Soul Calibur IV new screens (56k beware)

All of the girls have this creepy vacant stare...its freakin me out

I think it's because their facial expression don't change. They either need to add some animations to their face during the attacks or get rid of the slightly happy expression that hilde and sophitia seem to have.

Wow their expressions don't change? That's a very odd choice

Yeah, look at all the sophitia pics thus far. It's a bit freaky. I hope it's just because the game is a work in progress.

This is true, if you watch the trailers in slo-mo, you'll see that they never change. However I think it's because they just haven't added them yet as it's still in development. SC2 had them, so I see no reason why SC4 wouldn't have them.

Astaroth...ruined. But at least it's just one costume. Worth remembering if you're planning to boycott the series due to art direction. In the last two games, the difference between primary costumes and the second (and third) alternates was night and day.

I'm most excited to see what they'll do with character creation. And I hope the single player modes are more interesting than they were last time. The mission modes in the first two games were excellent, but I found the branching story mode pretty tedious in SCIII. Fortunately I loved Chronicles of the Sword, and I'm sorry it won't be revived in this game. Flesh out the presentation and kill the loading times...I'd have appreciated it as an extra.

I think every boobs comments in a Soul Calibur IV thread should be banned.

agreed It's like people are doing it on purpose now just to derail the thread. God I hope the next batch of new screens has 0 females in it. Then what will these people have to talk about.

By fans you mean fan being probably just you. You're passing on this game why? Because of the art direction? Ignoring the gameplay completely? Yeah, thats sounds like a true fan to me......
yep. unless hell freezes over and my expectations end up wrong, the best i expect of sc4's gameplay is sc/sc2-level mechanics (at most). in which case i see no reason to move from those older versions, given the annoying art direction in this one. and no, online multi is not a good-enough reason for me to jump on this game.

Pimpbaa said:
Sorry, old time fans would not pass on this game just because of larger breasts (especially considering the sexualized history of the games). Gameplay is what will make or break this game. Only ones with repressed sexulity, a total lack of, would kick this much of a fuss over this.

kick too much fuss over their favourite fighter turning into a teenagers' fapfest? surely that must be a sign of repressed sexuality.

heh, kids these days..

can someone please summarize the SC3 plot, never played it. and a short view into the new characters.

Obviously, spoilers, but I dunno who would care about spoilers in a fighting game.

First off, let's go through the new characters:

Zasalamel: A man who is cursed to an endless existence. He can die, all right, and he experiences the horrors of going to hell every time he does, but he just ends up getting reborn over and over again. Desperate to break the curse, he seeks out Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, believing that the legendary swords (he was apparently a guardian of it a long time ago) would have the power to break his curse. Wields a scythe in battle.

Tira: Crazy, psychotic mass murderer.

Setsuka: Believes Mitsurugi killed her master, and is thus seeking him for vengeance.

As you can see, only one of the characters is really significant to the plot.

Now, prior to SC3, Raphael fights Nightmare, and, long story short, gets his sorry rear end handed back to him. Nightmare is about to claim his soul and all that jazz, when Siegfried decides that now would be an opportune time to reclaim his free will and not, oh, a few years back when they were busy terrorizing Europe. Soul Edge is, naturally, none too pleased, and they begin struggling for control of the body (accompanied by some of the dumbest dialogue ever. Ever.)

Raphael makes use of this handy distraction and stabs Soul Edge in the eye before escaping, which causes Soul Edge to spazz out and reliqnuish control of Siegfried (who, in the intro, manages to find his shining knightly armour from who-knows-where at the exact same moment). Soul Calibur also decides that it would be nice to pop back from his vacation in Tartarus where it'd been left after finishing Inferno way back when. Siegfried reintroduces the two swords. Rather violently.

Siegfried promptly leaves, taking both swords leaving behind the azure armour of Nightmare - after all, heroic silver steel is much more befitting. Enter Zasalamel, who makes a deal with the spirit of Soul Edge and reforms the armour into a new Nightmare body, along with a new 'Phantom Soul Edge'. Yeah, don't ask. I don't know either. Zasalamel obviously wants Soul Edge to power up and all before he takes it for his own. Letting others do the work is the classic evil mastermind way, after all. Zasalamel then walks off and does a few other things like beating the tar out of Kilik. No one cares.

Raphael, meanwhile, makes it home and realizes that he's been infected by the evil energy of Soul Edge, and has inadvertently infected his foster daughter as well. Instead of seeking to purify himself, he shrugs, goes 'Oh well', and proceeds to infect the nearby populace. Sort of like a medieval Resident Evil 4, only dumber. He then hears of a 'Sacred Stone' that can purify this evil, and instead of deciding to seek this out and cure himself, he... decides to find and destory every last one of these stones instead. Oh, and apparently Cassandra met up with the infected villagers at one point.

