Sony E3 2017 Conference Thread [Over]

This year was definetly an off year.
2013 - good year, PS4 hype and games like FFXV/KH3 announced
2014 - weak year, UC4 teaser was highlight
2015 - Year of Dreams
2016 - great year, lots of announcements
2017 - okay year, catch up on last years announcements

I'm honestly thinking compromise by Sony to make their PSX conference more bombastic XD.
Because when you look back at PSX 2016, that felt more like what E3 2017 should have been like and vice versa.

I think next year will PS4's last hurrah before PS5 hype begins.

Wait...did people know that Shadow of The Colossus was being remade? And that there was a Monster Hunter finally coming to PS4?

Serious question. I don't look for leaks.

Shadow of The Colossus Trademark filing went up earlier this week so people knew about that. Rumors about monster hunter were also swirling about earlier in the week not sure how "leaked" that was though.

It's pretty baffling, to be honest.

VR has a long way to go, but some people don't want it to get off the ground.

People who don't own VR are mainly salty about the steep entry requirements...whether it be the cost or the hardware required (for PCVR). I own a Vive myself but I was still interested in seeing what PSVR is doing, as we're all in this together :)

The best news for Sony out of this E3 (besides Undertale) is literally The Witcher 3 Pro Patch lol

I wonder what stopped them from cramming in Undertale? They game sold over 1 million copies already. It's ready for the main stage.

WHERE 👏 IS 👏 SUCKER 👏 PUNCH

I can't wait for this same reaction for Retro tomorrow, too.

Shellshocked here. Devolver won E3. Who could have predicted this?

Yeah. They didn't announce much, but I'm not going to remember nor care about Microsoft's car or the aerial dancers for Days Gone. I'm going to remember the future.
.. Future's... Future's FUTURE'S

That Suda nod also has me chomping at the bits to see what that could be.

Watching the EZA stream of the conference again. And it confirms that yea, I think this was just a super solid conference but not as good as the previous years.

Monster Hunter: World and SotC were phenomenal for me. GoW and Spidey killers as well.

We've been spoiled by bomba E3 of past, that's for sure.

I liked their shut up and show games approach, but it was a tad boring since nothing new was announced. That's a little concerning, since it probably means that after the late 17 early 18 batch, they're going to have very little 18-20.

Still probably the best conference this E3, but that's not saying much. Outside of Sony and Ubisoft, there was nothing interesting or game changing, and little risk in new IP.

I'm not so sure that the "old man Logan" take is the right direction for GoW. People want to play as Kratos and not as some kid. I won't like it at all, if it keeps switching back & forth between them.

I love GoW as a game, but hate Kratos as a character. If having a kid is what it takes to stop him from just stabbing everything & screaming incoherently, then I'll eagerly take it. Especially if the kid ends up being cool, too. He does appear to be Kratos' biological son, after all.

Overall pretty poor showing

+ Spider-man looked amazing. GAF will hate the QTE but this is the spidey game people have wanted for years. If the marketing is right, the casual audience will eat it up and it'll sell as well as Batman does, which is 5MM+

Neutral
Uncharted, it's Uncharted
Days Gone, great graphics, lots of gameplay possibilities, Sony Bend's pedigree, but it looks somewhat generic
MvC:I, I have fond memories of the game back in the days, but no Wolverine kinda brings it down to neutral level

- Everything else

To be fair Sony didn't need to do much here given where they are and where the competition is.

...no chance. PS4 is on a huge, huge roll at the moment with no signs of stopping. Why mess with that momentum? This will be a long generation, especially with the mid-gen upgrades. Won't see PS5 until 2020 at the absolute earliest.

Honestly, I think it will be until the 2020s, aside from the Switch, before we see the next full generation, like the PS5, or Xbox Two (or whatever the hell it will be called officially).

Otherwise, if we were gonna see a PS5, or Xbox Two (or again, whatever the hell it will be called officially) anytime soon, I don't think we would be seeing stop gap measure like the Pro, or X.

Well then if that's the case, and it could well be, if the base PS4 got 8 years like Xbox 360 did and PS5 doesn't release until the end of 2021, we should be in for a huge technological leap by that time. The silicon and memory and process technologies we're just starting to hear about now, that is in development and not due for another 3-4 years should be commonplace and easily adaptable for game consoles.

Aren't people saying PS4 might last til 2019-20?

So wtf happened. No Far Cry 5, no Star Wars, no Red Dead.
I have never seen such a short Sony conference.Shit was only 60min.
Something must have gone wrong for them this year.

I dont get why they have the "Pre-show" and the short conference. Like it would have been better to merge both?

I guess they want to promote their website? Took hype away in my book. Not for nothing but this year they were trash. MS' was confusing as hell with their messaging and this has made me upset.

Anyone have a summary of the announcements/trailers that's been posted? I missed the press conference live and don't want to sift through this thread.

They are lucky Microsoft had such a bad show because I feel like this was a total miss for them too. Felt very uninspired/dialed in.

