Sony E3 2017 Conference Thread [Over]

You can literally say this about ANY game :) (Like Metro for example)

I disagree. A lot of games at first glance have a lot more going for them. Spiderman is Spiderman and there isn't really anything quite like Spiderman. Horizon you play as a tribal warrior fighting ribotic beasts in a world over run by nature. In God of War, you play as a tattoo'd man slaying giant mythical beasts. Even Metro I think stands out a bit more by creating a much more desolate atmosphere with more disturbing designs. Plus it simply has graphical fidelity and polish that Days Gone lacks.

As it stands, I fail to see anything memorable about Days Gone that could ever place it among these franchises.

I am not an Xbox fanboy but it's my preferred system. And I can't even begin to fathom how anyone can say Sony didn't smash that Xbox conference in to the ground. Everything they showed was exclusive to their brand and showed what the power of PS4 pro could do.

I feel the exact same as you.

They are lucky Microsoft had such a bad show because I feel like this was a total miss for them too. Felt very uninspired/dialed in.

I see two main problems. First and most important being, as good as the actual content was, 90% of these were games we already knew about. If you only show games we know about what's the point of the show? Don't they know we tune in to E3 for big surprise game announcements? I expected at least 2 or 3 more; something big like Bloodborne 2, RE 2 Remake, or whatever.

And second of all, from a pacing point of view, the lack of set up for each game from a live presenter really lessened their impact and made the show really impersonal. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for brevity. No one wants to return to the rambling slide show filled shows of old. But a little more showmanship, personality, and fan fair would have gone a long way.

Without new games and showmanship they might as well just release trailers straight to the press and skip the show.

Side Note- Thank god for Bluepoint. That Shadow Remake is truly stunning and my game of the show by a long shot.

So wtf happened. No Far Cry 5, no Star Wars, no Red Dead.
I have never seen such a short Sony conference.Shit was only 60min.
Something must have gone wrong for them this year.

Someone please check on Son of Sparda and make sure he's breathing ..

We need more bollywood .gifs until PSX.

That was just last year.
This year they have many exclusives from Europe that haven't gotten the light of Day at E3.

I feel Gamescom is back (hope).

Dreams
WilD
Hellblade...

Probably for Japanese titles (like NNK2) and Indies that got bypassed too.

That would be nice, but I believe Hellblade is out before Gamescom. It's also on PC.

If all of these played like shit it wouldn't matter... So by default do you find Metro and Days of Decay not exciting? You can definitely say the same about those games.

It was an average conference, not bad at all. The games they showed off were fine. Its just that every conference Sony has had in the past few years has been so epic for a variety of reasons that an average one like this is like a punch in the gut.

Hopefully they can get back on track with TGS preshow and PSX

What an underwhelming conference. Wasn't most of the stuff they showed the same as last year? Nothing I really cared about.

OK. You are talking like somebody is forcing you to play it... I think it looks great because I like third person action adventure games. Sure TR, Horizon, Uncharted, Last of Us all are kind of the same, but I don't see how Days Gone is any less exciting than Metro for example (there's literally a bear in both of them). It could be shit, but from what was shown I don't think it's clear which will be better.

I don't think anybody's forcing me to play it. I'm just stating my current impression of the game - it could absolutely change with more footage, or if I go hands-on with it before release.

As for Metro, that at least has legacy to lean upon. Metro is known for hardcore survival - having maps be physical items, ammunition double as currency, etc. So when I saw the player character pull an arrow out of a dropped enemy, I got the gist of what that game was. It's also not quite my cup of tea, but I'll give it points for feeling different (That said, the demo of Metro looked far more linear and unfinished than Days Gone).

Comparing the two games would be pretty pointless. They're apocalyptic action games, but that's really where the similarity ends. Metro's not even a console exclusive.

They showed further gameplay of announced games, but not really anything exciting as far as new announcements go (I'm kinda hype for MH World though). Thus, it lacked the punch of the previous 2 E3 conferences, but those were really hard to follow up on. Luckily, Sony's saving grace is that they do a lot more shows aside from E3 so they don't really need to blow out on it as much. Still, after impressive showings in previous years, this was a stellar disappointment in comparison. Show was merely okay but that's kind of low on the scale we're used to with them.

Well, E3 is a game show, not a business plan competition. People likes to make it into brand or exclusive club competition and Sony always wins by that regard. But I think Xbox's celebrating games as medium approach (multiplatform cross play, all games on PC, diversifying game genre showcases, hugging indies, etc) is worth praising.

Anyway, this thread is about Sony and it's 2018 and beyond exclusives and I think it does a good job showcase that.

What does it matter if it's exclusive or not? I guess legacy could matter, but did you play previous Metro games?

This is exactly why I don't get Days Gone hate. It could be complete shit, but so far there's not much evidence that it will be bad. And the setting is not much different than other games that were shown. So why all the hate?

Spiderman looks like a game I can watch someone play on Twitch and get the same satisfaction as myself playing it.

