Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness announced (PS3/PS4, tri-Ace)

Well...the problem with Lymle is indeed the way she talks, however a lot of the detractors don't ever bring up her history for why the way she is.

Being traumatized by a demon that nearly possessed her as a child, as a result caused her to being unable to physically or mentally due demonic influence. By consequence this left her an emotionless husk and is pretty much frozen at the age of 5 rather than her true age of 14.

It's funny how without proper context, Lymle sounds much worse when you don't consider the above.

I digress. I still think of Alexander O. Smith should have helped with the localization in SO4, like he did in SO3. Lymle would have probably been handled better.

One thing I think is a large gaping plothole. They don't explain how Lymle breaks this "curse" or whatever. In fact most of this information can only be found in the database for her character profile. If it was explained in game via plot dialog, then perhaps it would have been handled better. Unfortunately this isn't the case.

Myuria from SO4 was 23 too, and good fucking god did she milk that "I'm SOOOO old and mature, you all are little boys, I am a total cougar" train for all it's worth.

I'll see if Fidel's older age is a good thing when I see more from him.

Oh yeah, I remember her doing that lol.

SO4's characters were so odd. Like I think a lot of SO characters look weird, but the SO4 cast looked, spoke, and behaved in a way that wasn't really funny or "cringey" to me, just strange.

Maybe there was some kind of subtle joke about aliens and cyborgs behind it all...

I'm joking, but maybe the Morphus race have exceptionally short life spans. So maybe she's an old hag at 23? Ha ha.

Hell Bacchus had to abandon his Morphus body because of stone sickness, the wuss. Should have took it like a champ. Become the rock the river cannot wash away!

To anyone who thinks they should platinum Star Ocean 4 before SO5 comes out:

No. Stop. Don't do that to yourself.

Im gonna do it! I'll get another copy that hopefully doesn't freeze up and i'm gonna do it!

None of us can give a damn, and quite frankly given the circumstances, none of us should have to. It's a hill no one should die on for.

I am not asking anyone should do anything, nor do I expect anyone to care.

However I don't know any other examples on how to handle a mentally traumatized character with near total social ineptitude, outside of maybe Casca from Berserk, or Nei from Evangelion

As I said, the way the localization was handled did not help either.

My problem isn't in why she behaves the way she does. My problem is how other characters react to it. Her emotional immaturity seems to be no detriment whatsoever to Faize's feelings for her, and Reimi seems to be the only one who treats her consistently as the child she is. You go from scenes where Reimi chases after Lymle, telling her that drawing on the ship "is a no-no" to scenes where Faize and Lymle accidentally kiss and it's supposed to be cute because they have a crush on each other.

Yes. I agree. The general lack of facial emotions (no blinking), etc doesn't help with this either.

Well at least if SO5 is borrowing more so from SO3, I don't think this should be an issue...well I hope at least.

Meracle, Lymle and Sarah the trio of terror. Please keep them away and give us decent characters at least.

This news has got my pretty hyped. Tempted to pick up SO2 on PSP as they have a copy at one of my local store. For reference, I've only played 1 and 4, but judging from this thread 2 is the best one. Should I do it, or wait for this Vita re-release that is supposedly coming yet has no information released.

None of the Star Ocean characters in their respective games have made returns as playable cast in subsequent games.

In fact Star Ocean 5 timeline wise takes place hundreds of years after Star Ocean 4.

The only comparisons though are Ioshua Jerand (SO1 character) who is a descendant of Serah, Ronixis Kenni from SO1 who is a cameo in SO2 (being Claude's Father), and the NPC Lias Warren from SO4 who is likely a ancestor of character Cyrus Warren from SO1

Vita version will probably be just a port from the PSP game, so unless you really want the better graphics, just go with the PSP one. PSP one on emulator will probably still look the best too.

I meant in the way of not making characters like those 3.

Well, it's up to you. Definitely do play the game if they end up porting it, since 2 is the best one in the series.

Lol I'm good either way. I have Second evo and first departure on psp. Used to have Second Story on PS1 as well but my brother loaned it to a friend and it never returned

Wait... You already have the game on the PSP? Then go play it!

I mean, the OLED screen is nice, but double dipping a game you never played just to get that version is a little much I'd say =X

Also, we don't even know if the Vita version is real, so until it comes out you will totally have time to beat it on the PSP.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? There's plenty of ways to portray a traumatized individual who also has a weird personality; Japan just seems stuck on emotionless girls for reasons that Anno rightly identified as very creepy - hence his satire character Rei, but sadly otakus just loved her even more.

