Sony HMZ-T1 first Organic EL 3D head mounted display

big_z said:
thats was their initial impression. they were impressed by the screen quality compared to previous headsets but they talked about it more on the podcast and gave it thumbs down.
I just listened to their podcast, it might have been the most uninformed, superfluous, and hyperbolic shit I've heard in a long time. Do yourself a favor, stop visiting that site, and don't pimp it around here.

Examples for the LULZ -

"It weights ATLEAST 4 lbs."
"Is it 3D?"
"You would never sit down with it on your face."
"This will never come out. Its proof of concept. Its 5 years off, but will never come out."

Wow, so outside of the little video clip where the guy wears it for 40 seconds, did they mention if they used it at all?

I'm currently looking for as many negative impressions as I can find so I can save $800, otherwise I'm doomed to spend it.

Besides that.

Am I missing something? why are that movie and podcast dated on Jan 8.?
Are we really talking about impressions from almost a year ago?

And on top of that they did not say it sucked or gave it thumbs down. They did not in their "movie", they did not in their podcast. They were just being well wtf ever they were trying to be.. So what is he talking about?

And close to 2 kilo's?

So two things could be going one:

Sony made some awesome NASA-like weight reductions. I guess they took out the CRT monitor.
or
Tested.com needs new head/neck/set of hands for their bullshit guesstimation.

or did you purposely leave out that type of garbage...and pass off their impression as credible....

I suspect we'll probably see more of this bro-fisting, joker-torial style of coverage surrounding this device. It's just too crazy, unique, and nerdy to expect everyone to take it seriously. Just accept it for the garbage that it is and toss it in the trash--trolling for hits, laughs, and entertainment value is inevitable.

It was probably based on the CES model, which has been redesigned pretty heavily for retail.

the engadget show was pretty much that. 45 minute show, this headset in the preview headlines, and it gets 60 seconds at the beginning with them basically taking the piss because it looks a bit funny. Entirely pointless

Yep, that would explain the date posted next to the movie and podcast. But still.. 3 lbs reduction?

I think it's somewhere between weight reduction from Sony and some informative bs from tested.com.

Tested.com is for clever people who want to buy smarter, tweak better, hack harder, and watch us destroy bad gear.

Ugh. Like IGN is for informative articles about games. He-who-should-not-be-named for sales numbers. And Steven Seagal for good acting.

Well, it is a Sony device...

If this was Apple's doing, it would already be beloved before anyone had used it.

er..

It is not recommended for people 15 years old and younger because some experts believe overly stimulating imagery is not good for teenagers whose brains are still developing, according to Shigeru Kato, a Sony vice president.

now, two things are freaky. First, that bit of the article I pulled out from the daily mail website. Secondly, the 'read more' link was automatically put in there - I just highlighted the first paragraph but the above is what was pasted. Clever.

yes i am aware you cant put a screen right infront of your eyes because it screws your focus but a headset like this isnt the answer.
It pretty much is, if you want to have this type of device today, and have it be even remotely affordable. Its tech and optics specs are anything but dated, and it's surprisingly inexpensive all things considered. Your suggestion from the previous post that in your eyes would make it not dated, is physically impossible, and by acknowledging that in the post I'm quoting you're also contradicting yourself.

The ces podcast isn't the one I was referring to. That podcast was mostly alcohol fueled chatter. Comments like was it 3d most likey came from Whitta or Matt who didn't even see the device.

I would highly recommend waiting for proper reviews of this but It's clear some of you are set on making the purchase and have already set yourself to That new purchase defense mode.

Again. What podcast are you talking about then? Don't play the "set on making the purchase"- card. Just tell us which podcast so we can hear them say how it sucks and how it gets the thumbs down.

I want to know what reason they would use to give the set a negative review. What made them go all negative on that thing? Because I think it would be very nice for people who are thinking about buying it to also hear the cons.

For anyone taking advice from Tested.com podcast, just know that they do not like Sony. At all.