I can't wait for its release so I can watch all of the cutscenes on YouTube.

Monster Hunter World should have been their show stopper. But even that will look better on the new XBX. I guess that's why they didn't focus on it too much.

This was the sequel to last year's show. Didn't feel like new games were revealed, even though some were. Felt like all the major games had been shown before.

I think on its own this show was okay to decent.

In the grand scope of things, it makes sense. Sony has had two big E3s back to back - They announced Horizon, Dreams, TLG, FF7R, Shenmue 3, Days Gone, God of War, Spider-Man, and Death Stranding over the last two years and TLoU PT II was announced 6 months ago.

This just seems to be a cooldown year. It also seems like PSX may become more important in Sony's yearly showings.

My biggest gripe was with the lack of firm release dates for major titles.

if that was their mindset they would not focus on any multiplat game. I don't think that matters to them

Games shown were good, but they are mostly the same games they already showed last year that still haven't come out yet (and not going to be released anytime soon). Zero surprises also made this a boring conference.

So far, all boring conferences all around.

I understand development time but some of these 2018 releases just made me feel so blah.

All I really cared about was God of War and Days Gone...

The rest not so much.

Best conference far and away. Shadow of Colossus was a major bomb to drop, God of War looks fantastic, SUPERHOT and Skyrim VR are VR system sellers and I cannot wait to hop into them, Days Gone looks phenomenal and I finally get my dream Spider-Man game.

8/10 conference for me. Loved it.

I really now suspect PS5 will get announced, revealed and released in 2019.

...no chance. PS4 is on a huge, huge roll at the moment with no signs of stopping. Why mess with that momentum? This will be a long generation, especially with the mid-gen upgrades. Won't see PS5 until 2020 at the absolute earliest.

God Of War looks amazing! And Shadow of the Colossus Remake sounds great!!!! The conference compared to other years was a letdown but there were some nice things.

This year I will be playing UC and Horizon. Which also makes me think, that the biggest letdown was seeing pretty much the same games as last year with closer release dates. But maybe that's normal, it just seem much more obvious. But definitely 2018 for Sony looks very good, starting with God Of War.

Huh? Why the hell would they care about that? They gave it a full trailer at the beginning of their conference....

Honestly, I think it will be until the 2020s, aside from the Switch, before we see the next full generation, like the PS5, or Xbox Two (or whatever the hell it will be called officially).

Otherwise, if we were gonna see a PS5, or Xbox Two (or again, whatever the hell it will be called officially) anytime soon, I don't think we would be seeing stop gap measure like the Pro, or X.

Spiderman looks like a game I can watch someone play on Twitch and get the same satisfaction as myself playing it.

The beginning bit I felt it was interesting and perhaps this can be my first Spider-Man game since ps2? but as it went further into it, I got the same feeling you're stating.

However, it could have more depth and the fights could be more engaging further into the game so I'll take a wait and see approach for now. Insomniac are top tier in the gameplay dept to be fair.

So I'm guessing no mention of a firmware update for system wide downsampling on the Pro?

Gutted! :-(
Not so sure this will ever happen.

If all of these played like shit it wouldn't matter... So by default do you find Metro and Days of Decay not exciting? You can definitely say the same about those games.

Well, yeah. But shouldn't a game be thematically interesting in addition to playing well? And like I said, I like Metro. I think the first game pulled me in with its especially bleak atmosphere with the Russian post-nuclear setting. All I know about State of Decay is the sequel's lackluster trailer from yesterday so I'm not too interested in that either.

A bit underwhelming. First time in a while that Microsoft had a clearly better showing IMO. They had a better overall presentation and a more solid lineup.

God of War and Spiderman both look really good, though. Those stood out to me the most, and I'm curious to see more about the SotC remake. Is it just a visual overhaul, or is there more to it?

It wasn't bad by any means, I can't complain too much about a solid hour of video games without any BS in between.

Every conference this year has been like......decent, but nothing more. No real big surprises outside of BG&E2.

Definitely the case with Sony here. Some good stuff but none of it surprising. For me personally there wasn't a whole lot, and the one game I'm really interested in (Spider-Man) looked kinda underwhelming here.

What stood out for you as a more solid line up from Microsoft?

I'm not so sure that the "old man Logan" take is the right direction for GoW. People want to play as Kratos and not as some kid. I won't like it at all, if it keeps switching back & forth between them.

Had some time to digest it

There needs to be a rule in place....if the game is not going to get released before next years e3...dont fucking show it

Last years e3 was great....seeing it again 12 months later looking like it will probably be released right before 2018 e3..not great

Wait...did people know that Shadow of The Colossus was being remade? And that Monster Hunter finally coming to PS4?

Serious question. I don't look for leaks.

As others have mentioned I think conferences (especially Sony this year) is a cool down for all the games they've kept announcing. I'm hoping by next year when most of these games get released (honestly some are going to be delayed and I would be surprised if not) that next year is another round of new games.

These games need to get released and showing games announcements that won't be out for years to come will be too much in my opinion.