I see two main problems. First and most important being, as good as the actual content was, 90% of these were games we already knew about. If you only show games we know about what's the point of the show? Don't they know we tune in to E3 for big surprise game announcements? I expected at least 2 or 3 more; something big like Bloodborne 2, RE 2 Remake, or whatever.

And second of all, from a pacing point of view, the lack of set up for each game from a live presenter really lessened their impact and made the show really impersonal. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for brevity. No one wants to return to the rambling slide show filled shows of old. But a little more showmanship, personality, and fan fair would have gone a long way.

Without new games and showmanship they might as well just release trailers straight to the press and skip the show.

Side Note- Thank god for Bluepoint. That Shadow Remake is truly stunning and my game of the show by a long shot.

The bolded is I think the main reason why this show left me cold. Goes to show how presentation is just as important as content. Sony had plenty of good content but the context-less way they were shown seemed like watching a bunch of commercials rather than a press conference.
And the sound cutting off at the beginning of the show was really shoddy and set the tone for the rest of the show. The editing and camera work were awful throughout.

I honestly enjoyed Microsofts conference more even though the content there was mostly not to my tastes. It was much more proffessionaly put together in my opinion.

Developers not willing to take risks and fans only wanting 'games' and complaining about other things have led to this. E3 press conferences are now just a reel of trailers. There is 0 character or magic anymore to these shows. Kinda sad really.

BTW, maybe I'm alone, but if anything, some of the stuff I seen in the pre-show was some of the most interesting stuff I seen from from Sony at E3.

You're never alone on opinions like these. It's like the person who said am I the only one ever. But yeah, ni no kuni and hidden agenda were pretty fresh

Because when you look back at PSX 2016, that felt more like what E3 2017 should have been like and vice versa.

During E3 2016, the popular rumor was that Sony was supposed to show RDR2 and the trailer got pulled at the last minute.

Looking back on it, I think it's far more likely that Sony pulled TLOU2 at the last minute, and that's why Days Gone was shown twice.

I am not an Xbox fanboy but it's my preferred system. And I can't even begin to fathom how anyone can say Sony didn't smash that Xbox conference in to the ground. Everything they showed was exclusive to their brand and showed what the power of PS4 pro could do.

Not everything they showed was exclusive, but it was a much better conference overall. It had worse downtime but the highs were much higher. Most of MS's highs were from multiplats and OG Xbox BC.

Aren't people saying PS4 might last til 2019-20?

Some are saying 2019 others 2020. I'm in the 2019 boat. I expect E3 2019 to be similar to 2013's conference. Half PS4 and Half PS5. Not gonna make a lot of difference since I assume the PS5 is going to be BC meaning people will play newer PS4 titles on PS5. The whole Pro/X consoles have made things complicated to predict when it comes to next gen.

But let's just leave these talks for the future.

Why was there zero gameplay in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite trailer? For a moment there, I thought it was a new RPG.

Still getting it though.

why no Last of Us 2 footage?
6 months is too soon to show it again. Might not see it till next e3 to be honest. they were upfront that the game was in early development.

The probably should have saved the PSX announcement to close the show this year since PSx was stacked last year.

The developer crying while waving at Miyamoto during the Mario + Rabbids reveal at the Ubisoft conference is the highlight of this E3 for me.

I get the feeling that for me it's time to step away from gaming a bit. Thinking about selling my PS4 and getting a Switch and be fine with only playing a couple of Indies and some Nintendo first party titles and that's it.

That conference felt really odd. The trailers and demos were fine but the only thing I felt had a truly great showing was the Spider-Man demo. Few new announcements, and tbh Days Gone didn't impress me much at all.

Wow, great conference! LOT of good gameplay to watch and rewatch :-)

I don't see how folks can be thinking a ps5 is even close to being announced.

I'd be surprised if it's announced in 2019. But it will probably be 2020. Especially with tha mid gen refreshes.

I think we get one more solid round of games from the big developers and then they move to the "nex gen".

I think looking at your list these are just the cycles we Go through in the industry. Everyone is on a similar development cycle and right now everyone is nearing the end or have just finished it. Which is why we are getting a ton of games out now and that should continue through next year. 2014 was also weak for similar reasons, we had games but we knew about apt already

Next year might be weak as well with a huge 2019 show

In 2014 and 2015 I was still waiting for next gen. Now, several AAA games later - The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Dishonored 2, Titanfall 2, Quantum Break, Overwatch, Final Fantasy XV, Resident Evil 7, Horizon, Nioh, Prey, etc - and all the amazing upcoming games - Uncharted LL (basically Uncharted 5), The Last of Us 2, Arkham Spider-Man, Shadow of the Colossus w/ current gen graphical detail, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cuphead, Assassin's Creed Egypt (FINALLY), Norse God of War, Death Stranding, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, etc - it is crystal clear we are in the middle of next gen (now current gen). HYPE.