Siegfried, meanwhile, realizes that Soul Edge is likewise starting to infect Soul Calibur, since Soul Calibur was originally formed out of Soul Edge by an ancient king whose son got taken over by the sword. *sigh* Thus he goes about seeking a cure.

Nightmare, meanwhile, goes back to doing what he does best - slaughtering dozens of innocent people. Along the way he meets up with Tira and hires her to both feed Soul Edge with souls and also to find a new, suitable host for his body. Tira complies, and then settles on Sophitia's children as suitable hosts - because little kids are the perfect tools with which to commit wanton slaughter.

That, in a nutshell, is pretty much everything significant that occurs. Other stuff happens too, like Astaroth discovering that he was based off Rock when he was created, and Cervantes realizing that he's falling apart at the seams (literally), and Yun-Seung and Talim meeting up and taking care of orphans, but, once, again - not important.

Emotion would come later I take it. Not like it really matters since other then the voice clip mode or winning taunts you never catch a good look of their face.
I see it coming but no need for it at the moment.

I don't mind big knockers, but I wish they could make some of the characters look like they haven't had implants. More natural looking boobs ftw.

OMHG just saw these for the first time and just woah. Well at least the game will sell now. Animeporn can't get any "classier" than this.

It looks stunning outside the boobs too, but those blank/braindead eyes creep the shit out of me. They better add eye/head-tracking or it will become the most crushing little thing ever to assault videogame graphics.

Makes DoA look like a serious brawler

And yeah this will be great stuff for that golden thread "the most embarrassing gaming moments" (my favourite thread of all time)

I like how Raphael is pretty much Dracula now. I mean come on, a bat clasp/chain? Wait, I think he has two of them! :lol

Aside, these screens are amazing. The character models look awesome.

hope this thread isnt too old for me to get banned.. but i got a chance to play soulcalibur iv. i didnt read other previews, so i dont know whats new and not. (everything is subject to change)

as we all know itll have online play, enhanced character creator and interactive stages. now here might be the new things: numerous DLC, 32 characters (judging by the character screen from the early version) and the thing where you can kind of insta kill the opponent is called Critical Strike. the guy presenting the game wasnt able to pull it off/ didnt know what CS was for, so i dont know how that looks like. while fighting i could make out some things that popped in (was japanese, couldnt read all), like combo, attack counter and overkill (katakana were o-ba-ki ru).

mitsurugi is as strong as always, taki was kinda like the same as from sc3 and cassandra is now more playable as she got more moves (i think that she was butchered in sc3).

there were 2 stages, one with marmoreal pillars and one with hippos in the background (its the stage which we saw from the screenshot of siegfried and the dodo)

overall its already good looking with nice lighting effects, detailed characters and beautiful backgrounds.

I guess the facial animations aren't finished yet because the female is smiling while she's fighting this insanely ugly creature.

Had this type of move been mentioned before, I honestly haven't read about an instant kill thing, I don't know if it is a good thing :(

well, there was an interview where it said that there is another way to finish off your opponent besides the standard k.o. and ring out. so i think it will be insta kill, but thats not 100% correct :D

This is very interesting news. Many people were suspecting an insta-kill move, and this kinda harkens back to SoulEdge/Blade where they had a massive damage "Critical Edge" move. DLC is a good thing, especially since this opens up the possibility for PATCHES and both Star Wars characters for people that like guest characters. I hope they drop a bunch of costumes and into DLC later down the road (I'm stilll hoping for a VF5 level character editor -- I don't use created characters, but I like to customize). Hopefully more news is on the way, because I'm especially curious to know how some customizations can lead to differences in gameplay (which was hinted to in the questionnaire sent out a while back).

Did eye tracking get put in? Or do they still have this vacant stare? This is currently my biggest question.

What the hell is the point of CS move returning considering a lot of combos and unblockables do tons of damage. Just what my mitsu needs more bs to rape people with. They better return side stepping to sc1 levels same for attack registration in consistency sc2 and sc3 are so full of shit on tracking at times.

I'm not saying whether it will be good or bad, but none of Mitsu's or anyone else's unblockables instantly kill.

Well, for one thing, Namco is looking to return to the more hardcore fighting style of Soul Calibur II. And the promises of bigger levels with more destructible elements are plenty intriguing. But it's the inclusion of a very unexpected bonus character that has raised the most eyebrows: Darth Vader. The 360 version gets Yoda, but in spite of the potential for his tiny, spastic gymnastics we have to say the PS3 got the benefit of this deal.

Darth Fucking Vader in ps3 version?!! \O/

I'm arguing what's the point and how do you setup conditions that are fair with a lineup of 32 characters. Knowing namco and the last sc games I just know whatever they do in this area is gonna be shit unless they do tons of play testing which from history they don't anymore.
