing (like if a sheet of paper was floating in the air) with the Arc.

Anyone else excited to see what Sony has for ARC at GDC? I just saw that gamescom video again and it looks awesome.

I wish I can attend.... EVERY YEAR it is in my city...and all I can do is stand outside by the entrance.

Just saw pictures of Wand/Nunchuk so:

Nunchuck has an analog stick at the front, below that X and O and below that a D pad. Underneath is L1 and L2. Its actually long, not like the Wii Nunchuk.

As for the Wand it has one very big button on top and then all four facebuttons (X,O,Square and Triangle) and underneath is a big trigger called T.

I'm guess the doubling up of X and O across the two is to keep full compatibility with single Wand set-ups.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll see in the week.

If that is true, sounds really good... without knowing the price :lol

The price can't be too prohibitive, seeing as there is already an equivalent (Wiimote) on the market already.

I am Alpha and Omega....

I jest, I have a friend with access to these. Hopefully I'll be proved right at GDC.

Any more info on what that big button does on the Arc wand? I heard rumours a while back that they were thinking of making it a biometric sensor pad.

It seems it could be used as a regular DS3 and Wand. Hence 2 for the price of one. Good deal.
