Soul Calibur V goes gold - New Vids, Screens

So we should forgive the devs for being lazy? Wut?
They've done much more than a reasonable person would expect given the limited time and resources they had for the project. Have you watched any SC5 streams lately? The game looks and plays way better than Soul Calibur 4. Don't forget that we're getting a greater number of characters than we were promised, and DLC is on the way.

Well I'm glad that Kilik and Sophitia(?) are back, but three mimics is ridiculous. And no Bangoo? Blarg.

I'm still really excited for this game, but I have to question if these decisions were born out of urgency or not.

Hopefully the DLC can solve some of these problems, though I have a feeling that Soul Calibur V will be the first one in the series to get an upgraded "super" release.

sc3 arcade
sc4 psp
sc2 on console was substantially different than arcade.

Dampierre's the preorder bonus, right? In Canadia too? Is it just Best Buy?

I think the issue is that Namco didn't give them adequate time and resources.

I hate Namco so much my balls hurt

I really can't see 3 mokujin style characters all taking up select screen spots. That's retarded.
Why is Edgemaster even in the game? This was his schtick, now his inclusion is pointless.

The characters are real, but there's no way I'm believing Kilik and Elysium use random styles. Fuck. Not even Namco would let that shit slide.

Such a small roster for 5+ games in the series. How do so many character not make it in, lol? Utterly ridiculous.

Tekken and Harada are namcos Ono and SF.
SC and Daishi (or whatever his name is) are namcos MvC and co.

one gets the money and time, the other gets the leftovers and the deadlines.

The sad thing is that I even let myself get hype for this shit. Especially after IV where there were 2 new characters (Hilde & Algol) and 3 Star Wars characters crammed in. When they announced V I couldn't care less. But after showing some of the new characters and watching some gameplay I let myself get sucked in. And it's an Evo game too. I thought "Cool, just throw all the old chars back in, including my main (Zasalamel) and we're good to go!"

And then you take out one of the unique characters for retailer exclusive pre-order bullshit? Nope, I'm good. This shit is getting gamefly'd for a couple weeks then I'm through.

Good for you. Vote with your wallet.

I'm talking about two console releases.

Semantics. I played all of them a lot and each was different from the first release.

So according to IdleMind from 8wayrun, who apparently already has played the final game and knows everything but can't actually say it:

TekkenLover Idle can you just tell us what Kilik and Elysium play like because they have been leaked? :P

IdleMind I can't tell you because the leaks conflict with my information.

The hope still burns.

He also confirmed Omega Pyrrah has a different style from normal Pyrrah.

If I hadn't signed up to play this game at FR, and I had more games I liked, I would be junking this because of this news. I just can't see this game ending up well.

Still buying and giving a chance, but Namco's rep is on the line here with me. If I end up not liking this, I'm not buying any more Namco fighters- I've got VF in a few months.

Im gonna do something wild and wait till I see the final roster confirmed then make a decision.

But at the same time Harada has to be the project lead for 5 projects simultaneously (TTT2 arcade, TTT2 console, TxSF, T:3DS, T:WiiU). That alone makes him unique ;)
Plus, the patience he has to take all the shit he gets on his twitter makes him a near saint

Yeah I just can't imagine there being 3 copy cat characters.

that's.. sorta reassuring.. i guess?

Here's what happened, from what we know:

Kilik and Xianghua were together, then Kilik disappeared/died/whatever the hell happened to him. Xianghua was pregnant with Xiba. Without Kilik, Xianghua gives birth and decides to go back home to daddy. Her grandfather tells her "we arranged a marriange for you, deal with it" and she basically just bends over and takes it. But she begs her father to raise her and Kilik's son, and he agrees on the condition that he never knows who his mother is.

Xianghua marries General Whoeverthefuck and has two more kids (Leixia and one more, can't remember her name). Xiba is raised by Xianghua's dad, with no knowledge of his parents, sisters or his grandfather (who is his master), yet through the magic of video game storytelling shenanigans (aka "fate/destiny") self-teaches himself Kilik's fighting style (which he did not know was his father's fighting style) and mixes it with what he learned from Xianghua's dad.

Xianghua's biological father? Because as far as I know she never met him. But this story seems to be a repeat of Xianghua's own story of unknown parentage.

For those that don't know:
Xianghua's parents are both from the Ling Sheng Su temple where Kilik also grew up. They got together and had a daughter - Xianglian - the girl who Kilik eventually killed when the evil seed dropped before SC1. Fraternization got the parents kicked out, but not before she got pregnant with Xianghua.

I guess the mother went and married somebody else or something. The father became a drunk and eventually ran into and trained Seung Mina.

Edit: Nevermind, read the website.
Xiba's master, Kong Xiquang, is indeed Xianghua's biological father. Never realized Xianghua ever met him.

Harada is mad pimp.

I still think this game is the best looking SC. 3 characters I don't care about don't change all of the footage I've seen and the impressions I've read. It sucks for fans of the missing characters, though.