Gary Whitta hates Sony. He can't go an entire podcast without mentioning how they are a shit company.

It's fine to play devil's advocate. But it's just sad when you've got no credibility, facts or logic to back up your point of view.

'course there also is, 'that not/can't purchase offensive mode' . Not suggesting that you are in that category, of course. Just saying......

more like "this sounds promising from specs and initial impressions from some sites. Interested in purchasing but looking out for any gotcha's" mode.

Wow, you just don't know when to stop. Every product, in the history products, that has a nature of being off the norm, obtuse, or generally filling into a niche will have it band of cynicism. I don't know why you have such a hard-on for tested.com, but the reality is, numerous previews have heralded the HMZ T1 as the consumer benchmark of visual quality with unmatched immersion. Did I also mention tested.com is the technological equivalent of some no name blog on N4G? I digress.

There are negatives - eyestrain, isolation, etc., but the reasons your posts bother me is that you have done virtually zero research on the device, and the inherent technology behind it. You take your misinformed, uneducated opinions made by hacks in their own right, and post into a enthusiast thread. Here's some knowledge-

A- HMD's that are in the same realm of this product cost twenty five THOUSAND dollars.
B- The overall size and weight of the product is mainly due to the optical pathway which in and of itself is a breakthrough in engineering and made by the legendary Carl Zeiss.
C- You fail to understand / grasp / accept the fact that this is a revolutionary product in its space. HMD's of old are notoriously expensive (thousands of dollars), sub-HD (less than 480p), have narrow FOV (30 degrees approximating a 75 inch image), lack 3D, and are generally larger and sold to private commercial industries (Military, Aerospace emulation).

So do yourself a favor, stop visiting tested.com, or maybe you write for tested.com, but in any case, try forming your opinion by actually using the product. If it doesn't work for you, come back here, let us know why. Just a suggestion, try visiting more credible sites when speaking on exotic tech - AVSforum has a cavalcade of positive impressions, MT2s forum, etc. etc. etc.

Hell even the users on GAF have reported astounding impressions based on their time with the product. I just have hard time taking you seriously.

OH FYI - Most people in this thread are on the fence. We are all waiting for proper professional reviews. No one is making any blind purchase. The only person who has said he's commited is Router, and he has tried it out himself.

And yet he still did not provide the podcast where they say it sucks nor giving it thumbs down. Just some 9 months old weird chatter about the first showing on CES. I would not be surprised if tested.com would say that, however I did not find said podcast yet.

In the meantime we get the "you are set on purchase so whatever negative is being said is void"-card. So man up and provide the podcast or stop spreading FUD while hiding behind some imaginary podcast so it gives some weight to your words.

This. If there are issues, I want to know about them before I purchase it. And I won't be day 1 for this very reason. I want to know what the warts are and whether or not I can live with them.

I will not, however, build a shrine to negative impressions that are based off nothing but hearsay and speculation.

God bless him as a person but I have a few memories of him showing some really fanboyish angles. I hope that has sort of died down.

People jealous they can't run a website about tech with any level of success from their moms' basements. On NeoGAF?

Surprise, surprise.

This gadget looks cute. Not a one of you have used it. Keep your uninformed traps shut until you do. You come off as hip-shooting bafoons elsewise.

At least 4 people in this thread have tried it, and most people have heard the universal (save for apparently some random tested podcast that hasn't been linked to) praise.

I don't see how running a successful tech news site from your mom's basement is particularly enviable.

Time to climb up the stairs, peek out the front door, and take a breath of fresh air.

And this thread is nothing but impressions. Tons of links and otherwise. Sorry that you're desperately hoping it sucks, but the impressions have been wildly on the other side.

Fair enough - there's some pretty glowing reviews of the device already, though. One in particular from the person who's a certified video calibration expert, whose opinion is probably more worthy of listening to than 99% of typical tech blog writers.

Does someone know if you can take off the earplugs? I don't trust the 5.1 through ear plugs and I have an 5.1 amp that works perfectly....

Bragging about running a web site, really?