With that being said, it's also possible to do an emotionless girl that isn't extremely annoying (Presea in Symphonia comes to mind) so I agree that the dialogue/translation was really the headshot here.

I didn't even know a Star Ocean 2 re-release was in the works for Vita.

And I call myself a tri-Ace fanboy...pff!

Although I wonder if the odds of localization are there. Nevermind if it actually finishes development or IS still in development for that matter.

Nah I played and beat the PS1 version minus the bonus dungeon that one kicked my ass. I only got about halfway through the PSP version.

I own the UMD's of both First Departure and Second Evolution myself.

Although to be perfectly honest, I honestly don't know if dumping my UMDs to my computer and copying them over to my PSTV and playing them via custom firmware to be play SO1 and 2 PSP on an HDTV, would be any different than waiting for the Vita re-release of Star Ocean 2 and playing that instead.

I probably will wait until the Vita version happens. I really don't want to screw up my PSTV by messing with that custom firmware stuff.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
If I'm reading this correctly, SO4 has multiple external writers:

Writing Credits (in alphabetical order)
Gi Jin Jang ... (scripter: external experts & specialists unit: Hybrid-forme Inc.)
Kazumasa Niitsuma ... (scripter: external experts & specialists unit: Extreme Co. Ltd.)
Yutaka Saito ... (scripter: external experts & specialists unit: Digital Hearts Co. Ltd.)

Maybe that's why the writing is a mess?

Oh okay, well then, it's really up to you I guess =P

2 on the PSP is pretty good though, so if you ever get tired of waiting for the Vita version, don't be afraid of going for that one.

Why the fuck isn't anyone bringing up her BEST appearances, both SO1 and SO2! Any Welch from then on was full 'o FAIL.

This is the synthesis girl? What the fuck, she looks perfectly fine here, why did they change her so radically in SO4

I get the feeling that SO4 characters were designed to be as irritating and annoying as possible lol

Yeah I was wondering why she looked completely different on 4. I really enjoyed her in 3 so I found it really jarring.

Games, anima and manga always had that one or two oddballs in the main cast but SO4 really cranked it all the way up and made almost everypne weird. If I were Reimi, whom I remember to be mostly normal, I would have abandoned ship and left the crazies to their own devices. It was just one weird character after another. It can be done well (I think Shadow Hearts is one example of acceptable oddball characters) but by the time I got to Sarah I was mostly considering skipping cutscenes.

I actually liked SO4 Welch more than 3 mainly due to her crazy antics whenever you saw her.
Her appearance was fine with me mainly since it also kinda went with her cooky personality.

I just can't picture SO3 Welch doing those things without it looking extremely out of place and out of character.

InfiniteNine

Rolling Girl
She looks vaguely like she had a blood transfusion with actual grape juice....like, she just looks ill and off putting.

Well I liked SO3 Welch's personality more and found it more funny. SO4 Welch seemed too try hard for me to find entertaining.

Something is seriously wrong with Reimi's eyes though. She always looked like she is staring straight at your soul.

On a different subject, I really dislike how girls these days put those fake lens on their eyes to make them to look big, like Reimi in SO4. Looked damn creepy and fake.

tri-Ace has always never really done the whole character model and faces thing very well, especially when they're going for that chiseled doll look .

Are there any examples in which the whole "let's try to make realistic 3D models with anime eyes-nose-mouth proportions" thing hasn't looked really creepy?

Tales of Vesperia?

Nah, I wouldn't call those models realistic. They're pretty anime. Wasn't Vesperia cel-shaded? I know that some Tales games were, some weren't, but they all look pretty similar in aesthetic to me, so I probably don't have very discerning eyes.

The CG reveal for SO4 characters looked pretty great, something I think Square Enix could probably pull off in-game with their 3D artist.

Tri-ace are just terrible at translating the 2D art into 3D models though.

What's this from? That's much better. Edge still looks weird, like a Japanese guy with dyed hair and coloured contacts (SE doesn't quite seem to know how to make white people who actually look like white people yet), but better.

And yeah, I really like those 2D models. I was a little sad when I saw the option to switch to 2D aesthetic on the PS3 version, but then realized that it only applied to menus.

only SE has nothing to do with how it looks, they just publish them games.
And I don't mind how SO4 looks, it looks well enough imo, the missing facial animation that is the problem and gives them "doll look".