Okay hold up! I'm totally behind on what's happened character-wise. What's the complete list so far? Kilik in or not?

Leak suggests that he's in, but he's only a mimic character.

I wonder why they would give him the staff in the character art if that were the case, though.

so, this seems to be a stinker...
What gives you that impression? Surely not the rumor that there are multiple mimic characters. Even if it's true, why should it matter? Reports from tourney-level players who have tried SC5 are consistently positive. What with its revamped gameplay and significantly improved character creation mode, SC5 looks to be a solid package even for casual players.

What about these other versions of Patroklos and Pyhrra I'm seeing? I can't find links to all the footage confirming this.

Yeah, he's closer in power to Keiji Inafune than Ono, right?

Alpha Patroklos is (basically) Setsuka style, Omega Pyrrah hasn't been shown on video yet. The video of Alpha Pat has been pulled off YouTube but I am sure more footage of him will pop up soon enough.

From a leaked footage (removed now). It shows that Alpha Patroklos uses Setsuka's style and wields the Soul Calibur.

Omega Pyhrra is likely to wield the Soul Edge and might have an entirely new set of moves (other suggests it'll resemble Sophy's)

I'm not gonna be playing tourneys or online, so unfortunately, I need some good single player modes. From what I've read, there's nothing like the weapon earning quest mode in SC2?

Well it is still a fighting game so single player content isn't ever really going to be the focus. That being said, the following single player modes are confirmed:

-Story mode following Patroklos, featuring full CG cutscenes
-Arcade Mode
-Quick Battle
-Legendary Souls Mode (Boss Rush)
-Create a Soul Mode
-Training Mode

Correct me if I'm wrong but Inafune was more of an executive producer at Capcom rather than internal team producers and project leads where creative input is required. Harada is still the man in charge of the creative process and all the content that makes it in the games while Inafune was someone that gave all of Capcom's projects deadlines and the relative budget needed for each. So in that case, Harada's position @ Namco would still be under Inafune's when he was @ Capcom.

Oh ok, I don't really know how Namco is set up.

Two images, culled from NeoGAF's depths, show the most hated man in the world fan-favorite Kilik (sporting a shiny new bird hat), as well as newcomer Elysium, an angelic female of some kind who sports very little of anything.

NeoGAF's "depths"? We have two fucking main forums, and the thread from where they took this news has been on the front page of the Gaming Forum often over the last two weeks.

Whatever, Joystiq.

Considering when the game was first announced to be 17 years in the future and people weren't even sure how many old characters would be back (if any other than Siegfried and Mitsirugi), I would say it is pretty good that we have ALL of the old main character styles returning in some way except Talim's, Yun's, Zasalamel's, and Rock's. (Plus it is pretty likely some or all could be DLC) We could have gotten all new styles and that is what most people expected when the game was first announced. The fact that instead we got almost the opposite and are only missing 4 of the mainstays (while still gaining a handful of new ones) is pretty good. If the 3 mimic thing is true that is pretty dumb but we still did get most of the old styles plus new ones so I don't exactly feel that bad about it, nor do I think they could have "brought back many" much moreso than they already have.

TL;DR:

We Lose These Styles (Probably...for now)
Rock
Talim
Yun-Seong
Zasalamel

We Gain These Styles (at least)
ZWEI
Viola
Patroklos
Aeon (Basically new)
Dampierre (Might as well be new since it is his first competitive game)
Devil Jin

We Keep
All other past styles outside of Guest Characters

Plus, we still technically don't know the movesets for Elysium, Kilik, or Omega Pyrrah...or if there are more CaS only styles...or if there are actually any characters behind the tablet on row 3.

Overall I'd say that is pretty good. However you want to count the new styles as actually new or not, we overall made a profit on number of styles and there are still uncertainties concerning some characters.

When it is put like that, I am quite happy with it, I just want the Katana/Shuriken moveset from SC3 to come back in some form, that was way too much fun.

Correction.

I'd rather have seen these clone characters just not exist period. Wasted slots.

Then, you have popular chars like Talim and Setsuka getting Kunimitsu-ed out of the game in favor of Devil Jin and Algol, chars no one really wanted. Even Yunsung and Zalsalamel more popular, and better designs. (that last part is subjective, but most folks would agree with me)

If they had just dumped styles and had a smaller roster, I'd be ok with that. Not all this Alexandra clone stuff- that was lazy when SNK did it in KOF99. I don't think it's due to rushing either.

I'm very unhappy with how this ended up. I'm seriously considering passing on this game now. This is the most unsatisfied I've been with a roster since KOFXI.

I can see myself getting DOA instead, that comes out in March right?

Sectus, how could you put Kilik/Seung Mina cause of Xiba under the lost part but not putting Xiba himself to the gained part, lol?

I mean either Kilik or Mina is lost, not both. I'm assuming Xiba is using an evolved moveset based on either of those. Same way Pyrrha is based on Sophitia.
