Sony HMZ-T1 first Organic EL 3D head mounted display

Those are the price level of the headphones I use. If they can achieve reasonably close to that, there won't be any complaints from me.
 
Cale, how big would you say the size looked like? Do you think it looks like a big screen movie theater from the middle row?

Absolutely.

I'll be perfectly honest, I was interested in the product and I found the concept great. I even wanted to pre-order it prior to seeing it in person. Still, I had this huge fear that it would be another gimmick not worth the asking price.

One day, I browsed the Canadian Sony Style store and noticed that they were demoing the unit near my work. Needless to say, I jumped on the occasion to try them out.

I was floored. The colors are great, the 3d effect not too strong and not too subtle, absolutely no ghosting, and the icing on the cake... It most definitely feels like you're in a movie theater, seating in the middle row. The immersion was only damaged due to the fact that I didn't use the light blockers (didn't ask the clerk for them).

This isn't some gimmick, I WILL play my games only on this thing as soon as I get it. I can't go back to a normal TV. I don't know what I'll do with my tv in my room. I'll probably sell it to recoup some of the costs.

So yes, those aren't tiny pictures you'll be watching. If you can try it out, jump on the occasion. You won't be disappointed.

Can't wait for November.

I want to believe '_'. I've posted more than anyone in this forum and have searched all over for information. I just hate hearing that it is somewhat underwhelming and small.
 
Dark Souls has made me want one of these even more. Its very age inappropriate for my young kids, so I'm desperate to play, but can't play in front of them. So I need something like this.
 
I really hope more places than just Sony Stores have these to try on. Closest Sony Store to me is a 3.5 hour jet flight away :(

I have to correct my earlier statement. I went now again to test the glasses and the screen definitely is 100+ inches. This time the nose piece also did not press against my nose too much so the front weight was also much lighter.
I am back on the "might actually buy" train.

Is the demo unit available in all SonyStyle store? There's one near the University of Washington which is just about a 20 minutes drive away from where I live so I would definitely give it a try if they have it set up.

This is promising - once you have it at home and have properly adjusted everything to the optimal conditions, it seems like it should be a treat.

That's what I'm thinking of doing as well. A theater size screen, with virtually zero display lag/ghosting/blurring that does crosstalking-free 3D at less than 1000$? How can you not see the value in that?

The only thing I'm not sure about it's how it will work with my lovely Move. There is no real TV to put the Eye on (and that's fine, I'll just have the camera on a shelf), but I'm not sure where I should be pointing the Move when asked to point it at the corners of the screen. Never tried the Move in a theater :D
 
I'm heading out for lunch later with a friend who's back in town from University and there's a Sony Store in the area that has this on display (just checked Sony's website).

I'll post what I think of this later...

eh... this sucks... for my wallet.
 
If anyone can get the Sony staff to set up Move with this, i would love to hear how that feels.

Especually the block manipulation game might be fantastic.

My friend used it with glasses and seemed to have no problems.
All of them (five) liked using the device and two wanted to buy it. This might sell like hotcakes.
 
I went to Yodobashi in Kyoto yesterday and the guy told me the release of this product has been delayed to next year.

Can't find anything on the web about it being delayed though.

Will go to Umeda to check it out for myself too!
 
To those who tried it, how does the image clarity/resolution/pixel-density look? Did it feel like a 720p image stretched over a large screen? How does it compare to the clarity of 1080p on a 50+inch TV?

Alright, so I went down to the Sony Style store at the Eaten Center in Montreal today and got a chance to try these on.

My opinions are in line with most of the general comments I've seen around.

Aesthetics and looks: This piece of hardware definitely looks like it comes from the future. It has a very pleasing look and doesn't look weird or out of place. The headset is attached to a base unit by a wire and the base unit accepts all the inputs.

The headset itself, is a mixed bag. The front end with the display is perfect. It feels solidly built. The rest? Feels very cheap. The straps and the part of the set that fits over the ears will definitely break. I don't think it'll be like that in the final version, but I didn't like it.

Video and Audio: The video was absolutely superb. 3D tv's (or theaters) have a flickering that I can see, and they hurt my eyes or cause a little eye fatigue. The picture, I can describe it like this: Very smooth, easy on the eyes, vivid colours that pop, but aren't so bright that you have to squint, the picture is very sharp and very defined (I saw Star Trek in Imax when that came out, and it felt as crisp at that), and the 3D was incredible, for me personally, it really popped and was very impressive and felt like it added to the whole thing. So if I can sum it up in a word, it would be: Pleasant.

The audio was also good, but not great! It's passable I guess..... It immerses you, but if you've had experience with high end headphones, you will be wishing they were better. This isn't a glaring flaw (deal breaker). I'd like to mention! There IS a headphone jack those things were plugged into, someone will modify these things to work with Senheisers/Bose/etc.

Misc: I found the unit very very uncomfortable, especially on my nose. I had to play with it and adjust it for a good 5-6 minutes before it felt comfortable, and even then, I hated wearing it on my head. Maybe it's because conditions weren't ideal, and you should be lying down for this, but if I could somehow score the comfort of this device, I'd give it a 2 on 10. Honestly, I just wasn't happy with the way it felt on my face, and I daresay, I have a pretty average shaped head with no crazy abnormalities that would somehow make the headset uncomfortable.

Summation: The video is unbelievable, better than any 3D TV you'll ever watch. The image is so pleasing to the eye in parts due to how smooth, vibrant, clear, and crisp it is! The audio is ok, it will immerse you, and I wouldn't say by any stretch that it is "bad", because it's not. It just makes me wish they were better so that it matches the amazing picture. The headset was uncomfortable, but I didn't get to test it for as long as I desired.

I'll definitely be getting one, but not yet! I will wait for a future revision that has a better audio component, and I'll wait for them to take feedback and see how they design a more comfortable back end that doesn't feel as cheap in accordance to their customer feedback, and professional reviews.

There is a menu button under that allows you to access various settings. There is a setting to turn the 3D off.

Gonna have to agree with this, and I think this will be the one point people walk away disappointed with when they try it.

I don't know, I would be willing to suffer a fairly substantial amount of discomfort for a perceived 100-some-odd-inch OLED.
