Do we have a benchmark to compare it ? what's the figure for live or psn ?
Neither of them give out real numbers for the most part. They only say how many accounts are created. Though we occasionally get a Gold number from MS, which is a bit better.

As already mentioned early, PSN had 75million accounts, Steam announced it had 30million active accounts. Valve didn't count accounts not used in the last month, while Sony counted everything. There are also other factors like people creating multiple accounts for each region on PSN, while that isn't as much of a factor on PC.

This really isn't something to downplay. In less than 2 years, it went from 1.6mil to 4mil for peak hour usage. It went from 3 million to 4million in less than a year(Was around Thanksgiving/Christmas to get pass it last year). Its still growing and only growing faster with their strongest card yet coming out(F2P DOTA). Probably took around 8-9 months for this million. I'm kind of expecting it to pass 5mil in 6-7 months. This Holiday season alone we have; Deus Ex, Space Marine, Dead Island, War in the North, Saints Row III, Modern Warfare III, Skyrim, RAGE, and more. All requiring Steam usage. More F2P games are bound to hit, the big Steam Sales always grow the user base by a few 100k, and DOTA 2 beta begins. With non of it being tied to 300$ systems and 100million+ advertisement campaigns.

I actually had to stop playing HL engine games for a while because people kept checking Steam IDs in Counterstrike/TF2 and constantly trying to offer me their account so they could get my 4-digit SteamID.

I think that's mostly died off now (hopefully)

Bunch of noobs. I had a 4 digit WonID

I leave Steam running 24/7, why would you turn it off?

Except in the specific situation that I want to play a non-Steam game and turn off all extraneous processes, I don't see a reason to.

STEAM is unique in that I utterly detested everything about it when it first came out. And slowly through awesome choice after awesome choice they won me over. And now I cant even imagine PC gaming without it. Good job VALVE!

4 Million concurrent users is actually A LOT! Riot games announced that with their 15 million active LoL accounts they get 500k concurrent users at any one time.
No, its not that many. LoL has 500k accounts that are playing, Steam has 4m accounts that have mostly just turn on client, its not the same.

Yeah, it's basically nothing. Origin on the other hand...

Bravo Valve. For me Steam is the best thing that happened to the gaming industry in the last few years, It's nice to see so much support.

Btw, I only run Steam when I want to play... It's easy to get distracted when I'm working D:

Where have i said its nothing? Jesus fucking christ and why have You brought up Origin?
I sometimes cant stand the fanboys.

And btw Origin still doesnt require to be on, when You're playing EA's games, so go figure [and please dont post crap about BF 3, its not even out].

Well, Steam is growing at a rapid rate. You can see that in the comparison chart ghst posted. Oct 2009 - Sept 2011: http://i.imgur.com/naxt6.jpg. It may very well be 6 million concurrent users or more in 2013.

38 hours of that is Deus Ex. I actually had a Steam account since the release of Half-Life 2 but I long since lost the info for it and since I ended up getting the Orange Box I just made a new one. I'm becoming more and more PC focused after several disappointments with consoles this gen.

Looking at the graph I would said that about 2M have Steam always turned on, the rest of the people open it to play when they want.

I havent brought up Origin and i'm not talking about BF.
And where did You get that i hate Valve? I like Valve, i just dont like their DRM, that's all and i havent even talked about that yet.

Joined up during initial release which was like Sept 2003. Didn't think it would go this far or that strong.

Since I saw a few Rating questions..

Rating is just how much you played over the past two weeks.
To get a 10(Peak), you have to play 30 hours. So every 3 hours is 1 to it.

Ah, thanks. Haven't seen that info elsewhere (though haven't exactly scoured for it).

4 million is a GREAT mark. Xbox LIVE! hit 2 million concurrent users in November 2009.

Many gamers use STEAM daily, stats are only for STEAM games but many gamers use STEAM for run non-STEAM games aswell.

Everytime I see the current stats on number of players, I'm reminded of the horrible tragedy that is the L4D series and its lack of proper support. Before TF2 went f2p it was consistently ahead in numbers, and yet all the L4D2 support since release has been shit. They best be cooking up something grand for the series.

I trust EA knows how to make money. I trust that they know how to be greedy, and continue being greedy.

I'm really wondering what "greedy" even means in the terms of making video games. I mean, since Origin isn't doing anything wrong or different.

Has it really been 8 years? I remember hating this POS when I first installed it. Now if the game is not on Steam I throw a tantrum.

If I recall correctly, it topped out at ~3 million a year ago. I wonder how high it will go after Dota 2 comes out.

PC Gaming is dead.

Long live N-Gage!

All 18 hours were spent playing AC2. Great game.

I'm ALWAYS on Steam, like whenever my computer is on, I'm logged into Steam. It's more than just a game marketplace, its also turning into a mini game-related social network/IM client of sorts. I expect this to get to 4.5 million by the time CS: GO comes out though.

Actually, sometimes I'm triple this time of play per week, sometimes I'm down to zero (when I'm busy, or playing console)

I am pretty sure that I had Steam as soon as it went public.

374 games later, and it has become the best gaming service ever created. I had a few years out in the wilderness where I was exploring consoles, but got sick of it and I now do all my gaming through Steam.

Pfft, your one of those people who lines up for movies and games. I take my own sweet time cause im cool. James Dean didnt line up for no games!

Don't respond to Chinner seriously, he's like the illegitimate child of AstroLad. Not as bad but cannot be taken seriously.

4 million concurrent users? I mean don't the 360 and PS3 networks beat this individually? Do we have any numbers on those? Hard to know how it compares.

In all reality I just used in 2004 for HL2 and TFC?, then didn't touch it again till Christmas 2010.
Feels good to be back

Between CS: GO and DOTA 2, Steam's numbers will be even more absurd by this time next year, easily. Good for Valve though, they deserve it for creating an awesome service.

The amazing thing is that 40 million is in the same league as consoles, yet the number won't just reset every generation.

This is a great point. I know Sony's PSN numbers include PSP and PS3. In the future they'll probably report PSN userbase numbers including PS4 and Vita. Also a ton of 360 users will still be on Live after the next Xbox comes out, so Microsoft will probably cite Xbox Live numbers across both systems.

It is a scary thought that Steam is a singular platform that will keep growing its userbase and evolving its feature set without resetting every console generation. It reminds me of how the Source engine is gradually updated over time.

Microsoft announced that Live had 2 million concurrent users as of November 2009. Haven't had any updates on that statistic since then.

EDIT: Steam also had 2 million concurrent users in 09. I'd be surprised if it's not in the same league, or above Live.
