Splatoon: new info from Famitsu magazine (Hero Mode, multiplayer and more)

Not going to sell as well as Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart/Smash in its first installment but I'll bet on it doing over a million WW lifetime.

Nah. Doubt that. Original IP on WII-U. 400K LTD would be more realistic.
I hope Splatoon is successful for Nintendo of course.

Full scans are now here. Full translation .. anyone? ;b

On Voice-Chat: Matches are about 3-5 minutes long .. for WHAT do you need a voice chat? How to cover the ground with ink? Random People screaming in the awful GamePad mic? People, srsly .. you can see on the GamePad, where ink is still missing and mates are ..

I tried to point out that, but people have obviously grand strategies for those 3 minutes of ink splashing.

They don't want to use the Gamepad.

Considering the state of the gaming community these days, I'm not particularly bummed that I won't get called racial slurs by randoms if I choose to partake in the online.

I hope there's some bots because that would be BS of the highest order.

The voice chat hopefully you can with friends

game wont start without 8 should not be a big issue since its not like 5 different modes.

Tho it should have it start at least with 4 if time runs out and have a 2 v 2 but people can get added to the game.

even if the game only sold 200k, its an online focused game at worst 1,000 people come online, COD BO2 pulls that number. Thats more then enough to get 8 people in matches

why don't you, oh I don't know, tone down your shit slinging insults? in many instances posters are just explaining where Nintendo is coming from rather than outright defending them. as someone who has been referred to as a "Nintendrone" in the past 24 hours (due in large part to a lack of reading comprehension) it's just disrespectful and it derails threads (like we're doing right now). whenever you're in a thread and you have a notion that "hey, I think I'll make a post insulting an entire fanbase," perhaps you should rethink whether or not to go through with that notion. just some friendly advice.

Dude, i'm part of the Nintendo "fanbase". However, i'm seriously in awe with those individuals who think it's right that we get games from this company, with a clear lack of a feature "just because" (seriously, there's no real argument here that could defend this kind of decision, you know parental control exists, or as people have said, have it be OFF by default.)

And by no means i've "offended" an entire fanbase. Chill down.

But well whatever, if this is derailing the thread let's just end this debate.
I personally love what they've done with Splatoon in terms of the mechanics, the art style and creativity behind it...

I wonder how local multiplayer could work without bots, unless they'd let me bring a local player with me online (which I'm really hoping for).

Man you guys sure are downers.

Honestly, I don't care for voice chat at all, though I can see why some people do. But yeah, if you're playing with people from other countries, you're gonna have a hard time talking to them... It really makes sense. Plus, this doesn't mean no voice chat with friends. It only says no communication with players you're matched with.

Only thing I'm concerned about if the lack of modes other than turf war... I can see why they did it, what with the dismal sales this game is bound to have because it's colorful and from Nintendo, but I was looking forward to some other game modes.

Wait a minute

Doesn't that mean communication with players you're playing against is impossible?

That's what I thought. People just like to jump to conclusions.

avatar bias aside - you really are a fanboy to think what Nintendo is doing regarding limiting voice chat is at all progressive.

whatever, enjoy your closed off online experience.

1. I picked this avatar blindly.

2. When did I say that this was progressive? I said that people weren't reading what was being said and jumping to an extreme conclusion. Two very different things. I do wish there was an option for random voice chat. However I do realize that, the way it is worded, there is still possibly an option for friend chat. I DON'T start making drive by posts how Nintendo is the bloody devil and how they deserve to die. I also don't start assuming any points against mine are just made because there is a blind defense force.

But sure, I'm just a fanboy. I'm just an idiot and a Nintendrone and deserve death or worse for having the gall to like games from a company.

No one knows for sure yet. Technically you're matched with any player that you're playing with, but it can also mean that "matched with" is referring to random people.

Do you really think it's going to sell well? It's a Wii U game without Mario or Zelda: Nintendo would need to market it heavily.

It will probably sell ok, but remember that other shooters on the Wii U has had abysmal failures and still have thriving online communities (Call of Duty Wii U games for example). So the no bot thing before play isn't that big of a deal. Now the question comes whether or not there are bots in case of someone dropping out in the middle of the match. I hope they do because the do that in other Nintendo online games but we will have to wait and see.

This is what worries me most of all. Until they reveal other multiplayer gametypes, I'm cautiously optimistic at best.

Like I said they might have to if they're planning on adding local multiplayer, since 4 v 4 would probably be impossible locally. As far as online play with randoms though, it does look like it's the only option.

If they truly meant that you couldn't talk during matches they would have worded it differently.
then again it's 3rd hand info :/
I guess we'll know soon.

I heard CoDs Wii U still get 1000+ players, fear not.

Splatoon isn't going to sell anywhere near CoD on any platform. The game has bomba written all over it.

Game won't use CPU fighters; only once 8 human players have been found will a match start

It'll be an offline only experience. I imagine they'll patch this when it becomes an issue.

