Splatoon 2 is absolutely STUFFED with bizarre design decisions

Do you like how quckly the matches start? Do you like that each weapon plays so differently? Do you like how the matches feel pretty fair most of the time?

This would have never been possible with such a small player base without this scheduled approach. If you want things to get more flexible tell all your friends to buy the game.
what small player base, the game sold more than a million its first week, this is a massive fanbase.

The game is still fantastic, as the OP said, so you should totally get it if you want to try it out. Just keep in mind all the issues mentioned, they might not matter to you, but they exist.

Again... Eating broccoli is good for your health, it's not an opinion, it's a fact. However I fail to see how Nintendo's decisions are "better for our health", hence why so many people are laughing at your comparison.

After these few exchanges, I take it that your reason that they are "better for our health" is that "Nintendo said so."? I will stop asking you to give your opinion on this matter if this is the case, I've already stated why I felt "there is a reason behind every decision" is a terrible reason to agree with something.

I may pick it up then soon. I'm a fairly new switch owner and am already kind of burnt out on Arms and Mario kart so I need something new and this looks fun!

It's good to be forced to do things sometimes for our ultimate good, or none of us would ever eat broccoli, and some of us wouldnt shower or play sports ;)

Having too many options can be a bad thing, not in theory but in practice :)

This is definitely Japanese culture clashing with European culture situation IMO
The hell is going on in this thread.

Good, don't let the fact that some of us having an issue with some of the designs of the game ruin your interest in the game... Unless the issues mentioned does affect you.

.... Why am I selling the game for Nintendo...?! I hope I get paid for this...

Nintendo defense force is amazing. I don't want any game company treating me like a toddler all the time.

Playing with friends is fine I've done it most of the day on this very game.

Now, having to play on the same team as your buds to even enjoy a game, that's an abnormal dependency.

Jesus tap dancing christ.

I love Nintendo to death, but it’s okay to admit that they’re not perfect. Splatoon is a blast and I enjoy it immensely, but it has many shortcomings.

That's just your opinion. Sometimes we really don't want to play with our friends and Nintendo takes care of that

I want to play this game.
Lol

Anyway I stand by my opinion that game is unplayable in handheld and portable.

But since I already own it I have decided to cave in and unpack the dock and will try it with a TV. Some of my complaints with the game would remain but maybe at least it will be playable and fun enough to enjoy.

Just hope it doesn't require a pro controller as well because I was already happy with the joycons and Mario Kart plays like a dream in handheld.

You didnt eat your broccoli did you? :)

I'm not defending them I'm trying to understand them, using Nintendo defence force on someone is like others saying Nintendo hate force, it's all BS

I can accept all of Nintendo's decisions with this game except one. Let me play a regular match with my GF, who bought a damn Switch with Splatoon so WE CAN PLAY TOGETHER!! The fuck Nintendo?!

Cut motion controls then play with a massive handicap while frustrated as you try to aim and screen size coupled with the camera zoom and angle.

Why cut motion controls? They work extremely well, even in handheld mode. I have zero issues in handheld mode at all.

Same request I had with the first one: let me skip the Off the Hook/map announcement when I start the game. Or at LEAST enable me to put the game aside and go do something else for a minute while it plays in the background. I shouldn't have to sit there repeatedly pressing A every single time I start the game.

I know, right! Splatoon isn't some niche indie game whose online player base starts small and quickly plummets. The game is a massive hit, selling millions already, and due to being a Nintendo game, will retain a sizeable player base for a very long time.

The game doesn't even put new players into an on-going matches to replace disconnected players (something which limited maps would help with). This is shown by the high number of 0pt "disconnected" players in each match. The uneven teams is yet another design issue for the game.

Map rotation has zero bearing on matchmaking speeds. You sit in a lobby until 8 players are matched, then the games loads up a selected map. Whatever map the backend selects for you to play has nothing to do with the initial search for 8 players.

I've heard mention that your selected weapon does come into consideration when the game is matchmaking. I have no idea if this is true or not. The game certain doesn't do any type of skill-based matchmaking, as the various levels of players shows. I have no idea if the game does connection-based matchmaking either. All I can see is that when I play in my region (Australia) I mostly play against Japanese players. Similar timezone, but hardly ideal ping.

My qualm on Splatoon 2 are the fixed Salmon Run timings. I have no problems playing it in handheld though. I seen many posters calling out those who are able to play in handheld .. an outright lie or "Nintendo Defence Force". Or if we like some things about Splatoon 2 or anything about Switch, we will be called out as fan boys.

Is expressing our opinions = labelled as a fanboy on GAF?

I hate that there are only two maps at a time. This is fine when you're learning the maps but when you want to experience the full game, it's frustrating. They should have a pro mode where it randomizes the levels so that you can experience a bunch of different ones in an hour.

I can't say I agree with all the decisions but the map rotation bit? That one is why I didn't drop the game like a corpse just landed on my lap.
Makes for much better sessions to manage to learn the maps without feeling that much at a disadvantage.

The mini game you could play in Splatoon is sorely missing in the sequel though.

This is... inaccurate. Most people like "some" things about Splatoon 2, and plenty of things about the Switch. The console and game have largely been received very positively on this forum (and outside of it) so don't try and claim the game or system is being vilified.

Yeah, while I am enjoying Splatoon 2, especially Salmon run when I'm allowed to play it, there are definitely Nintendo-like baffling decisions.

