Precisely! There isn't a problem. This is some fanboy gloom and doom bullshit! Plain and simple. Sony has been losing billions for years now and they're still going. They release good products with descent to god-tier quality and they have the #1 console in the world. Driveclub is coming out and they have Bloodbourn. Destany which launches on PS4 as the premier console has sold nearly a $1billion. I can go on about the new IPs and indie games that lead on their platform. No man's sky, and they also have steam on the PS3. Its the most extensive ecosystem for games and they're not spending their money to buy exclusives. As you stated, they make excellent phones and tablets too. People knock them because they're coming out of a terrible mess made by someone who doesn't understand how a Japanese company works. Kaz is fixing things and we just need to give Sony more time. Let Engadget write their ketchup article. What does a fail blog know about a thriving business. Remember the PS3? Now look at the PS4 -- yeah, exactly! Movies, TV, computers, portables.... never count out the comeback kid <3
What does this even mean?!! Sony's phones are universally praised. If there was a metacritic for phones, Sony would totally get a quality bonus.
Kaz has been fixing the problems caused by Stringer. Why would you get rid of the guy who is effectively healing the company?
what was going on in the last decade? why were they cycling through presidents like that? is that normal behavior? was it a knee-jerk reaction to sudden losses?
You know, I would kind of like to have a Sony Vaio if they seemed as nice as ASUS or MSI ones. I do like the way a lot of their laptops look, though. Some of them are really pretty.
It would also be kind of neat if they found a way to give some kind of PlayStation things on their laptops. Why aren't their laptops selling very well?
To some extent, Sony is suffering from a problem similar to that confronting Samsung Electronics Co., which on Thursday reported a steep drop in operating profit because of slowing smartphone sales. Though Samsung sold about eight times as many smartphones as Sony during the April-June quarter, both companies are facing pressure from Apple Inc.'s iPhones at the high end of the market and from upstart Chinese brands at the low end.
Three Chinese smartphone makers that rank between No. 3 and No. 5 globally in terms of market shareHuawei Technologies Co., Lenovo Group Ltd. and Xiaomi Inc.all made sizable gains in the latest quarter, according to data from Counterpoint, a technology research firm. While Huawei's smartphone shipments nearly doubled, to 20.6 million, Sony's fell to 9.4 million from 9.6 million, giving it a market share of about 3.1%. Among the leading brands, it was the only one to post a decline.
Smartphone sales in Latin America were particularly weak, Sony said.
i mean that's not even that much money to lose really.. when you think about it.
I think they'll start downsizing the PS division, make a profitable division even more so. They own way too many studios.
Huawei may not be fancy but there is no denying that they have great value for money with their phones. Sony offer nothing like that. Samsung are going to end up in the same boat as well of they don't push harder in the mid range sector, especially now that Apple have taken their heads out their bums and released properly sized devices.Sony blamed weak smartphone showing last quarter on weak Latin America sales. Huawei on other hand said their Latin America sales were up 550% last quarter.
Samsung should also suffer this year, Xiaomi surpassed them as China #1 manfacture last quarter and Huawei is eating into their Latin America sales.
Oh. I didn't know that. They sold their computer division.
ZeroHow likely is it that they'll spin off the mobile division?
Why?Zero
Oh. I didn't know that.
Well... why weren't their computers selling very well?
Core area for Sony (together with Digital Imaging and Gaming). Why?
Core area huh? I'd love to see where this is headed a decade down the line.Has to be said that nonsense runs in the Sony DNA.Core area for Sony (together with Digital Imaging and Gaming).
Spinning it off is nonsense.
Why?
Their marketing for phones is horrendous, I never see them at Verizon, they're never advertised on TV, and their naming conventions as already mentioned is terrible. 3 phones per cycle low, mid, and high end, properly named, is all you need.
Not only that but Samsung has taken the world by storm in the last decade. Nobody really considers Sony a top brand. Certainly not like they did in the 80s and 90s.
It's more like "oh yeah, Sony, what happened to them are they still good outside of Playstation?"
Makes best cellphones of its time, never get them on the store before its counterparts -> win.
Seriously, there was a lot of time I consider getting Xperia, the damn things are never there.
Their phones suck, not surprised at all.

Precisely! There isn't a problem. ... Sony has been losing billions for years now and they're still going.
Going forward, Sonys exposure could essentially be to specialist areas like cameras and video games, software, Sony pictures and Sony music, Mr. Smithers said.
How much does Sony have left in the bank? I think it might be time to sell of the Playstation brand. I'm sure they could get a pretty penny from the likes of Amazon or Google.
This is the stupidest fanboy crap that always comes up so quickly. Why would they give up something that is a steady cash flow for a one time payout that would not come close? They could negotiate one time usage rights much easier and still keep rights.Sell the damn spiderman rights already sony!!
That's the sad thing here. I see this sentiment all the time.
"Wow. That Xperia phone looks great. Where is it available? What?! It's not coming to NA for another 4 months? It's only on T-Mobile? No Sprint? AT&T? Verizon? Oh well, guess I'll get a Galaxy/iPhone."
Sony is literally giving sales away by dragging their feet in getting their phone out on time and in NA on all carriers.
Well it depends on ROI, not revenue. This is the stupidest fanboy crap that always comes up so quickly. Why would they give up something that is a steady cash flow for a one time payout that would not come close? They could negotiate one time usage rights much easier and still keep rights.
Time for Microsoft to acquire Sony.
On one hand, that would be the dumbest thing MS could ever do.
On the other hand, NeoGAF reactions.
I say it's worth it!
So when is Samsung buying Playstation ?