Oh hey, it's another drive-by opinion that cannot even be bothered to read beyond two words. Fun. And with words like that it comes to absolutely no surprise why online chat isn't going to be freely admitted.

Yeah, let's not get crazy, he's right. The fact that Nintendo is being less than forthcoming with this stuff implies that voice chat will probably work similar to how it works in MK8, chat with friends in between rounds, but nothing during the game, and for an online multiplayer shooter, that is backwards.

What? This is from a blog.... blogging about a magazine which goes into details.

We're currently talking about info on a blog. A blog known for being vague.

I don't have numbers but I'm pretty sure for a fact that John Harker said once over a year or so ago that no Wii U third party game (not even ZombiU) had passed 500k LTD, which is a number that almost every Nintendo first party release thus far has managed to pass. Splinter Cell Blacklist is a game that had an even worse performance, probably the worst for a big budget third party port, and did abysmally, and supposedly that game has a relatively active online as well.

It's not really that far-fetched to assume that Splatoon's player base is going to be well-dedicated due to Nintendo's online games generally being relatively populated for long periods of time. Before Wi-Fi shut down I could still find players who would play Brawl out of all games and even though yes, that game did sell millions upon millions, it's no secret to anyone how absolutely atrocious that game's online was. Splatoon shouldn't have much trouble doing around 300-400k worldwide and continue being active in spite of that. Many tourney organizers for the Smash community for one thing have been open about how popular the game is with the scene and how a bunch of people discussed organizing Splatoon tourneys.

I know people like to assume that online gaming is some sort of bubble but seriously, finding 8 players online is not the big deal people like to make it out to be.

So if I have my 3 nephews over, can we play together against 4 people online, or is it one player randomly matched with 3 people against 4 randomly matched people?

And if the information is true, then it will be a failing on nintendo's part, a failing that they have historically been fine with conceding to.

I'm not saying write the game off now, we should wait until future confirmation.

But if Splatoon doesn't have voice chat during gameplay, that will be a poor decision that will push this game out of the minds of a lot of people. As other people have said, it's 2015, voice chat should be a standard at this point.

Everytime Nintendo makes me use teamspeak to communicate with friends during play, it makes me want to use their stuff online a little less.

People are getting hung up on the voice chat thing when the real issue is that Nintendo still doesn't understand "matchmaking with friends." You can't play an online 4v4 game with friends unless you have 8 friends. There is no option to mix online strangers with friends. This is the biggest problem with all Nintendo online games.

No bots is worrisome. Hopefully it will support auto-balance if players disconnect mid-match. Also, team voice chat should be supported, at least if you're playing with friends. C'mon Nintendo!

Details about what can be done locally/with friends aren't known yet as far as I know. All this talk seems to be strictly about playing online with strangers.

With how much fun I've been having with my friends playing destiny and just being in party chats in general on the ps4 this is a disappointment. We'll all likely use the PS4 to chat while playing with this but can you imagine the advantage a team will have that can communicate?

Yes i've met most of my xboxlive friends because gears of war had voice chat. And i had a blast playing with randoms too. Yea every so often i would run into the asshole, but i would just mute him and continue playing.

Fair enough. I guess that sort of thing works better in North America, with such a huge pool of people speaking the same language. Europe is pretty fractured, and English a minority language.

Hopefully the singleplayer has lots of content to warrant a purchase later on, since not surprisingly, the online mode was always gonna be an awful mess under Nintendo.

Awful mess? MK8 and Smash online works like a dream. If by mess you're referring to lack of online features then yeah.

I think the moment we have more info directly from the magazine we need a new thread, this one it's too much splattered with the ink of console war.

Splatoon isn't going to sell anywhere near CoD on any platform. The game has bomba written all over it.
Are you really asking if a niche new IP is going to sell less than Call of Duty (even on WiiU)? This isn't a Smash Brothers or Mario Kart situation where retro nostalgia is steeped over every aspect of its appeal. You're going to be leaning more towards the Bayonetta 2 side of sales unless Nintendo plans to go full nuclear with marketing and promotion (they're not).

A little bit of info for the armchair specialists in how much this game is going to sell less than COD on Wii U, here is how well COD:Ghosts did on Wii U in US in the launch month:

COD

1 - 6.42%
4 - 7.39%
360 - 55.45%
3 - 30.42%
u - 0.33%

You can do the math.

Edit: sales figures for COD:BLOPS II from here:

The machine launched on November 18 and NPD, the U.S. sales tracking firm, counted that number of units sold in the week that followed launch. In that same period, sources tell me that NPD calculated that the Wii U version of Black Ops II sold 23,000 copies

With the quick games, one mode and the only online multiplayer shooter this year on wii u. It might not be an issue.

We got quite a bit of info but it seems quite a bit isn't very clear and just raises more questions...
Lets hope someone actually translates the scans to see if it's more clear than the current translation of the summary.

For a multiplayer focused title this really seems to be lacking a ton of major features.

This is not good at all.