Can't skip the sisters talk every time you boot the game, you need to post drawings on a social media account to have them show in-game being the main issues for me.

The other weirdness like 2 map rotation doesn't particularly bother me and while only being able to play salmon run at certain times is disappointing, it does also remind me of Destiny with trials of osiris only being playable on Friday to Sunday which didn't seem to cause much of an outrage, though I will say I'm not a fan of this trend where games are dictating when we play.

The only other annoying thing, which isn't so much a baffling decision but just a disappointing missing feature. Being able to change loadouts mid-game. I believe loadouts are an amiibo only thing too?, but not even being able to change mid match make them seem more useless.

I don't believe you, at all. Not for one second.
I play the game motion controls in portable mode all the time. In fact I've probably spent most of my time with Splatoon 2 in Portable mode and I've been playing it all the time since it released. I don't believe you know how to play the game if you can't fathom how people play portable mode with motion controls. I play just as good if not better in portable mode over TV mode.

Is salmon run at fixed times? It's one reason I'm curious to try splatoon 2 but I don't get to play very often and usually in a very narrow time slot

I said handheld with motion on. Joycons on.

But I also said it isn't fun and is suffering when in portable due to screen size and with the camera angle/zoom.

I can believe you playing it in portable. Best I got was playing it with motion turned off in handheld and it was obvious that the handicap is too great playing others and it is frustrating and awkward.

I will attempt it for the first time later docked and maybe even do it with the pro controller and maybe that will at the very least remove some of my complaints about the game.

But if you try and tell me you play the game in handheld with motion controls turned on with zero issues then I will call that out because I don't believe it. I might also have a hard time buying it if you tell me it is the best multiplayer shooter of the generation, having played tons of them myself.

Not too narrow, usually 12h slot, but sometimes 24h. It happens quite often, it just sucks that we can't play anytime we want. The time differs everytime.

How narrow you find it personally will depend on your schedule, I guess.

When you keep saying handheld mode do you mean Tabletop mode? As handheld and portable mode are the same form.

Also I and many others in the Splatoon 2 thread have zero issue with portable mode, motion controls on. As I said earlier, you must not know how to use the motion controls as you should not be having issues in portable mode versus tv mode with the motion controls.

In addition I have no intention, nor have I ever , made the claim that Splatoon is the best multiplayer shooter title of the generation. Although I'd say the side comment more reflects on your true intentions in this thread than mine.

Not offering the option to play turf war with friends in the same team is basically my main gripe. A very infuriating one at that.

How would points work for Join-In-Progress players?

Would you get the 1,000 for winning if you join in last minute?

Would people get annoyed at joining games which are mostly done?

JIP would only apply to Turf-War, right? As on Ranked it would be a problem.

Join In Progress has its own issues.

Totally agree with the OP. Also let's add not in able to skip the stupid announcements to the list.
At lest have the option to keep pressing one button to skip all dialogs. It's annoying to have to press multiple times.

I love the fact the game decides everything regarding map rotations though: when I play Splatoon I join a flow. I don't have to think I can just play in seconds. It is an arcade way of thought, I love this part of the game design.

This is my problem with ARMS lol. The base gameplay is fun as fuck, but(with slight exceptions) most of everything that isn't a 1 on 1 fight is really unfun and bad. Makes me scared for future new ips :/

If you NEED to play with your friends to have fun, you are suffering from Abnormal Dependency Issues™*

Heh. :D I mean, we DO play every night, but it sucks to be matched against each other all the time. We have the theory that Nintendo matches friends in games explicitly against each other just so you don't wreck shit together, because they probably know that there are groups on Discord/TeamSpeak that coordinate all the time. I literally got matched with my other three buddies ONCE. In about sixty hours since release.

But Nintendo knows what's best for us.

"True intentions"

I own the game as in, I paid money for it lol

Handheld means holding the Switch with your HANDS, this isn't complicated yet you bring up tabletop mode which I also addressed.

Join in progress hasn't been an issue that I am aware of for more than a decade. It is a good thing we have countless of examples to look at.

If they are so worried about coordinated play, why can't they just unlock league modes restriction? Keep the team play there. I can think of no good reason to have League tied to B- in Ranked.

Let shitty teams (myself included) duke it out in the bottom rung of League, it'll all work itself out if the ranking system is reliable.

Nintendo could easily solve this by putting stacks vs stacks, but that's too difficult I suppose

When we discussed that in our group some came to the conclusion that the playerbase wouldn't be big enough for that right now. I mean, we have difficulty even finding normal turf matches on some evenings.

I'm actually in the camp who doesn't give a damn about some kind of fair "team balancing". CS:GO also throws solo-queue players and premade teams together. Splatoon can be a shitshow either way, so it wouldn't made THAT much of a difference, I guess. Also, you don't have much to lose in turf. You get points either way.

'True intentions' as in trying to start a fight. Also we've been back and forth about this numerous times. If you want to call my 50 hours of experience playing Splatoon 2 in portable mode with motion controls a lie or invalid, then go for it. There have been plenty of people in the Splatoon 2 thread that even prefer to play it in portable/handheld mode.

Anyway, to the OPs points, I agree with most of them. A few of the choices come down to personal preference. However, I'll also add that the lack of split screen local multiplayer and not allowing for a guest Inkling option for new players also are bizarre.

Funny because I think you are the one trying to start a fight all along.
